![]() Some of Paterson, posted by me in another corner of SSC: Well, since the mods don't seem to mind these "pictures-of-other-cities" threads that pop up in the Oasis every now and then, I thought that could bring in a story of mine. I happened to be driving through downtown Paterson yesterday- Paterson is a either a small city or large town, depending on your point of view, in northern New Jersey. It, frankly, was quite distressing. I've never lived a sheltered life, but it really struck me to see such a pervasive dismal feeling. Cities have their rough edges-but it hardly is the entire city, and much less the downtown. Downtown Philly, LA, and even Detroit are relatively nice places. But it wasn't even that that really hit me. It wasn't the poverty of the place, but rather the sense of lost grandeur. I passed by a plaza and had the fleeting impression of San Fransisco's Union Square. I looked at the towering projects and the my feeling is best put as: - the mistakes that were made, the courses not taken.Paterson, simply put, seems to be sitting on that fine line between the developed world and the developing. The pictures aren't mine- it's hard to take pictures when you are driving. ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Did no one ever take the time to notice how ugly these buildings were? image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Everything is either old and tired or new and terribly built. image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() As if lack of maintainance was not enough, the buildings have been marred by incompetent modernizations. image hosted on flickr ![]() I perpetually pass this whenever I take the train into the city... image hosted on flickr ![]() Even these botched new facades must have shone at one point, and now they crumble... image hosted on flickr ![]() The owner of the yellow building must hate it with a passion... image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() One failed social housing project sits in ruin while another, surely to be made of materials that would make a mockery of the architecture it is meant to imitate. image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() "The Inner City Today Is an Absolute Contradiction to the Main Stream America of Gas Stations, Expressways, Shopping Centers and Tract Homes. It Is Populated by Blacks, Latins and the White Poor. Most of All, the Inner City Is Human Beings, as Threatened and Beautiful as the 19th Century Buildings in Their Environment"- 1974 image hosted on flickr ![]() At times the city looks passable... image hosted on flickr ![]() Old Post Office image hosted on flickr ![]() Paterson City Hall image hosted on flickr ![]() Passaic County Courthouse ...at others it has the charm of old Europe... image hosted on flickr ![]() ...and somtimes general American beauty... image hosted on flickr ![]() ...but then you are always reminded this is a city in decay. |

New Jersey enchants to me! That part of the great large city is seen very clean and tedious, that if, that it belongs to another state, but it is part of the large city of New York. It enchants to me as they take care of everything and the zone with those impressive skyscrapers is modernized simultaneously. Congratulations!
