Hello all;

Many thanks for the excellent information you all have posted about airlines in Somalia.

Which airlines are still operating in Hargeisa? What are the routes? In the past, I know it was possible to fly from Hargeisa to Djbouti, Mogadishu, Sana'a, etc. but I am curious about the current state of affairs?

Many thanks!

Somaliland Receives USD 10Million for airports upgrade

HARGEISA — Somaliland Minister of Aviation formally launched a USD 10 million programme to modernise and upgrade two existing airports in the country on Tuesday.

Speaking at a ceremony held at Egal International airport, Mr Mohamoud Hashi Abdi told local media that Hargeisa’s main Egal International airport and the main port of Berbera will be rehabilitated in the coming months. He said the Kuwaiti government will be providing all the $10million funds needed to improve the airports’ capacities, terminals, runways and the security to comply with International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) standards.

He added the Kuwaiti government will supervise and oversee the projects as well as providing technical assistance and capacity building through their non-profit organization, the Kuwait Foundation.

Kuwait Foundation is a private, non-profit organization and is chaired by H. H. the Amir of the State of Kuwait. A delegation from the foundation is due to arrive in the country in the next forthnight to assess the airports.

The Minister has been abroad for the last two weeks visiting the Middle East and the UK. He has been pushing for developments for all airports in the country. As soon as he took oath, after his party came to power in July, the minister quickly reversed years of neglect for Burao airport and reopened the facility in early this year.

It is not clear if the new administration will use designs and blue prints for Egal International Airport from the previous regime, who produced a number of designs before their depature from office.

Somaliland airports have became under pressure from recent increase in traffic due to many Somaliland Diasporas returning home and the region becoming a gateway to connect Asia, Africa and Europe.

As well as these airports, Kuwait also helps Somaliland in the fields of health and humanitarian reliefs.

It's a start. $10 million could go pretty far in rehabilitation, which Hargeisa airport sorely needs.

Anyhow, nice article xusien. It makes us all mad when the so-called international community is pumping millions of dollars on fake TFG when they should be investing that money in stable areas like Hargeysa, Burco, Bosaso and so on.

I am not sure about that. It's even unknown if the renderings and blueprints from that plan are still being used as the article mentions.

Indeed, sxb. However I prefer this kind of investment instead of the corrupt aid that the people in Muqdisho never see.

I think most of you have been sleeping since Daallo Airlines has not been around for almost 3 year's Now. I use to call it Inshallah Airlines since just stepping on their plane's was such a risk and you wouldnt know if it will land, Plunge into the sea or dont even take off. The Skie's of Somalia is now Dominated by Jubba.

It was Sold to DP World but DW World itself became bankrupt and Daallo was never invested in, rather an airline called fly Dubai which is owned by Emirates Airlines and in return owned by the Dubai Goverment flies to Djibouti now and it competition with Juba.

Somaliland unveils new airport surveillance system

New video surveillance systems have been introduced at Berbera Airport in Somaliland as part of a wider effort to secure the state's transport hubs.

According to the Somalilandpress, aviation minister Mohamoud Abdi unveiled the new technology last week, insisting it would help to reassure travellers who are concerned about the threat from terrorism.

He claimed there were too many security gaps under the previous system and insisted that more rigorous screening of passengers boarding plans to the Middle East or Western nations was required.

The airport surveillance upgrade followed an overhaul of security measures at the port of Berbera earlier in the year. Upgrades at other airports in Somaliland are being planned in the months ahead.

Somaliland is a self-declared sovereign state in Somali, which declared independence after the military dictator Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991.

Though not internationally recognised, it has a working political system, its own police force and its own currency.

Definitely necessary in these unpredictable times. When I went from Hargeisa airport a few years ago (maybe it changed since then?), my mother and us got into the country like nothing. No baggage checks, passport checks, no security checks, nothing...

Somali Airlines to be re-established soon:

“” dhawaan ayaan Hirgalinaynaa mashruuc Garoonka lagu dhisayo sidii uu habeenkii u shaqayn lahaa, maadaama Garoomada ku yaala Soomaaliya sida Hargaysa oo kale ay shaqeeyaan Xiliyada Habeenkii ah” ayuu yiri.

Dhowaan ayay aheyd markii Wasiirka Gaadiidka Cirka iyo dhulka uu sheegay in dib u howl gelin doonaan Shirkadihii Diyaarada ee Somali Air-line, ayna dadaal ugu jiraan inay soo celiyaan wixii hanti ah oo ay laheyn.

Sidoo kale lama oga waxa arintan ka hirgali karo maadaama Muqdisho ay tahay Magaalo Dagaalo la dageen oo habeenkii aan la socon Karin, halka laga Hoydo 5-galabnnimo.
