Kadokawa coming to officially acknowledge MADs after Haruhi Suzumiya series catching huge popularity through fan-arts, BandaiNamco organizing live concerts to imitate the hundreds of fan-made IdolM@ster videos, karaoke shops trying to secure contracts with elusive doujin groups to get Touhou songs in their system, a voice synthesizer software (Vocaloid) being in direct competition with pop stars on weekly "ORICON chart" ranking of CD sales --- this is no longer a meme but a MODE or TREND. Really, you've got to see this (the 3 parts of them) if you had interests in iM@S, even the remotest. Luckily, it's fansubbed.

Touhou Project have much larger international fan base than iM@S. (In fact, outside of Japan, it seems the iDOLM@STER often means Xenoglassia, not the game!)

This one, even its derivative appeared on CNN, is considered to be the masterpiece among Touhou fans. It may be hard to understand why if you don't know much about the genre, but you'll worship the video if you were already familiar with the characters, and knew the fact this was made by a fan, with completely original CGs. (Touhou's official "CGs" are something like this.)

The video, BTW, is actually based on this fanmade scribble storyboard. Compare the two.

My favorite Touhou fan-works are again story MADs which are in Japanese. Instead, fan-arranged (very heavily arranged, that is) game songs are popular among international Touhou fans. (They very much are in Japan, too.) In fact, the above clip is meant to be a fan-made PV of the song arranged by another fan.

Recently, the primary fanbase of Vocaloid is not otaku, but teenage girls. This was unthinkable 2 years ago... The music industry is extremely excited and cautious at this, because Vocaloid and Doujin are so paradigm-changing that their business models need major changes.

Wotagei dance

Wotagei or otagei (ヲタ芸 or オタ芸?) refers to a type of dancing and cheering gestures performed by wota, fans of Japanese idol singers (and thus seen as Akiba-kei), involving jumping, clapping, arm-waving and chanting slogans. Wotagei is performed at concerts, or at events such as anime and manga conventions and meetings of idol fan groups, and it is thought to have developed from the ōendan, organised cheering squads common at sporting events in Japan. Wotagei is particularly associated with fans of Hello! Project and AKB48 idols, as well as fans of anime seiyū (voice actresses), who often perform theme songs for the series in which they appear.

"wotagei" is often seen as a over-excited idiocy by idol fans (of AKB or Mo-musu) in live concerts. But things started changing in mid-2009 when someone chose anime characters as his favorite idols and choreographed anime, seiyuu and "character theme" songs to go with glowstick wotagei. And now we have a second-generation wotagei. This is still a "work in progress".

Because of the quake, Reitaisai was rescheduled to May 8th (today). Touhou is "not my genre", but still went to Big Sight and spied on those Touhou-chu's(lol　http://www.reitaisai.jp/ and http://www.reitaisai.jp/sptop.html
As usual, hundreds of Dojinshi stalls and cosplayers. The catalog is the entry ticket and people hold them up as they enter.

The emerging fanbase of itasha came into the public eye when Miku-wrapped BMW raced in Super GT 2009.
Nowadays, numerous fan-sites and vendors exist (eg. http://www.itasya.net/) and assembling the materials to transform your car into an Itasha is not hard anymore.
