High Grounds PS moves to Miller's Road quarters
M K Madhusoodan & Rajiv Kalkod , TNN | Jun 9, 2011, 12.21am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: The High Grounds police station will soon be shifted from a makeshift shed to a half-century old police quarters at the Miller's Road-Cunningham Road junction.

The High Grounds police station takes care of security for VIPs -- the chief minister, his cabinet colleagues and other political bigwigs. However, the police station itself has little security -- it is a ramshackle tin shed without doors or windows, at the corner of Race Course Road and Crescent Road.

Only a couple of days ago, home minister R Ashoka had announced that the police station would be shifted within 10 days. "The police quarters allotted to an officer earlier serving in the city will be vacated soon. The officer is posted in Mysore and his family still occupies it. As soon they move out, the police station will be shifted there," the minister had stated.

The house, set on more than half an acre, is a stone's throw away from the office of the city police commissioner on Infantry Road.

The police station was shifted to the shed opposite the Race Course, after the old one -- at the corner of the Bangalore Golf Course at the junction of Palace Road-T Chowdaiah Road -- was demolished in October 2005 for road widening.

When TOI visited the police quarters, family members of the present occupant, Basavaraj Y Malagatti, were preparing to shift home. "We will be moving into a new building in Vasanthanagar," Manu Malagatti, the officer's son, said.

The family members say they have been staying in the house for the past eight years. A name plate on the door still reads -- `Basavaraj Y Malagatti, DCP-Traffic East'.

Affordable accommodation near Bangalore International Airport

Quote:
In an effort to provide affordable accommodation to those landing in Bangalore International Airport (BIA), the Bangalore Mahanagara Transport Corporation (BMTC) has decided to build a high-tech bus shelter-cum-accommodation complex near Devanahalli. BMTC has already purchased 2.23 acres from Bengaluru International Airport Limited for Rs2.25 crore.

R Ashok, minister for home and transport, said, "With the intention of providing accommodation and transport facility for those landing at the BIA, we have decided to develop a complex, which will comprise a bus stand, accommodation facility, rest rooms and a good canteen. The complex will come up near the airport. We are yet to finalise how many floors the complex will have," he added.

For the first time, BMTC has appointed 20 men under the sports quota. "From now on, we will appoint sports champions who have achieved national and international recognition. We have also hiked the stipend for BMTC trainees to Rs4,000 from the earlier Rs2,500," he said. Ban on old autos

State transport department has decided to ban old autos in the city. Henceforth, the department will issue permits only to those autos with digital meters and those that are environment-friendly.

The department has decided to issue permits for 40,000 new autos. However, this issue is still pending in court. "After the court verdict, we will take a final decision in this regard," said minister Ashok. 3,000 KSRTC buses

Ashok announced that Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will purchase 3,000 new buses, including 30 sleeper coach buses and multi-axle and Benz buses, this year.

"More than 300 villages today lack government transport facility, so we have decided to reach all the villages in the state. We have asked the rural development and panchayat raj to provide good roads for better connectivity. We have also requested regional transport offices to issue permits to run government buses to all villages," he said.

Ashok also announced that all towns in the state would get city bus service soon.

"Now we are providing city transport services only in few cities, but the state government has decided to introduce city bus services to all major towns and cities," he said.

Ashok also pointed out that Karnataka ranks No. 1 in the country for providing better transport facilities.

He said, "In our state, there is one government bus for every 3,500 people; in other states, for every 30,000 people, there is only one government bus."

There are about 23,000 government buses plying in the state.

In the current fiscal, KSRTC and BMTC have earned a revenue of Rs65 crore and Rs50 crore, respectively, he added.

Google Street View Stops Driving In India; Bangalore Police
By Nikhil Pahwa on June 20th, 2011 | Post Comment and 47 Reactions

Quote:
Exclusive: Google has paused it’s Street View project in India, the company has confirmed to MediaNama, stating that they received a letter from the Commissioner of Police regarding street view, and decided to stop Street View cars from plying in Bangalore for the time being. The company hasn’t commented on the content of the letter it received.

In response to a query from MediaNama, a Google Spokesperson wrote back, stating that: “We can confirm that we received a letter from the Commissioner of Police regarding Street View. We are currently reviewing it and have stopped our cars until we have a chance to answer any questions or concerns the Police have.”

We had asked Google some questions on permissions and data collections at the time of the Street View launch. Read their responses here. The company had said then that it had taken a formal approval from the traffic department of the Bangalore Police for Google Street View.

Is Street View Publishing Media?

We had contacted Google following an anonymous tip-off we received, which stated: “google street view has been stopped by bangalore police as policy on foreign companies to collect such data is not present . At present there are several restrictions on foreigners to collect photgraphs and there is also a foreign direct investment policy ( FDI policy ) on investments and participation by foreign comanpanies in Indian media . This form of new media collection needs policy clearance for foreign companies . Also the controversial and often adversorial approach by google and google earth is not finding favour in Indian adminstration .”

We’re not sure if these the comments on Foreign Direct Investment limits in India are applicable to Google, even if it does raise the question – is Google Street View, by publishing photographs online, actually a publishing entity? We don’t think that the Foreign Direct Investment limits of 26% on Indian News media will most likely not be applicable to Google Street View.

Secondly, we don’t think there is the need for any policy on a publishing entity to collect data, unless it is for sensitive areas: International media organizations don’t need permits to click photographs in India, do they?

Transit hub in Yelahanka to make travel a breeze
Senthalir S, TNN | Jun 29, 2011, 12.20am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: Once you alight from a bus or train in Yelahanka, you'll not have to walk long distances to catch an autorickshaw to reach home or your workplace. With an intermodal transit hub (ITH) coming up, commuting from Yelahanka will become all that easier. In a passenger terminal in this project, people enter the facility through one mode (by car, bus or rail) and leave through another.

ITH is for terminals that serve multiple transit operators such as combined bus and rail systems like Metro and HSRL services, along with intermediate public transport network. It will have bus terminals and repair shops, Metro station, multi-level parking and property development.

KSIIDC-IL & FS Project Development Company (KIPDC) has submitted pre-feasibility report for ITH on a public-private partnership basis in Yelahanka to the infrastructure development department (IDD).

A senior official with IDD's public-private partnership cell said: "The developer who'll construct High-Speed Rail Link (HSRL) will also have to build the intermodal transit hub. Otherwise, he will have to get another developer who will be able to do it," the official said.

Intermodal transit hubs help provide last-mile connectivity. People needn't walk after getting down from a bus or train. The present system doesn't provide required infrastructure to help reach a commuter's final destination
__ Traffic expert M N Sreehari

ON THE MOVE

* Integrated bus terminals will serve as common facility to KSRTC and other state transport, private and BMTC buses.
* There will be a repair shop at the ground floor, including small workshop shed, washing platform, crew room, office area for BMTC/KSRTC and other state transport
* There'll be a Metro station and intermediate public transport, including autorickshaws and taxis.
* The system will include ticket reservation counters, tourism counters, food outlets, shopping centre, retail hypermart, three-star hotel, ATMs, bank counters, foreign exchange counters, visitor parking facilities, etc.

What will the price of the tickets be to use that HSRL? I hope it happens but suspect it will not take off.

Praveen Sood is doing a very commendable job. He is quite interactive on the FB page.

Many problems faced by BTP themselves which many are not aware are also highlighted.

Take this one as an example.

Metro work on MG Road leaves behind a mess

BANGALORE: The ‘Namma Metro’ work in the city has been accepted with a pinch of salt. Probably the worst affected among all areas (where the Metro work has been undertaken) is MG Road which leads every commuter to a ‘several years back’ nostalgia moment. Be it the long traffic queues or the mud and the sand all over the road. But the general conjecture among all people is that the running of the metro would drive away all the hassles associated with the road presently.

The work here does bring along with it rubble, sand, stones and rocks. But the commuters question the authorities on why a more systematic way of dealing with the situation hasn’t been adopted. With debris lying all around and pebbles strewn across the road, the risk of accidents has increased substantially.

Under the Trinity Circle station, the wreckage puts travellers in a spot. A motorist on the road, Sheetal, voiced her grievances. She said, “I am a routine user of the road. The metro work brings along with it a wait of several minutes just to get through this particular of the road. But problems such as stones on the street and debris lying all around cause problems on a different scale. People like me, who drive two wheelers, automatically become more susceptible to accidents.” She further expressed her disappointment at materials disposed along the pavements and the newly constructed divider on MG Road.

The dividers which have been built with a futuristic view of planting saplings and flowering plants are now covered with concrete debris.

The BMRCL (Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited) chief engineer for the area Hegga Reddy, informed City Express that the disposal of the blocks was not the work of the metro officials but of miscreants upon whom a complaint has been registered at the Ashok Nagar Police Station. He asserted, “Construction materials from a nearby site were dumped here at night by some people. It was unauthorised. The metro work on MG Road is complete.”

When questioned further about the inconvenience caused due to the stones on roads, he remarked, “Although tarring work, which is under completion, near the Trinity Circle station might be the cause for this, the problem will be handled better by the traffic cops who are present there.”

IBM Global Commuter Pain Survey: Traffic Congestion Down, Pain Way Up

ARMONK, N.Y., - 08 Sep 2011: • 8,042 commuters in 20 cities on six continents surveyed
• Drivers report more stress and frustration related to commuting worldwide
• Forty one percent of commuters globally said improved public transportation would help reduce stress
• Perception of traffic in emerging economies vs. more developed economies is improving
A new IBM (NYSE: IBM) survey of the daily commute in a cross-section of some of the most economically important international cities reveals a startling dichotomy: while the commute has become a lot more bearable over the past year, drivers’ complaints are going through the roof.

The annual global Commuter Pain Survey, which IBM released today, reveals that in a number of cities more people are taking public transportation rather than driving, when compared with last year’s survey. In many cities, there were big jumps in the percentage of respondents who said that roadway traffic has improved either “somewhat” or “substantially” in the past three years.

Bangalore scores 75 (on a scale Mexico City 108 (most pain)- Montreal 21 (least pain))
