ZAMBIA | Kwite | Copperbelt City | Approved

PHOENIX Materials Zambia and HBW of South Africa have formed a joint venture to develop the proposed US $ 160 million mixed use development facility comprising a shopping mall, hotel, housing units and convention centre in Kitwe.

“We are developing this project which is themed as the 'Copperbelt City' and it will be a mixed use development facility costing US $ 160 million and will comprise housing units, a 210 room hotel, 134 retail shops, six screen cinema halls and food courts, conference facilities among other structures. In fact this will be the largest single investment on the Copperbelt outside the mining industry,” Musonda said.

COPPERBELT CITY

ABOUT 2,000 jobs will be created during the construction of a US$200million Copperbelt City shopping mall in Kitwe and a further 1,500 jobs once the mall is completed.

Construction of the mall is expected to commence in July this year and it is set to become the largest shopping mall in Zambia.

Copperbelt City shopping mall is a subsidiary of Lusaka’s Manda Hill Shopping Mall and will be developed by TGP Properties, a joint venture between HBW of South Africa and Phoenix Materials of Zambia.

Phoenix Materials chief executive officer Phesto Musonda said the project, which is expected to take between 18-24 months to complete, will supplement the mining sector, which has for many years been the main economic activity on the Copperbelt.

“The Copperbelt has attracted investment worth US$5billion in the mining sector alone since 2000 and the retail project will supplement the mining sector,” he said.

Mr Musonda was speaking to journalists on Saturday evening in Lusaka.

He said the positive economic environment is due to favourable copper prices on the international market, and stable political environment will also stimulate the growth of the retail industry and economic activity on the Copperbelt.

Mr Musonda, who is also Manda Hill shopping mall chairman, said TGP Properties is committed to enhancing the retail sector and to creating employment through the provision of state-of-the-art shopping malls.

He said Manda Hill shopping mall has created about 1,500 jobs after the completion of the expansion programme in 2010.

Earlier, HBW executive director Gareth Poole commended Government for creating a conducive environment that has attracted investment in various sectors.

Kwite is a misspelling of Kitwe. Please make the appropriate correction.
