Chongqing to rebuild passenger cableway across river
Xinhua Excerpt
10 December 2016

CHONGQING -- A cableway across the Jialing River in southwestern Chongqing Municipality will be rebuilt to boost tourism, its operator announced Saturday.

Construction of the project will start next year and finish in 2019, bringing back scenes from when cable cars moved across the river, said a manager with Chongqing Passenger Cableway Corporation.

Operating since 1982 until 2011, the 740-meter-long Jialing River Cableway was China's first urban transport facility of its kind, designed to suit the terrain of the mountainous city.

It was a major mode of transport for local residents. A total of 100 million passenger trips were delivered by two cars running in opposite directions, with a daily passenger flow of 25,000 at peak times.

The cableway was suspended in March 2011 as its operation affected the construction of a bridge and light rail project. In 2013 the ropes were demolished.

Light rail??? Line 6 is full metro. There are no light rail lines in Chongqing unless one count the two monorail lines as such (and then it would be wrong, I consider them full metro too).

In China, elevated metro is called light rail. It's not the same things as what the rest of the world would call light rail.

It is just the local way of describing the system, because monorail Line 2 was the first built line, it was termed "light rail" to separate it from the heavy rail line 1.

No different to calling the system a subway or a metro, railway or railroad pending on where you live. The English term subway in China refers to a pedestrian underpass in most places, not a railway. Which has confused many tourists, following subway direction signs, I have met whilst travelling in China too.

Is the line 3 extension still planned to open this year?

The Ditiezu community and the official website have been strangely quiet about this.

Online I find only articles saying that it will open soon, without giving any specific date (except for dimlys1994's one).

If you have any update, please let us know

But 18th December has past and I didn't found any confirmation, so my thought is 28th or 31st December

opening date is still unknown, but at least photos of the new stations have been released.

Here is Jurenba station, which will become the new terminus:

latest press release does not provide exact timing:

Chongqing Metro opened the Line 3 Northern Branch today. Making the world's longest and busiest monorail line and network a bit more longer and busier.

10.99km in length with 6 stations. It is curious that this extension will be essentially run as a separate line from the rest of Line 3, requiring a transfer at Bijin.

They are calling this extension the Konggang line (i.e. airport line, I thought "airport" in Chinese was jichang...). They also call the Shaheba branch of line 6 the Guobo line (i.e. International Expo line), but AFAIK trains on that line continue past Lijia.

I shot these videos back in December, 2015 of the Chongqing Monorail Line 3. Obviously this is before the extension was opened, but its a nice look at the monorails in Chongqing.

Konggang is the Chinese pronunciation of the Japanese Kanji for Airport. It seems the Japanese have had a greater influence on the Chongqing Metro than just design and technology.

The Konggang Line section is folded on the strip map .
