Hyderabad to play host to India's first AppFest

Quote:
The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), a professional body representing the online and mobile value-added services (VAS) industry in India, will be organising AppFest 2012, the country’s first apps event, in Hyderabad from December 13.

“The three-day AppFest is the first step towards realisation of the tremendous opportunity, and will seek to foster an environment where businesses, developers, platforms and networks are incentivised for their efforts,” IAMAI president Subho Ray said, adding that over 600 app developers will be participating in the event.

‘Apps’, less than 5 years after the term was popularised, signifies some serious stuff in India –– the front door for all businesses, opportunity for entrepreneurship and innovation in smaller towns and cities, creation of enormous core and ancillary job opportunities. The faint whispers of an ‘apps economy’ in the US in 2009, therefore, are becoming a loud and serious topic of discussion across the world in 2012, according to IAMAI.

It is estimated that in the US alone, apps have generated half a million new jobs between 2007 and 2012. In India, given the strong base of mobile users, rapidly-growing base of Internet users, availability of innovative minds and depth of resource pool, the opportunity can be enormous, Ray said.

AppFest 2012 will have three tracks –– Talkathon, Hackathon and Challengathon. Developers will be able to share ideas on technology, revenue models and current opportunities with each other. It will also provide an opportunity to participants to compete and create on-spot customised solutions for brands present and immediate opportunity to work with them on larger projects, he added.

WAO to host 4-day WISC 2012 from December 6 in Hyderabad

Quote:
The World Allergy Organization (WAO), an international alliance of 89 regional and national allergy, asthma and immunology societies will be organising four-days WAO International Scientific Conference (WISC 2012) from December 6-9, 2012 at Hyderabad International Convention Centre, Hyderabad.

WISC 2012 will be inaugurated by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad and the chief guest of the conference. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Vasant Kumar, Minister of Tourism, Sport and Culture of Andhra Pradesh, and Dr DL Ravindra Reddy, Minister for Health & Family Welfare Andhra Pradesh, will be presiding the event.

The main aim is to provide a multidisciplinary forum for a wide range of health care professionals who treat patients with asthma and allergic diseases including allergists, pulmonologists, ENTs, dermatologists, internists, paediatricians, gastroenterologists, clinical immunologists and primary care physicians.

A faculty of 90 internationally known experts will deliver highlights in immunotherapy which is a General Practitioner Programme, and a Patient and Public Forum.

Allergic diseases and asthma, like other non-communicable diseases, are escalating to epidemic proportions worldwide and up to 30-40 per cent of the world’s population are now affected by some form of allergy. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has estimated 300 million individuals have asthma worldwide, a figure that could increase to 400 million by 2025 if trends continue. The complexity and severity of allergic disorders, including asthma, continue to increase especially in children and young adults. This is paralleled with a rising prevalence of life threatening allergies like food allergies, drug allergies and anaphylaxis and more complex forms.

“As the prevalence of allergic disease and asthma rises in countries around the world especially in children regardless of their economic status, so do the socioeconomic costs both direct such as interference with breathing during day or night, emergency department visits, and hospitalizations, and indirect such as reduced quality of life, reduced work productivity and absenteeism,” said Professor Ruby Pawankar, conference president and president of the WAO.

Prof Pawankar further added that this offers an opportunity for low, middle, and high-income countries to join forces in addressing a major global challenge that threatens health and economies alike.

According to Professor Stephen Holgate, scientific programme chair the enormous rise in asthma and allergy prevalence worldwide – but especially in those countries which are developing so rapidly – is a concern such as is occurring in India. Prof. Holgate said, “We must try to uncover the causative agents involved and deliver a prevention programme. Moreover, comorbidity of allergic diseases emphasizes that we must understand more about why different organs in individuals express allergy and others do not.”

According to Professor Lanny Rosenwasser, organising chair, the WISC 2012 meeting in Hyderabad will bring international experts to India in a timely exchange of ideas and new information to manage these global public health concerns. The emerging science of allergy and immunology makes new and effective means of treatment for serious diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and allergic skin diseases.

Professor Rosenwasser further stressed that new research and international expert consensus recommendations will be presented that will impact on the future management of these globally prevalent conditions, including the early origins of disease and evidence-based treatment strategies as well as associations with climate change, biodiversity, the role of the microbiome in non-communicable diseases, and practical aspects that help to improve daily clinical care and practice parameters and lead to improved quality of life.

Visakhapatnam: The Indus Foundation in association with Government of Andhra Pradesh and Federation of A P Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) will conduct Indo-American Education Summit cum Expo-2013 in Hyderabad on February 2 and 3, 2013 with an objective to explore opportunities for collaborations between foreign universities and Indian institutions.

The Managing Trustee of The Indus Foundation SB Anumolu told reporters here on Friday that after the revolutions in green, white, industrial and Information Technology, the next big revolution to affect the mankind globally is the education revolution.

He said the Indus Foundation is a non-profit educational trust dedicated to the promotion of higher education in India with an important mission to galvanise high-impact educational collaborations between Indian institutions and reputable foreign universities.

Mr Anumolu who had earlier served as DIG of Police said they are encouraging collaboration in the areas of students’ and faculty exchange and research exchange programmes between Indian and foreign universities in the summit.

He felt that joint research programmes between India and foreign universities would help contain the impact of dreaded diseases like Swine Flu besides it would develop Nano technology, Robotics and Computer Gaming which has lot of job opportunities.

He said over 100 foreign universities from 30 countries would be participating in the summit, the students and their parents can have a direct interaction with the experienced faculty members for which there is no entry fee. Stating that there was tremendous response for their earlier four events, he said this was the fifth time they are conducting the summit.

Hyderabad’s up-market residential area, Banjara Hills, has got a luxury hospitality address in Radisson Blu Plaza. The hotel is designed to deliver a truly vibrant, contemporary and engaging hospitality experience in sync with the ‘Yes, I can’ service philosophy of the Radisson brand, says Nishan Silva,

Q: Hyderabad is considered a tough market for hospitality players with lot of supply coming in. How this has impacted the ARR and RevPARs in the city hotels?
A: Hyderabad is of course a tough market. As per the latest STR report the hotel room rates in the city has been more or less flat. There has been growth, but that was marginal. But the demand is also growing. Hyderabad has a good corporate base. Top 100 of the Fortune 500 companies have their base in the city.

Hyderabad has emerged as a leading MICE destination in the country, because of large convention facilities. The government is very proactive in bringing big international conferences into the city, which ultimately creates a lot of demand for hotel rooms.

HYDERABAD: Move over Mumbai and Delhi, mana Hyderabad has become a new hub for international conferences in the country. After high-profile events like CoP-11, more and more such global events are lined up for 2013. It's the high quality at low budget that helped Hyderabad emerge as a favourite venue, say organisers.
Organisers of various meetings and conventions held in the city recently, said that the cost of holding such events here was around three times lesser than Mumbai. Standing testimony to these claims is the long list of upcoming international events to be held in Hyderabad.

The list includes, Congress of the Asia Pacific Academy of Opthalmology in January with around 5,000 delegates; World Congress of the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics; and an international conference on oncology in February.

"Hyderabad is very economical when compared to other major cities in India with affordable hotels and reasonably priced venues and food," said Rajan Sankar, country manager of the UN Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), which recently held its global board meeting here.

"Moreover the quality is not compromised as the facilities here are on par with Mumbai and Delhi. Our international delegates were very impressed with the city's hospitality and Hyderabad will definitely be on the top of our list for any future events," Sankar said.

Not just the large-scale events like the bio-diversity conference, the city has become popular with even small-budget organisers. Samala Venu, convenor of the just-concluded International Magicians' Convention said while their event was organised here at a budget of around Rs 40 lakh, the same three-day event in Mumbai would have cost them around Rs 1.2 crore.

"A decent conference room in a star hotel costs just Rs 7,000 here, but the same in Mumbai or Delhi could go up to Rs 20,000," Venu said. Organisers of the recently held Indian Luxury Expo too said that while the commercial tax they paid was around 20%, in Mumbai it would be around 40%.

The convention centres and venues in the city are no less compared to Singapore or Malaysia, but the support services like transport and accommodation which make the difference, forcing many organizers to shift their venue from other metros to Hyderabad.Apart from affordability, the culture too attracts tremendous attention. "Hyderabad is culturally active with many heritage sites but at the same time, very urban with IT hub and so many scientific institutes," said Dr Suvarna Alladi of World Federation of Neurology.

"Delegates at our meeting loved the food here, the tourist sites and also the airport. Hyderabad is the right place for these events and is also much safer, which gives it an edge over the rest," she added.
