WWW2011 conference to discuss future of web

Quote:
HYDERABAD: Did you know that less than 10 percent of the Indian population uses the world wide web? Or that the next billion users of the internet will come from emerging markets like Brazil , China , India , Indonesia and Russia ??

The future of the web will be under discussion at the 20th international World Wide Web Conference (WWW2011) here, a prestigious event that India, with one of the world's fastest growing population of internet users, will host for the first time. Beginning March 28, it will be attended by 800 delegates from 49 countries.

"The conference will debate the future of the Web, which is important for India," S. Sadagopan, director of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Bangalore, told IANS.

"It is more relevant for India, especially in the context of high mobile penetration among the younger generation, improving literacy levels, large young and English-speaking population."

IIIT , Bangalore, in cooperation with the IIIT, Hyderabad, and the Institute of Information Technology, Bombay (Mumbai), is hosting the event.

The five-day meet has the theme "web for all". It will debate technical challenges in overcoming the digital divide and ways to bring the web to underserved populations. The event will be addressed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the WWW Conference director and inventor of the web. It will also have research papers that can shape the web of tomorrow.

World wide web currently has two billion users. However, of the 4.8 billion people living in Asia and Africa, only one in five has access to the web. In India, for instance, the 100 million web users constitute less than 10 percent of the total population of 1.2 billion.

The event will discuss challenges like developing content in local languages, poor PC penetration and lack of infrastructure to connect the next billion users.

WWW2011 will discuss, debate and help set the future direction of the Web. It will focus on the regional and global impact of expanding open Web platform for application development.

Tim Berners-Lee will deliver a visionary keynote address on "designing the web for an open society".

With the social media witnessing explosive growth, there will also be a panel discussion on "Social media: source of information or bunch of noise?".

According to conference organizers, Wikipedia has over 3.5 million pages with descriptions of entities. Flickr members have uploaded over five billion photos, YouTube has 35 hours of videos uploaded to the site each minute, and Twitter users generate 65 million tweets a day.

Is there useful information in social media like tweets, how to sift through the vast amounts of social media and filter out the spam/offensive content are some of the questions the participants will debate.

The participants include chief information officers, IT directors and decision-makers from the public and private sector and researchers, technologists and developers from institutions and technology-driven businesses.

There will be 81 technical papers, 90 posters, 25 demos, 12 tutorials, nine workshops and a PhD Symposium.

"It is a research conference. It brings out best of the research in the world," said Sadagopan. Referring to the quality of research, he said 80 best papers were selected from almost 700 papers submitted from around the world.

The accepted papers have been put into various categories like search, local language content, access, privacy, avoiding pornography, data mining.

These research papers shape the Web of tomorrow. Technologies and scientific innovations come from such a research.

"Many technologies which we take for granted today in fact came from award- winning papers of yesterday."

ICSI to set up knowledge centre in city

Hyderabad: The Institute of Company Secretaries of India has decided to house a world-class knowledge centre in Hyderabad by the end of 2012.
The company has already purchased nearly 1.3 acres of land from APIIC at Uppal industrial area at a cost of Rs 3 crore, ICSI secretary and CEO NK Jain said here on Tuesday. The knowledge centre, to be put up on lines of ICSI’s Centre for Corporate Governance, Research and Training set up in Mumbai in 1999, will be a full-fledged campus housing facilities for boarding and lodging, conferencing, innovation, classrooms, auditoriums, library among other things. It will be a world-class knowledge centre in terms of academic input, resources, training and development for managers and directors of corporates. It will have top-notch faculty not just from India but from abroad as well, Jain said. According to Jain, ICSI had zeroed in on Hyderabad, despite the taint of the Satyam scam, for the ambitious project because the city had emerged as a major hub for the IT/ITeS sector and had the latest in terms of infrastructure.
“The centre will be strategically located and we will be getting into tie-ups with various companies in the city to offer training programmes even as the centre will focus on training independent directors,” he explained. Meanwhile, ICSI is also targeting overseas markets like CIS countries, Latin America and Africa and plans to open offices there to train company secretaries as well as facilitate the movement of Indian company secretaries to those nations.

http://www.business-standard.com/ind...change/434987/

The Centre for Climate Change of the Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI) will be organising an internation-al conclave and exhibition on climate change for the first time in India at Hyderabad from October 12. The theme of the event will be clear energy and energy security.

India has set a target to reduce its carbon emission by 20 per cent by 2020. The country’s per capita carbon emission is the lowest at 1.8 tonne compared with other countries at 18-39 tonne. India is the fifth largest polluted country in the world.

According to a report, nearly 60 per cent of the country’s landmass is susce-ptible to earthquakes, over 8 per cent is prone to floods, around 76 per cent of its coastline is prone to cyclones and 68 per cent area is prone to drought.
“Our aim to create awareness and training programme, besides capa-city building of experts, research and development,” Shalini Sharma, head, Centre for Climate Change, said.

Going by Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, it’s Hyderabad and not the national capital which has more world class facilities.

Announcing that India would be hosting the eleventh Conference of the Parties (CoP-11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Ramesh said, “Hyderabad and not New Delhi has more of world class facilities to organise the show, scheduled from October 1-19, 2012.” He clarified that the choice has nothing to do with his representation of the State in the Rajya Sabha.

He was addressing the Stakeholders’ Consultation on the Convention on Biological Diversity on Monday. Stressing on certain major themes that need to be worked upon prior to the event, he pointed to the need for partnership with the corporate houses and felt water management and promotion of marine biodiversity can be major areas of cooperation.

3rd NAR convention in city from July 23

The National Realtors Association, India (NAR) along with the Andhra Pradesh Realtors Association (APRA) will be organising its third annual convention on July 23 and 24 in the city. The meet, expected to be the biggest NAR convention so far, will be held at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre and will have close to 1,000 property consultants from across the globe participate in the event. Besides brokers from Bangalore, Chennai, Vijaywada, New Delhi, Pune and Mumbai, realtors from USA and Europe are also expected to attend the convention.

Speaking at a press conference in the city on Wednesday, to announce the agenda of the meet, D Sreedhar Reddy, president, APRA said, "Our objective is to showcase properties in Hyderabad through this conference and attract more investors to the city." He added, "Though the real estate market in Hyderabad recently went through a rough patch, things are looking up now. The infrastructure of the city is better than in most metros and that is what we wish to highlight through the two-day event."

The third chapter of the NAR convention (the first two were held in Pune and Chennai) will also see a number of industry experts speaking on issues and opportunities related to the realty sector. On the list are Keki Mistry, vice-chairman of HDFC, Ajit Rangnekar, dean of Indian School of Business (ISB), Lalit Kumar Jain, president, Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association (CREDAI), Jeffrey Horn Berger, NAR-USA, among others.

Apart from panel discussions, a property show will also be organised as part of the event where about 40 developers from across the country such as Lodha group, Phoenix, Botanika, Mantri and Raheja developers, will showcase their ventures. Educational modules especially designed by APRA for realtors participating in the convention will also be conducted during the two-day meet. "The perception about the broker community is fast changing. Through this meet we wish to further educate property consultants and bring them under the NAR umbrella. This will help them compete better in both the national and well as international market," said Shailender Singh, chairman of the convention.

Hyderabad to host U.N. meet on biodiversity next year

Quote:
Hyderabad will host a major conference of the United Nations on biodiversity from October 1—19 next year, Union Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh said on Monday.

“Hyderabad has been chosen as the venue, though New Delhi was also in contention, to host the 11th conference of parties to the U.N. Convention on biodiversity. It is a great honour that India is hosting the conference,” Mr. Ramesh announced in Hyderabad this afternoon.

The Union Minister met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to discuss the preparations for the conference which will discuss issues related to biodiversity and biosafety.

Addressing a press conference later, the minister said Prime Ministers of some countries and environment ministers from 194 countries apart from representatives of international organisations like World Bank and Asian Development Bank would attend the conference.

In all, about 8,000—10,000 participants from 194 countries were expected to take part in the conference that would discuss issues governing use and transportation of hazardous substances, the impact of genetically—modified crops among a host of others, Mr. Jairam added.

“For the first time in 60 years, an Indian city will get into international map by hosting such a major conference. We will hopefully have a Hyderabad Agreement or a Hyderabad Protocol or a Hyderabad Declaration at the end of it. Clock for the conference starts ticking today,” the Union Minister said.

Infrastructure facilities
Hyderabad has been “consciously and deliberately” chosen to host the U.N. event given the “superior infrastructure facilities” available as compared to New Delhi.

There is no match-fixing in this. Selection of conference venue was done in a fair and transparent manner as Hyderabad is an important centre for bioresources. It is not only culturally significant but also scientifically important,” Mr. Jairam noted.

The Government of India would spend Rs. 87 crore on hosting the conference while a joint co-ordination committee headed by the Union Environment Minister and the AP Chief Minister would oversee all the arrangements.

Asked if the political turmoil in the State, particularly Hyderabad, would affect the conference, the Union Minister said irrespective of politics, everyone should welcome the conference in India. “I don’t deal with political stability,” he quipped.

Mr. Jairam said the conference would benefit Andhra Pradesh by giving a major impetus for tourism. “There is a large Buddhist circuit in AP which can be promoted. Besides, it will provide an opportunity for promoting handicrafts and forest-based products by enabling artisans and tribal federations to showcase their products,” he pointed out.

Union Environment Secretary Tishya Chatterjee and other senior officials were present on the occasion.

Some more news about COP -11 to be held in Hyderabad!!!!

Quote:
Forget Kyoto Protocol, from 2012 it's Hyderabad Protocol

A Hyderabad Protocol like the Kyoto Protocol? For the first time since Independence, a global conference of the UN will be held in India. Called the 11th Conference on Biodiversity, it will be held in Hyderabad from October 1-19, 2012, with 194 countries taking part.

That means an agreement or a declaration reached on biosafety will be named after the Charminar city — such as the Hyderabad Declaration or the Hyderabad Protocol.

"So far, there is no single agreement, declaration or treaty named after any of our cities. This will be for the first time Hyderabad will be on the international map in terms of the declaration at the conference," environment minister Jairam Ramesh said after meeting Andhra Pradesh chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy to finalise plans for co-ordination with the Centre on organising the conference.

"This is a prestigious conference for us. We are expecting about 8,000 delegates, including prime ministers of some nations, to participate ," added Ramesh.

The Convention on Biological Diversity, known as the biodiversity convention, is an international legally binding treaty. Its objective is to develop national strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. It is often seen as the key document regarding sustainable development.

The convention was opened for signature at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro on June 5, 1992, and came into force on December 29, 1993. The 10th conference of parties was held in Nagoya, Japan in October 2010. The protocol adopted in Nagoya - the Nagoya Protocol - focuses on access to genetic resources, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilisation to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Quote:
Source : Ramesh said Hyderabad was selected after considering various factors like facilities for hosting international conventions, transportation and connectivity. It seems to have scored over the national capital – usually the automatic choice of politicians for such conventions – on all these factors.

Ramesh said Andhra Pradesh would benefits from the conference in three ways. ''First, it will create a major impetus for tourism, as we plan to develop Buddhist circuits for attracting foreign tourists. Second, the conference will provide an opportunity for the craftsmen and tribal people to exhibit their handicrafts and forest-based products for an international audience. And finally, Hyderabad will get a permanent place on the map of international conventions .''

Ramesh said it would be the largest international conference ever to be hosted by India. Some 8,000-10,000 participants are expected to attend the twin events, to be held mainly at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC).

Hyderabad likely to host Partnership Summit in 2012

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/...cle2107848.ece

Hyderabad, June 15:
The city of pearls and Nizami culture, Hyderabad will again play host to the Partnership Summit in 2012.

The Partnership Summit has been positioned as the flagship event for the industrial sector where the State of Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad get an opportunity to showcase potential to prospective investing community.

This follows a decision made by the State after discussions the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, had with the Centre, on hosting the event.

Hitherto CII-Partnership Summit was an annual event in Hyderabad traditionally held in January. However, the event was not held in the recent years here. Even the proposed Global Summit, which was to be hosted in Hyderabad earlier this year could not be held here due to Telangana agitation and uncertainty expressed by industrial sector and event hosts.

The Central Government has given in principle consent to host the summit. This follows a recent visit of the Union Commerce Minister, Mr Anand Sharma, and his discussions with the State Government representatives.

The summit plays a host to representatives from foreign countries and their trade bodies, industries ministries of various States, industrialists and thought leaders drawn from different sectors such as IT, manufacturing among others.

In the 2011 summit held at Mumbai, delegates from nine countries and representatives of their trade bodies took part.

Indpack 2011 show in Hyderabad

Quote:
The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) is organising Indpack 2011, the 14th national packaging exhibition, from November 24 to 26, 2011, at Hyderabad International Convention Centre, Hyderabad.

“We will have 250 stalls at the convention centre and we are expecting 10,000 business visitors this year,” said B K Karna, deputy director and branch head, IIP, Hyderabad. He also added that more than 25 user industries are participating in this event, out of which 19 are from Andhra Pradesh. Foreign countries having joint venture with Indian companies are also participating. Countries like Holland, Germany, the US, Japan, and the UK have shown interest in the event, according to Karna.

India, one of the top ten economies in the world, has the second-largest GDP among emerging economies based on purchasing power parity (PPP). The country is fourth largest economy in the world on PPP basis and the sheer size of the economy has opened up new business opportunities to the world in all walks of businesses in general and packaging industry in particular. Packaging industry in India is one of the fast-growing industries, which has its influence on all industries directly or indirectly.

The Indian packaging industry is currently worth $18.8 billion with a growth rate of above 15% per annum. Growth rate is expected to be doubled within coming two years. India's per capita packaging consumption is less than worldwide average, which offers massive business opportunities to the Indian packaging industry.

The large and fast-growing Indian middle-class population and the growth of organised retail sector are the catalysts to growth in packaging. The Indian middle-class population is above 50 million and is expected to reach 583 million by 2025. (Source: McKinsey Report)

The Indian retail market is the 5th largest retail destination globally and has been ranked the second most attractive emerging market for investments. This market is currently valued at US$511 billion and is expected to rise to US$1.3 trillion by 2018. (Source: www.ibef.org)

Packaging of essential products like food, beverage, milk, vegetable, food grains and pharma are the key driving segments because of the huge domestic consumption.

India's imports at 20-25% with a value of $125 million of its total packing machinery indicate further opportunities not only for Indian companies to increase their share in domestic market but also for international companies to explore new business opportunities in India.

The show will invite visitors from the entire value chain on packaging industry. Some of the key buyers will be from: pharmaceuticals, processed and fresh food, beverage, agriculture, dairy, chemicals and confectionery, perfume and toiletries, cosmetics and toys, sports goods, textiles, co-operative societies, plastic bottle / pouch-making & printing, training institutions, exporters, retail chain managers, nodal agencies of Government of India including Spice Board, Coir Board, Tea Board, APEDA, R&D professionals and policy-makers.

The show will meet all the needs of packaging industry from all the major sectors like packaging, machinery and other services.

Conference
National conference will also be held on modern trends in packaging of food & pharmaceutical products.

Packaged food industry in India is growing at more than 15% p.a. Though India is one of the largest producer of food and agro-based products, 30% gets wasted due to non-availability of processing / packing / inefficient supply chain - cold storage facilities etc.

With increasing number of modern trade outlets the face of trade is changing forever. Consumer expectation and behaviour is changing and demand for convenience in packaging is on rise.

Pharmaceutical packaging occupies a considerable portion of the overall drugs and pharmaceutical market in India and is growing steadily.

Counterfeiting and the regulatory requirements are the need of the hour for pharmaceutical products packaging. The conference is designed to meet the need of the food and pharmaceutical packaging for today's market.

Fifty Higher Education Leaders Converge at Hyderabad from Sept 2-4

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Friday, September 02, 2011 -- (Business Wire India)

In a unique initiative, EDU magazine is organising a three-day Vice Chancellors’ Retreat at Hyderabad. More than 50 leaders in higher education including Vice Chancellors, Directors and Deans of leading universities, management institutes and engineering colleges are participating in this conclave being held from September 2-4, 2011.

This event will focus on how higher education institutes can achieve excellence through able leadership. The theme of this conclave is “The Pursuit of Prestige”, which has been inspired by a book, co-authored by Dr. Charles Goldman of the Rand Corporation, USA. Dr Goldman is an expert on higher education and will be a keynote speaker at the conclave. Dr Andre Beteille, one of the foremost thinkers of our times and author of the book Universities at Crossroads will kick off the discussions at the Retreat. Other prominent speakers and participants include Dr B.N. Jain, Vice Chancellor, BITS Pilani, Dr R.Venkata Rao Vice Chancellor, National Law School of India University and Dr Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU.

Discussing the central idea behind the event, Dr Pramath Raj Sinha, Managing Director, 9.9 Media said: “The higher education sector is witnessing dramatic shifts in terms of pace, scale, nature, role and impact. This is leading to unprecedented challenges and opportunities. All institutions, whether government or private, are now in ‘pursuit of prestige’, i.e., excellence in the field of education. This calls for substantive changes in the role and influence of the heads of the institutions. The Vice Chancellors’ Retreat aims to provide them with a platform to discuss their evolving roles and responsibilities.”

In a run up to this event, EDU magazine conducted an extensive survey amongst the higher education community—and received responses from more than 500 leading academics on what factors contribute to enhancing the prestige of institutions. The results of this survey will drive the agenda of this Retreat. A summary of the survey is being published in the September 2011 issue of EDU magazine.

The Retreat will discuss how the various pillars of higher education – students, faculty, infrastructure, and research—contribute to enhancing prestige. What makes Harvard or MIT institutions to reckon with? Do schools make their alumni, or do students make an institution? These and many more topics will be deliberated by the delegates.
