Wear your helmet, cops remind
TNN | Feb 22, 2012, 02.49AM IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: Traffic police have asked two-wheeler riders to wear helmets without fail. This advisory comes after 9 motorists, riding without helmets, were killed on the spot following head injuries in January alone.

Additional commissioner of police (traffic) MA Saleem said head injuries could be fatal or result in lifelong deformities. He pointed out that two-wheelers make up for nearly 70% of the over 40-lakh vehicular population in the city.

In a release, he said wearing helmets is mandatory for two-wheeler riders. Sadly, most of the time, they are found riding without the protective headgear.
Bangalore weather is friendly for two wheeler riding, and to play golf

Signal synchronisation on MG Road soon

The lights turning green as soon as you pull up to the traffic stop is not to be attributed to luck or divine providence but to the efforts of the Bangalore Traffic Police and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
BEL has been conducting pilot studies since a few months in order to make the M G Road stretch a smooth ride for thousands of vehicle users who travel by the road everyday. ‘Signal Synchronisation’ for M G Road is all set for a public demonstration by the end of this month according to BEL officials.
“Yes, the project is under experimental trials. The traffic police have not yet been given the project by BEL, but we expect it to be transferred soon,” said Vasant Bhagwath of the Traffic Management Centre.
He added that the project aims to sense the number of vehicles at each junction with the use of virtual loops and cameras in order to ensure that signals are programmed accurately to provide a non-stop drive.
“Data loops on roads are obselete, we are using virtual loops and pilot testing is on. We are employing advanced cameras to measure the density of vehicular movement and volumes,” said a BEL official. He also said that the final synchronization calculations will be made with the help of the cameras.
However, problems like the manual operation of traffic signals and slow moving traffic at the beginning of a signal threaten to negate the effect of such projects. “If changed once, all the signals will have to be synchronised again. This will lead to a waste of time,” said Bhagwath. Officials will have to look into a solution for this problem in order to ensure full efficiency.

Traffic cops will shoot you in act
The writer has posted comments on this articleTNN | Mar 11, 2012, 02.24AM IST

BANGALORE: The next time you are caught committing a traffic violation, don't even think of fibbing your way through. For the traffic policeman may have photographic evidence of you committing the violation.

City traffic police will be armed with 400 digital cameras to catch traffic violators in the act, police commissioner B G Jyothi Prakash Mirji told STOI. The department received 100 digital cameras from a city-based NGO on Friday.

"The photographic evidence in the hands of traffic policemen will bring public-police altercation on traffic violations to an end," Mirji hoped. Cops will carry digital cameras during their drive against traffic offenders. The photos and small video clips will be stored in CDs. "We'll store the photos till offenders pay the fine or if they argue, we will produce the same before court," said a senior police officer. "Cameras will rescue policemen from being victims," he added.

CASE STUDY
Dr Narayanaswamy (name changed), 55, was stumped on receiving a traffic challan for riding without a helmet. The doctor had never ridden a two-wheeler and had been using cars since his college days. He rushed to a senior traffic police officer. A close examination showed that the traffic constable had noted down KA 04 instead of KA 05, and the trail led police to the doctor. The matter was resolved without the doctor coughing up a paisa.
This is the way forward

Traffic policing set to go contactless soon

BANGALORE: Vehicle owners having heated arguments with traffic policemen, often leading to unseemly controversies, is soon set to be a thing of the past. With its dependence on 'contactless' enforcement increasing, Bangalore city traffic police are confident that they will completely eliminate the practice of booking cases against offenders on the roadside in another couple of years.

Additional commissioner of police (traffic) MA Saleem admitted that their priority is now on traffic regulation rather than bringing traffic offenders to book.

"We have been installing surveillance cameras across the city. We have 165 cameras at major traffic intersections and the number is expected to double within a year. We can book cases now relying on photographic evidence through images captured from these cameras instead of catching offenders on the road," he said.

This contact-less policing means there will be less policemen-motorist contact, he added.

"After another two years, booking traffic offenders will go automated and replace usage of Blackberrys and collecting spot fines," he said.

But Saleem said: "This will not be applicable for drunk driving cases which require breath analyzer tests and in some cases even medical check-up."

Saleem said: "There is an urgent need for regulation of traffic as the vehicular population is growing phenomenally. The roads are getting congested, often creating traffic bottlenecks in many places. I feel that a large number of field police personnel should get into regulating traffic to ease the congestion rather than booking cases," he said.

Bengaluru: Come February, the first of its kind Traffic Management Centre in the country will be operational in Namma Bengaluru. The centre will become operational on February 10 and traffic police have sought possession of the building from the Police Housing Corporation a week prior to the inaugural day.

Last week, senior traffic police officials held a meeting with stakeholders in traffic management and enforcement where the shifting of different cables for signals and cameras were discussed. The stakeholders have sought for 3-4 days to complete the shifting and work on this is expected to begin in the first week of February.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M.A. Saleem said most of the traffic offices which are cluttered in city will now come under one roof. “Besides housing the Traffic Management Centre, the new building will have conference rooms to conduct citizen meetings. The automation centre, which is presently operating from Public Utility Building, will also be shifted to Infantry Road office,” Saleem said. He added that the new office will help in streamlining different aspects of traffic management and police will in a position to attend to congestion problems much quicker with the video wall facility.

Saleem said that a team of 50 trained policemen will operate the TMC on Infantry Road where video walls are being mounted to monitor traffic across the city. “The large screens will help the police have a better idea of traffic on the roads and depending on this, changes can be made in signal timings or the constable on the ground can be briefed about the volume of traffic in the surrounding junctions,” he added.

The new TMC building on Infantry Road will also house the Traffic Control Room and Automation Centre where traffic fines can be paid. Besides the offices of senior traffic police officers, the building will also host the Traffic Wardens’ office.

Thanks much.
Gonna get a snap of it, upload to Wikimedia Commons, and expand the BLR Police article. Might get it on to the main page.
