A recent article

Identifying its new facilities for film shoot, film directors return to the capital city of Kerala, Trivandrum. Now, the state capital has become far advanced as a film location. Chitranjali studio is modernized, Prasad colour lab and Vismaya studio have come to life, KINFRA Film and Video Park has become the film industry’s much loved location. A lot of outdoor units have started functioning and a number of good hotels and shopping complexes have groomed the capital city, Trivandrum. These have made the film industry fall in love Trivandrum all over again.
Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala which was the then preferred location of the film industry, due to declining growth and lack of facilities had lost its importance years back. Now the capital city of Trivandrum is regaining its glory as a film location. More than half a dozen films have been shot recently in the capital. ‘The Thriller’, ‘Sakudubam Shyamala’, ‘Sarkar Colony’, ‘College Days’, ‘Kanyakumari Express’ are some films completed here. The Shaji Kailas-Mamootty film ‘August 15’ is being filmed in the capital city.

Years back, Trivandrum was the undeclared capital of Malayalam film industry. Centering on the facilities at Chitranjali, the Malayalam film industry flourished. With the passage of time, the capital could not keep up its modernity. There started a decline in the demand this film location.
Meantime, Kochi attracted the attention of the film industry with its ease of reach. Major and minor film actors started to settle in Kochi. Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Kunchako Boban, Dileep, Kavya Madhavan were some of them. As a shooting location, Kochi increased it production facilities. More studio complexes were started to be built. The capital city became a venue for serial production for the television.

Currently, the capital is the best location for the film industry. “We can reach any where by 10 minutes. There’re no traffic blocks”, says G. Suresh Kumar, the General Secretary of the Association of Producers. The capital is a location of beaches, waterways and villages and backwaters. Being the centre of the State politics it has the presence of the Secretariat and this provides originality to the ‘sets’ of popular political films.

Kerala State Film Development Corporation

The Kerala State Film Development Corporation Ltd. was established in the year 1975. The concept behind the initiation of such a Public Sector undertaking was to give a massive thrust to the development of Malayalam Film Industry and to root and nurture it in Kerala which was then depending and existing in the studios around Kodambakkam, a suburb of Chennai.

Another prime objective of Kerala State Film Development Corporation is to facilitate the growth of good cinema. Chitranjali Studio Complex, inaugurated in 1980 was the first step towards the realisation of these objectives. Chitranjali was truly a pioneer in introducing the latest film technology in South.

KSFDC is the sole production agency for documentary film and video programmes for Government of Kerala. The Documentary and Short Films produced by KSFDC have won many State, National and International Film Awards.

The Chitranjali Studio Complex

Chitranjali is located on a beautiful hilltop at Thiruvallam just eight kms away from Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala. Seventy five acres of sprawling grounds, of all topographical descriptions, like meadows, fields, coconut groves, barren stretches, cliffs and vantage points from where the sea can be seen, extensive areas where sets of a village, a market, a temple, or anything on a large scale can be put up, all these together make Chitranjali Kerala's only Studio in the holistic sense.

The indoor studio of Chitranjali covers 12,000 Sq. ft making it the second largest floor in Asia. This giant floor is sound proof and has a ceiling 50 ft. high.
Chitranjali is just a few minutes away from the internationally renowned Kovalam beach.

Kannada Movie about the underworld in Trivandrum

Kanteerava Kannada Cast: Duniya Vijay, Rishika Singh, Shubha Poonja Director: Tushar Ranganath

“If you have a chance to save a hundred people by killing one, so be it.” This sets the tone for the movie, which underlines Kanteerava’s (Vijay) struggle to fight the baddies.

Kanteerava (Vijay), born an orphan, is adopted by a family of which he is the caretaker. He makes a trip from his hometown Mysore to Thiruvananthapuram to make peace with the estranged daughter of his foster father and persuade her to come back to the family. But after death strikes her, he makes it his life’s mission to uproot the rowdyism that prevails in Thiruvananthapuram.

Adding a tinge of variety to this action-oriented movie is the love triangle of Kanteerava, Indu (Shubha) and Kasturi (Rishika). In a terrible twist of fate, Indu goes insane and Kanteerava vows to take care of her. It turns out that Indu is the estranged grand-daughter of Kanteerava’s foster father.

Director Tushar Ranganath has done a good job with this movie, which does fall short of expectations the original ‘Simhadri’ had raised. Chakri as the music director has rendered catchy numbers.

Rishika as a newbie has done justice to her role. Vijay steals the thunder with his dialogue delivery and fights. For good dose of action, Kanteerava does strike a chord.

Kerala State Motion Picture Academy

ACTIVITIES OF KERALA STATE CHALACHITRA ACADEMY

The Government of Kerala has rightly acknowledged the importance of cinema as the most popular art form of the state by constituting an autonomous, non-profit institution Kerala State Chalachitra Academy (Motion Picture Academy of the Kerala State) under the Cultural Affairs Department in the year 1998. The state could proudly claim its status as the first in the country to set up a film academy of its own. Since its inception, KSCA managed the anchorage of good cinema promoting it as a cultural expression. Apart from supporting the thriving Malayalam film industry at home, KCSA enabled Malayalam films to burst on to international screens and create a niche in the international film firmament. It has also opened the windows of world cinema to the cinema onlookers of the state.

A snapshot of the activities organized by the Academy is summarized as follows:

International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK)

The International Film Festival of Kerala, one of the prominent film festivals of India is hosted by the Academy. IFFK has come to be known as Asia's best managed and probably the world’s most people-centered film festival. The Festival attracts representation from the best films, renowned directors, technicians and spectators from all across the globe. The latest edition held during December 2007 saw some 6000 delegates from both within the country and abroad attending and 129 films from 40 countries being screened.

International Video Festival of Kerala (IVFK)

Media in Trivandrum

even though bit old, the post gives and idea of Media in Trivandrum.

Thiruvananthapuram has long been a center of media in India. Kerala Chandrika, the first newspaper of the State, was published from Thiruvananthapuram in the year 1789. The media also enjoyed the patronage of the Travancore kings. In 1836, Swathi Thirunal, the Travancore king organized a government press in the city [1]. The first Superintendent of the Press was the Rev. Sperschneider. The press was under Samathanam Maistry, one of the first batch of workmen trained in the Nagercoil Press.

Print

More than 30 dailies are currently published from Thiuruvananthapuram, including prominent dailies The Hindu, The New Indian Express, Malayala Manorama, Mathrubhumi, Kerala Kaumudi, Desabhimani, Janayugom, Deepika, Mangalam, Madhyamom and Janmabhoomi.
Additionally, several weeklies, fortnightlies, monthlies, bi-monthlies and quarterlies are published from various parts of the city. The Information & Public Relations Department is the main agency of the government to disseminate information to the public and to provide feedback. At the Government Secretariat, the Department of Information and Public Relations has provided a well-facilitated press room for accredited correspondents. The Tagore Theatre provides both public and private cultural performances and screening of films.

I do not know whether it is the right place to say this.. but since it impact development of Kerala, i thought of placing this here.

All these channels are not giving any importance to Malayalam. Most of the time, they broadcast other language songs and movies. This now impacted our adv industry and recently I saw adv casted by other language movie actors [ jose alukkas etc] and adv in other langauges telecasted in Kerala[malabar gold].
