Staying Warm in Old Saint Anthony, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Yesterday I decided to brave the -5F temp (-20C) and take some shots of Old Saint Anthony, the community where I live here in Minneapolis.

Despite the bitter cold and even though it's the dead of winter, people were still out and about, carrying on with their daily activities as usual. One can see that the cold does not stop Minnesotans.

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone.

To Ikops and Christos – yes, it was very cold that day, although -20C doesn't seem that bad. A couple of weeks ago, the temps got down to -30C one night. Ahh, the joys of living at the center of the continent...

Fantastic pictures! I love all of the brick in Minneapolis.

Wow, I can't comprehend -5F. The coldest temperature I've experienced is around 18F. Some of the people in these shots look somewhat underdressed for the temperature. Maybe some of these people have some warmers in their pockets and/or long underwear.

Honestly, anything below 32F feels the same to me. Cold is cold. It really makes no difference, unless the wind is blowing – THEN you feel it. Even the slightest breeze at 0F or below feels like millions of needles stabbing your skin.

Most of these people absolutely were underdressed, but they didn't have far to walk as most were just headed to the bus stop, their cars, or a block away to their homes. Most Minnesotans don't really bother bundling up in the winter unless they're going to be outside for longer than ten minutes.

I, on the other hand, went out fully bundled up and spent hours out in the sunshine, which felt wonderful.

Thanks, El Mariachi! Minneapolis really is a cool town. I always feel slightly reluctant posting my photos in Urban Showcase just because Minnesota looks so...lackluster...in comparison to some of the other amazing places highlighted here, but I like to think I capture the state in a positive light. It's fun to get out and explore! I don't know how many new places I've discovered just getting out and walking around.

I think you might be underestimating your own city.

Beautiful pictures, I love wintry shots from cold places. I especially like the artistic one of the two people in their "golden box".

there's is that odd, quiet aura when the city is thick in snow and I love the feeling.

Thanks! That's the "Yellow Room" in the Guthrie Theater, designed by Jean Nouvel. It's open to the public, and from inside, it appears that the entire city of Minneapolis is on fire.

Thanks, Seattlelife! I'm heading out to Seattle in March, so I may sneak in a Seattle photo thread at some point.
