Shirdi Special Express to be continued

Quote:
Purandeswari gets favourable response from Railway Board Executive Director

Board official is said to have promised to get the train regularised

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Railway authorities in Delhi have finally agreed to regularise the Visakhapatnam – Shirdi Special Express on a representation from Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari, who represents Visakhapatnam in the Lok Sabha.

The special train, introduced two years ago, has gained immense popularity and overwhelming patronage.

Special trains are normally regularised after a period of six months when they have sufficient patronage.

The train was being continued as a ‘special' ignoring the pleas of people of the region. It wasn't included in the Railway Budget either last year or this year. The bi-weekly train was reduced to once a week a few months ago.

The ECoR authorities introduced a special train from Bhubaneswar to Shirdi once a week causing apprehensions among people of the region that the ECoR authorities are planning to withdraw the popular Visakhapatnam – Shirdi Express.

With its last trip slated for June 29 and no announcement on its extension, it was strongly felt that the special would be withdrawn.

Ms. Purandeswari, who arrived here on Friday, spoke to Executive Director (coaching) of the Railway Board Mukhesh Nigam in New Delhi on the phone and underlined the importance of continuing the special train. Mr. Nigam is said to have told her that the Railway Board meeting was on and the train would be included in the new Railway Time Table to be issued on July 1. He is also said to have promised to get the train regularised.

Circular train late on inaugural run

The MEMU train connects Tirupati and Nellore to Chennai

New arrival: The inaugural Chennai-Nellore-Tirupati-Chennai circular train arriving at Tirupati railway station on Tuesday.

The much-awaited Chennai-Nellore-Tirupati-Chennai circular MEMU train arrived without much ado from Nellore at the Tirupati railway station on Tuesday, while its departure towards Chennai getting delayed by 45 minutes proved to be an avoidable irritant for the passengers.

The circular train was announced in the last budget and was meant to ease congestion in the vital Chennai-Nellore trunk route, Chennai-Tirupati route via Tiruthani and Puttur and also on the Tirupati-Nellore route via Gudur.

Apart from the pilgrim angle, the trains became essential with the Tirupati-Nellore-Tada belt gaining importance as an industrial hub, what with the setting up of Special Economic Zones and mega manufacturing facilities.

There has been a steep increase in the number of commuters in this region and the introduction of two circular trains has indeed been a welcome relief.

Low-key affair

While the inauguration was a low-key affair, the trains were formally flagged off at Chennai Central station this morning.

The two rakes are intended to travel to Nellore and Tirupati respectively, which will head to Tirupati/Nellore and then both towards Chennai, thus connecting the two bustling cities of southern Andhra Pradesh to Chennai metropolis.

The Chennai-bound train No.66036 left by 1645 hours, roughly 45 minutes behind schedule.

Earlier, the train No.66033 left the station for Nellore by around 11.25 am. Between the train No. 16054 Madras Express (10 a.m.) and the newly-introduced MEMU (4 p.m.), there are no trains in the high-density traffic route towards Chennai for six long hours, forcing pilgrims and local traders to pay through their nose for buses and private modes of transport.

While expressing happiness at the introduction of a new train, the local public requests the railway authorities to narrow the time gap.

Suburban train for Visakhapatna; survey soon

Quote:
The Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority has decided to launch a suburban train to ease the growing traffic, said the Vuda vice-chairman, Mr Kona Sasidhar. Speaking at the meet the press programme organised by the VJF Press Club here on Friday, Mr Sasidhar said in the first phase the suburban train will run from Convent Junction to NTPC Simhadri project at Paravada. The RITES has been asked to conduct a survey and submit a report within three months, he said. He said Vuda would seek funds from Steel Plant and NTPC to run this train.

He said the license given to MGM Selvee World in Vuda Park has been cancelled and the amusement park would be given to another agency shortly. The Vuda Park itself would get a facelift soon and the main fountain would be repaired. A traffic park would be established to create awareness among the children. The Vuda Children Theatre is being repaired and modernised to attract the children and similarly the park coming up in the old jail premises was being created as per the wishes of the people, Mr Sasidhar said. The Vuda is contemplating to build houses for the poor and few ventures were being planned at Kapulauppada and Pendurthy, he said. There would be no more layout regularisation or building penalisation scheme following orders from the court. He said due to regularisation of illegal constructions, the future plans were being upset.

Chamber for separate railway zone

Quote:
Satellite stations to ease traffic in Vijayawada mooted

A roundtable on ‘Vijayawada city development – railway' organised by the Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry has underscored the need for public representatives' initiative and involvement in prevailing upon the Railways to improve Vijayawada railway station.

Delinking Vijayawada from Secunderabad General Manager jurisdiction, a separate zone should be carved out for Vijayawada- Guntur-Visakhapatnam, they felt.

Addressing the meeting on Tuesday, the speakers stressed the need for constructing satellite stations to ease the traffic at Vijayawada railway station.

A few trains could be diverted or stopped at the satellite stations so that the platforms available here could be optimally used. Trains such as Duranto and Garibrath stop here for more than 20 minutes. But, the passengers cannot alight or board here.

Such trains could be diverted from satellite stations, they said. People here hardly benefit though 145 trains pass through the station every day.

The quota for Vijayawada is very less, or none at all.

Except intercity trains, the timings of every train suit none. So, there is a necessity to press more trains originating from Vijayawada to important cities such as Bangalore.
Meeting

Expressing the view that MPs were not taking necessary initiatives in developing the Vijayawada railway station, which is a major junction in the State, they pointed that the proposals such as trains to Raichur, Shonnur, Yeshwanthpur, fast passenger to Secunderabad remained on paper.

ACCI president M. Muralikrishna said a meeting with SCR General Manager and the Railway Minister was being planned at Amma Kalayana Mandapam here shortly. The meeting would bring the issues pending with the railway department to their notice and highlight the necessity to develop the Vijayawada railway station, he said.

Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Gaddam Subba Rao, Andhra Motor Merchants' Association secretary Subba Rao, Divisional Railway Users' Consultative Committee member S. Subba Rao, AP Lorry Owners' Association president Y.V. Eswar Rao, Lorry Owners' Association secretary K. Rama Rao, Taxation Bar Association president Pulla Rao, and Builders' Association secretary Siva Reddy spoke.

Waiting time for trains to come down at Vijayawada

The waiting time for all trains passing through or getting terminated at Vijayawada Railway station will come down considerably with the South Central Railway installing the Route Relaying Interlocking Facility.

Vijayawada is centrally located on the railway map and trains from Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bangalore come in or go out in three different directions, but a technical lacuna prevented officials to allow any train from any direction onto any one of the 10 platforms. This difficulty had led to trains waiting at the outer signals agonisingly for long duration.

In some cases passengers get down from the compartments and walk to the nearby road point leading even to fatal accidents on a couple of occasions.

Trains coming from Visakhapatnam side used to get restricted to platforms 1 to 4 and those coming from Hyderabad or Chennai to a few others. With the major work likely to begin after the monsoon rains, all the tracks would be inter-connected with overhead power lines laid to facilitate taking in any train onto any platform, Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager Anurag told The Hindu.

These works would, however, entail cancellation of several express/passenger trains for at least 3 weeks and some trains may be rescheduled or diverted to take up civil construction works at the Railway Yard in the city. This facility, which was felt necessary following increase in number of trains about 10 years ago, was pending for execution.

“People will be given three months' notice for cancellation/diversion of trains so that no inconvenience was caused to them, while making advance reservations,” Mr. Anurag added. The entire facility was likely to be operational by February-March 2012.

Gunupur-Puri train service starts, Rayagada elated

Quote:
KORAPUT: The Gunupur railway station in Rayagada district wore a festive look as around 10,000 people flocked to the station to witness the inaugural run of the Gunupur-Puri passenger train on Sunday. Connecting Gunupur-Naupada in Andhra Pradesh with broad gauge was a long-standing demand of the locals, after the railways stopped plying the only Gunupur-Naupada via Parlakhemundi train on narrow gauge in 2002.

"Today we are very happy to have our demand fulfilled. The train will be helpful not only to the people of Gunupur, but also to villagers of around 100 villages of Rayagada and Gajapati districts, as train fare is much cheaper than bus fare," said the convenor of the South Orissa Ralilway User Association, Satya Prakash Panda. "Undoubtedly, business and education in this Maoisthit area will spread with better rail connectivity," he added. Officials said the train will leave Gunupur at 8 am and will reach Puri at 9 pm. In its 90-km journey, the train will pass through as many as 14 stations.
