Hyderabad to host world's largest law conference on Feb 5

The prestigious Commonwealth Law Conference, the largest event of its kind in the common law world, will be held in India after a gap of four decades.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the five-day long conference at Hyderabad on February 5 and Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia will deliver the thematic address.

"Rule of Law: Challenges and Opportunities" is the theme of the conference, which will hold 60 sessions focusing on human rights. Several hundred delegates from India and other Commonwealth countries will take part in the conference.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhury and Justice Sudershan Reddy of the Supreme Court of India will be among the keynote speakers along with Sir Sidney Kentridge QC, a doyen of the English and South African Bars.

Chairperson of the organising committee and former attorney general of India Soli J Sorabjee said the topics listed for discussion raise issues of mutual concern. "It is worthwhile to know and understand the experiences of different countries in the Commonwealth in tackling the problems raised by these issues and which may be usefully drawn upon consistent with the constitutional scheme and ethos of each country. Therein lies the real utility of this Commonwealth conference," he said.

NIRD to organise Rural Technology mela in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Feb 1 (PTI) City-based National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) is organising a four-day Rural Technology mela at its Rural Technology Park (RTP) here from tomorrow.

The mela to be held from February 2-5 will provide a platform for technology developers, users and Self Help Groups among others to take advantage of various technologiesavailable in different parts of the country, NIRD Director General Mathew C Kunnumkal told reporters here.

The RTP a centre in NIRD was established to transfer appropriate Rural Technologies to the rural people, towards achieving all round development in agriculture and rural sectors with overall economic development.

RTP has been conducting training programmes for imparting skills in the use of technology leading to production of value added products, Kunnumkal said adding this year NIRD intends to transfer technology to one lakh rural functionaries.

SHGs from over 13 states from the country are participating in the event and a variety of rural products including handicrafts, handlooms, Khadi and Village Industries products, medicinal and aromatic products would be on display and marketing. A total of 180 stalls have been put up for technology developers and developing of products, he said.

Hyderabad to be promoted as MICE destination

Andhra Pradesh Tourism will promote Hyderabad as a MICE and film shooting destination in the domestic and international market. According to Vatti Vasant Kumar, Minister of Tourism and Culture, Andhra Pradesh, the newly formed Hyderabad Convention Promotion Bureau is a joint initiative of private industry stakeholders and the state tourism department for promoting Hyderabad as a MICE destination. The Minister was speaking to the media at the ongoing Surajkund Crafts Mela in Haryana, where Andhra Pradesh is the theme state.

Speaking with TravelBiz Monitor, Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) said that the search for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Hyderabad Convention Promotion Bureau is on and will be appointed soon. Since the Bureau is a joint initiative by the government and private stakeholders of the travel and hospitality industry, he said that the CEO can either be a private industry nominee or a nominee of the government.

Sultania said that the recently opened Leonia International Centre for Exhibitions and Conventions (LICEC) has the capacity to host conventions of about 5,000 pax and together with Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) can become a destination for national and international conventions.

Hyderabad: Major IT event in March

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh will organize a two-day IT conference and exhibition March 1 and 2 in Hyderabad to project itself as the most preferred IT destination.

IT Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah on Thursday announced the event 'Advantage AP-annual IT summit 2011', the first of its kind event by the state government, to promote brand Andhra Pradesh.

To be organized jointly by Information Technology and Communications Department, Governmrnt of India in association with IT and ITES Industry Association of Andhra Pradesh (ITsAP) and Software Technology Park of India (STPI), Hyderabad, the annual event will focus on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and promote tier-II cities.

The conference will provide a forum for IT and ITES companies, IT infrastructure developers, academic institutions, governments and end customers of various industries to collaborate and leverage the enabling environment that Andhra Pradesh has to offer.

The minister said the government was keen to make Andhra Pradesh the number one in IT exports in the country. It presently occupies fourth position.

The participants in the event will get firsthand experience of why the state has quickly become the most preferred destination for the IT and ITES industry.

L Suresh, president, ITsAP, said the 3,200 sq m exhibition space at the event will enable participating companies to showcase the products developed in the state. Awards will be presented to companies in recognition of their excellent performance.

The seminars will deliberate on startup eco-system, new technologies, business models and innovation. Ratna Prabha, principal secretary, IT, pointed out that Andhra Pradesh, which started its IT journey 10 to 15 years after its competitors like Karnataka, has been growing consistently above the national average.

During 2009-10, the IT exports from the state were Rs.33,482 crore, contributing 15 per cent to the country's overall IT exports. It hopes to register a minimum of Rs36,000 crore exports during the current financial year.

"This time last year the IT exports were Rs 18,000 crore and this year we have already crossed Rs 25,000 crore. We hope to do a minimum of Rs 36,000 crore exports this year as the last quarter also yields goods results," she said.

Claiming that the sector was witnessing silent growth despite all the speculations and apprehensions, the official pointed out that during 2010, 42 lakh sq ft of IT space was sold or leased against 87 lakh sq ft taken during last three to four years.

HYDERABAD: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived here on Saturday evening to inaugurate the Commonwealth Law Conference at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) on Sunday.

Mr. Manmohan Singh, who was accompanied by Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily, was driven straight to Raj Bhavan on arrival at the Begumpet airport by an IAF aircraft.

He was received by Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Union Petroleum Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Deputy Speaker N. Manohar and APCC president D. Srinivas.

Diverse topics ranging from the global financial crisis to human rights will come up for discussion during the conference, the largest event of its kind in the common law world.

The prestigious conference, which is returning to India after 40 years, the last one having been held in New Delhi in 1971, will be attended by legal luminaries, judges and others from 53 countries. Chief Justice of India S. H. Kapadia will deliver the thematic address.

Legal topics: Addressing a media conference here on Friday, Soli J. Sorabjee, former Attorney General of India and Chairman, Local Organising Committee, said there would be 60 brainstorming sessions during the conference whose theme is “Emerging economies and rule of law: Challenges and Opportunities”. It will consist of four broad streams – constitutional & human rights law, corporation & commercial law, judicial independence and protection of human rights lawyers and contemporary legal topics.

He said Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Lord Lester of Herne Hill, a leading barrister from the UK, Sir Sidney Kentridge, a doyen of English and South African Bars, and Justice Sudarshan Reddy of the Supreme Court of India, would be among the keynote speakers while Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma would address the conference. About 10 Chief Justices from various Commonwealth jurisdictions would participate.

Ethical obligations: Mr. Sorabjee said in reply to questions that there would be discussion on issues like ethical obligations of lawyers towards the clients in respect of their fee, their democratic right to protest but not at the expense of the courts and clients, laws in various countries that transgress human rights and expeditious disposal of cases.

Hyderabad to host national cardiology meet

Hyderabad, Feb 10 (IANS) The third edition of 'Prevent India 2011', a national programme on preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels, will be held here from Feb 19, a statement said.

Medwin Heart Foundation is hosting the three-day event on preventive cardiology where eminent doctors will deliberate on 'when and how' to control the cardiovascular risks.

There will be updates on screening, pharmacological intervention and lifestyle modification, the statement added.

At least 80 percent of premature deaths from heart diseases and stroke could be avoided through healthy diet, regular physical activity and avoiding smoking, the statement added.

Non-communicable diseases cause 60 percent of global deaths every year, numbering at 35 million.

According to a survey, the risk of coronary artery diseases is four times higher than others. By 2020, India will bear 60 percent of the world's coronary artery diseases.

The programme will be useful to cardiologists, physicians, rehabilitation specialists, family doctors, and other people related to healthcare, the statement said.

BioAsia 2011, Hyderabad

The eighth edition of BioAsia, which is scheduled to be held in Hyderabad from February 21, is expected to attract investment of Rs.3000 crore, said, J Geetha Reddy, minister for major industries, Andhra Pradesh State.


During the inaugural session, projects such as Lonza Knowledge Centre in Genome Valley and Lepakshi Knowledge Hub in Anantpur would be launched. Lonza and Lepakshi have already acquired lands for their facilities in Genome Valley and Anantpur respectively.


Sri Biotech, which is the main sponsor of BioAsia 2011, will also launch its project, Sri Bio Integrated Discovery Centre during the inaugural session. The Pacific Hospitals with Tran-Scell Biologics, a unit for stem cell banking and research in Hyderabad, will also be launched on the occasion. A cancer research centre and hospital in collaboration with the Government of France, which is set to be the largest cancer facility in India, will be set up by Renaissance and Biogenesis by the Reniassance Cancer Hospital and Research Centre at Shamirpet, near to Hyderabad.


Addressing a press conference here, the minister said that delegates from 24 countries, including China, Malaysia and Iran, will take part in the event. The event will also witness releasing of a whitepaper on ‘Biotechnology in Asia-Sketch and Strengths by Grant Thornton. This year’s International Genome Valley Excellence awards will be presented to Anji Reddy, chairman of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and the Beijing Institute of Genomics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) Award, which was instituted last year, will be awarded to Dr D S Brar, promoter chairman, GVK Bio, Dr Roger L Williams, CEO, US Pharmacopeia and Dr Anwar Nasim, chairman, National Commission on Biotechnology (NCB), Pakistan.

Two-day Seed Congress opens in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The two-day Indian Seed Congress (ISC) 2011 is likely to create a platform for domestic seed companies to explore business development opportunities with global firms. The event, starting here on Tuesday, will attract 700 delegates including 50 foreign delegates from 14 countries to deliberate on free market principles and to streamline the deregulation process of a new breed of crops.

“The Indian seed industry has become the fifth largest in the world with an estimated value of `8,000 crore and an annual growth rate of 12 to 13 per cent,” said M Harish Reddy, Convener, ISC 2011.

He added that the industry has been playing a vital role in uplifting the socio-economy of rural India. Convention on development goals on March 3, 4

HYDERABAD: The Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE), under the aegis of the Indian Council of Social Science Research ( ICSSR), is organising the tenth development convention on 'Millennium Development Goals: Performance, Prospects and Challenges For South India' on March 3 and 4 on its premises on the Osmania University campus here.

IPE director Prof RK Mishra told reporters here on Monday that the themes includes analysis of performance, prospects and challenges on the aspects of health, poverty, employment, food security, education, women empowerment and sustainable development.

Two books on achievement of Millennium Development Goals in the Indian context will be released during the conference.

Sixty papers would be presented in 10 technical sessions. The best paper would be given a cash prize of Rs 10,000.

Convention convener Jayasree Raveendran said Prajapathi Trivedi, secretary, central performance management, would deliver the inaugural address. Prof Datuk Md Zabid Abdul Rashid, president and vice-chancellor, UNIRAZAK, Malaysia would be the special invitee. Hyderabad is set to host a Indo-German festival to highlight the diplomatic relations between India and Germany.

Germany is preparing for a German gala event in India to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

This was revealed by German Deputy Commissioner from the Foreign Office in Berlin, Jens Buentjen, who called on Hyderabad Mayor Banda Karthika Chandra Reddy at her Chambers on Tuesday.

Jens Buentjen informed that with a huge diversity of events, "Germany and India 2011-2012", will showcase the entire spectrum of German's cooperation with India - politics, business, culture, education, science and research - under the umbrealla theme 'Stadt Raeume-City Spaces'.

"Germany and India 2011-2012" is scheduled from autumn 2011 to autumn 2012, he said.

It is intended to extend and intensify long-term cooperation based on partnership in all fields, Jens Buentjen added.

The organizers are guided by the vision of Germany and India working together as partners, on the basis of mutual trust and shared values, to meet future challenges.

The India Council for Cultural Relations and the German Foreign Ministry had on October 18th, 2010, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate the realization of this project.

Jens Buentjen informed the Mayor of what has been planned so far, and sought her guidance and cooperation to make the celebrations in Hyderabad truly spectacular.

City to hold Statistics Olympiad

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad is going to conduct the first ever Statistics Olympiad soon. After the first Statistics Olympiad at the national level was held in the city in January, the event, conducted by the CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (AIMSCS) is going to expand to an international level.

With request from 15 countries to conduct the Statistics Olympiad, AIMSCS is looking to conduct the first ever international Statistics Olympiad next year. Students studying in class IX to XII are eligible to take the level one exam conducted separately for class IX and X(Stream- 1) and for class XI and XII (Stream- 2).

The national level Statistics Olympiad held in January got a great response whose results will be announced in June.

“This year we had 27,686 participants from across the country.

We have also received requests from several countries to hold an international level Olympiad. We are therefore, thinking of expanding the reach of the first ever national Statistics Olympiad to an international Olympiad next year. The Olympiad held on January 22 was the first of its kind in the country,” explained Prof SB Rao, director, AIMSCS.

“Although statistics is a young discipline, there is an immense demand for statisticians by governments, industry and academics throughout the world. Therefore, it is one of our aims to encourage talented young students to pursue careers in this field. To create awareness about the subject and encourage those with an aptitude for numerical reasoning, we constituted the Statistics Olympiad,” said Prof CR Rao, founder, AIMSCS.

Circa 1993, Hyderabad: A major medical conference took place in what was then just a historic capital city of a southern state. A few hundred delegates thronged the Nizam-built Jubilee Hall — the present legislative council building.

In 2010, some 10,000 delegates from across the globe assembled in the throbbing IT hub of the country for the latest edition of the same conference. But the venue was a world away from the one 17 years ago.

Things, clearly, have changed since the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), the first purpose-built and state-of-the-art convention facility in the country, came up in 2006.
“I have attended both the events. The differences are enormous, from amenities to infrastructure to hospitality and quality of services,” says Andhra Pradesh Tourism Secretary Jayesh Ranjan.

A cursory glance at HICC’s record as a venue in recent years would throw up names like the International Congress of Mathematicians, Aeronautical Congress, Pacific-Asia Travel Association and the International Congress and Convention Association Congress 2010.

Hyderabad has emerged as the convention capital of the country and a one-stop destination for business tourists.

HICC was the brain child of former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. “In 2003, he felt that, as an international city, Hyderabad should have a modern convention centre like the Dubai convention centre, which is the most popular in Asia,” Ranjan says.

According to HICC General Manager (Sales, Marketing & Distribution) Jaideep Khanna, on an average 2-3 events are organised every day, with 20 to 6,000 delegates visiting the centre. HICC sees 200,000-300,000 visitors a year and 500 business tourists per event. In 2010, it hosted close to 700 small and major events with 350,000 delegates.

“We are seeing a 12-13 per cent growth annually, and we hope to conduct 800 events this year,” Khanna says.

The centre, spread across a 15-acre landscaped area, was built with an approximate investment of Rs 300 crore by Cyberabad Convention Centre Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between Emaar Properties and the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC). It is managed by French hospitality and tourism management firm, Accor group.

The centre has a 6,480 sq m pillar-free internal hall, which can be partitioned into six small halls and can hold up to 400 tables in a banquet setting and 6,000 in a cocktail setting. The pre-function foyer area of 6,500 sq m offers a seating capacity for 4,000 delegates, with an additional flexibility of up to 6,500.

The main hall has an in-built rear projection screen of 18-16 ft along with the latest sound systems built into the roof to provide a concert-like experience. It has 32 halls to organise multiple meetings simultaneously. The meeting room has a 500-guest reception area, with 16 terminals for registrations. The main reception has 16 workstation back office.

HICC is attached with the Novotel hotel, forming a unique complex to provide both accommodation and conference facility, reducing the travel burden for tourists, Khanna says. Around 700 common staff are employed for both the facilities.

HICC also provides video production facility and, according to Khanna, the videos are made by its in-house professionals at the studio within the centre. It has deployed all the latest technology to ensure safety of guests.

“To host an international event, adequate planning is required three-four years ahead of the event. The selection and bidding is a lengthy process. “According to our finding, for any convention with 1,000 delegates, the overall economy of the city gets a Rs 3-crore benefit — minimum of three-night stay per 1,000 delegates. The earnings comes from the hotel room tariff, payment for transport, shopping, vendors and other service providers,” says Ranjan.

Last year, it generated a turnover of Rs 50 crore. “Financial growth is progressing annually and 2010 saw the best financial performance. If things remain favourable, we expect a 10-15 per cent annual average growth,” Khanna said.
