Hyderabad to organize COP-11 biodiversity conference from October 1 to 9, 2012

Source: pharmabiz

Quote:
Hyderabad is gearing up to host the International Biodiversity Conference to be held from October 1 to 9, 2012, at Hyderabad International Convention Centre near Hitex.

Earlier, the Central government had chosen Hyderabad over other four metros of the country for the event. They found Hyderabad to be the apt destination as it has the ability and logistic infrastructures for holding such an international event. This is the 11th Conference of Parties (COP-11) on biological diversity. It is expected that more than 30 countries and 12,000 participants will take part in this convention.

India has not hosted a meeting of a Conference of the Parties to a multilateral environmental agreement since 2002. This will be the first meeting to assess the implementation of the Nagoya biodiversity compact. It is expected that all countries who are Parties to the Convention will submit their national biodiversity strategies and action plans, by the time of the meeting next year.

The Hyderabad meeting is also important as it is widely expected that two new protocols to the Convention will have entered into force: the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization, and the Nagoya -Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. It is expected that both of these protocols will have force of law should they receive sufficient numbers of instruments of ratification in the coming months. Currently, the Nagoya Protocol has 24 signatories and the Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol has 23.

The state and central ministries of environment and forest departments are working to finalize the guest room bookings in the city for the visiting delegates. Union Forest and Environment Secretary, Dr T Chatterji, visited the city and held talks with various agencies for the smooth execution of the international event. The meeting of the Conference of the Parties will also coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity as well with the Rio+20 meeting scheduled earlier in the year.

ESCI to hold intl meet on climate change from October 12

Source: http://www.business-standard.com/ind...ber-12/451816/

Quote:
The Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI) will be organising the first International Conclave and Exhibition on Climate Change (ICCC-2011), with the theme ‘Clean energy and energy security’ in Hyderabad from October 12.
The three-day conference will focus on climate change-related challenges, adaption and mitigation measures for the same, while the exhibition will have networking interactive sessions and round-table discussions to formulate strategies for ‘combating climate change’.
“Based on the learnings from the conclave, ESCI will formulate recommendations and submit them to the central government, which in turn will put forth the submissions at the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference, scheduled to be held in Durban, South Africa, from November 28 to December 9, 2011,” Shalini Sharma, head, Centre for Climate Change at ESCI, told mediapersons here on Friday.
The conclave will have Australia and Germany as support countries with the host being the Andhra Pradesh government. In all, 70 papers will be presented during the three-day event, she added.
According to AK Poothia, director-general of ESCI, in today's world, 80 per cent of power is produced through fossil fuels like coal, gas and oil. While these resources are limited, they are also contributors of green house gases, which affect climate.
Nearly 60 per cent of the country’s landmass is susceptible to earthquakes, over per cent is prone to floods, nearly 76 per cent of its coastline is prone to cyclones, and 68 per cent of its area is prone to droughts, In addition, increasing threats of GLOFs (glacial lake outburst floods), heat waves, precipitation extremes due to the changing climate, pose risks to vulnerably located populations in India. Efforts have to be made to manage these risks as well, he said.
“India’s reliance on coal, for more than half its energy needs, is an issue of great concern for energy security. India is, therefore, seeking alternative renewable energy sources to meet the projected economic growth rate since these would be non-exhaustible as well as free,” Poothia added.

Conference on food supply chain management

Source: http://ibnlive.in.com/news/conferenc...83-60-119.html

Quote:
BANGALORE: “In order to increase agricultural productivity, we need to inform and educate farmers first,” said Professor N Viswanadham, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
Inaugurating the conference on ‘Farm to Fork: Best Practices in Agri and Food Chain Supply’ organised by Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) here on Wednesday, he said, “There are four elements of agriculture that serve the eco-system: land, water, power and institutions. In addition to these elements, affordability, availability and awareness are other areas where innovations can be brought about in terms of supply chain management.”
Talking about ITC’s E-Choupal, a practice in agro and food supply chain, divisional chief executive, ITC agri business division S Sivakumar said, “Though the E-Choupal practice has its presence across 40,000 villages in the country, it is not on a satisfactory level. Basic flaws exist. Yet, as the purchase is made from the farmers directly, the product identity is preserved through the chain.” He called upon BCIC to plan for implementing the E-Choupal practice in Karnataka as well.
Meanwhile, when asked about further expansion plans, Sivakumar said that the next venture was a “ Choupal Fresh” for fruits and vegetables. “We have already started this as a pilot project in Hyderabad,” he said.
Regional technology director, Hindustan Unilever Limited, Dr Rinka Banerjee and head of Food Bazaar, Future Group, Dupindera Sandhu presented a paper on the best practices in food pocessing and manufacturing.

Higher consumption levels in packaging, building and construction, automotive and consumer durable sectors, besides normal consumption in electrical, transport and other industrial sectors, will contribute to the growth of the industry in India.

Andhra Hosts AAPI’s 5th Indo-U.S. Healthcare Summit

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy has said the state would consider making sports compulsory for children in schools as a means of preventing lifestyle diseases.

Inaugurating the fifth Indo-U.S. Healthcare Summit of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin Jan. 3, he expressed concern over the lack of physical activity among children and their preference for junk food. Both the discipline and dedication that get inculcated through sports activities were missing among today's children, he said.

Making sports compulsory would ensure physical fitness and prevent early onset of diseases, he added.

Admitting that Andhra Pradesh had the highest infant and maternal mortality rates among the southern states, he said 4,000 nutrition and day care centers were started in the state as against the total requirement of 38,000. There was a reduction in IMR and MMR wherever the centers were started, he added.

Reddy said the government was laying a lot of stress on education and health and added that that through the Aarogyasri scheme, the costs for 400 different surgeries were being covered for the Below Poverty Line families. The government was spending Rs.1000 crore each year under the scheme and 1.3 million surgeries had been performed so far.

Health Minister Dr. D.L. Ravindra Reddy sought the cooperation of AAPI in combating infant mortality rates, maternal mortality rates, non-communicable and vector-borne diseases, both in rural and urban areas in the state. He said that 56 percent of the women in the state were anemic, which was leading to higher maternal and infant mortality rates.

Both the center and the state government were taking several measures to reduce IMR and MMR, including creation of infrastructure and neonatal facilities.

AAPI president Sunita Kanumury said AAPI would collaborate with the state government on maternal and child health issues as well as in overcoming the challenges posed by diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases.

AAPI emergency medical care experts were also training doctors here in emergency medical services, the Indian American physician said.

Kanumury said the organization had launched its fifth edition of the Indo-U.S. Healthcare Summit to strengthen existing initiatives, and have made some bold moves by launching its AAPI-Telemedicine Network across 17 AAPI-sponsored clinics in India with the international “We Serve” Foundation, a U.S.-based charitable organization, and I-Grandee Software Technologies in Mumbai.

“We have enormous challenges of healthcare globally such as heart disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, cancer, maternal and infant health, and mental health, nutritional and infectious diseases. Addressing this problem constitutes one of the greatest challenges of our times and failure to do so properly will have dire consequences on our economy and social fabrics,” she said in a press release.

We have some successes, particularly in maternal and child health, which is an outstanding example of public and private partnerships with support of people that are passionate about the cause, said Kanamury. The other is the Sewak project, a great example in Gujarat of helping to identify and manage people with diabetes in rural areas. There are several other examples of individuals working and volunteering their time and resources in helping India, she said.

AAPI is collaborating with ECFMG and had invited Dr. Steven Seeling to help Indian medical graduates learn how to navigate the American healthcare system.

The Continuing Medical Education program was a big hit at the summit. Dr. Guruva Reddy, managing director of Sunshine Hospitals, Hyderabad, inaugurated the series with a lecture on advances in orthopedics. Dr. Suresh Reddy presented a lecture on endovascular management of ruptured intracranial aneurysms while Dr. Sunita Dhawlikar spoke on pain management options for back pain.

The American Consul General in Hyderabad, Katherine Dhanani, was the guest of honor on the third day of the deliberations.

Dr. Ramesh Mehta, secretary-general of the Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, said there are clear signs of a reverse brain drain as one-fourth of 40,000 doctors of Indian origin in the UK’s National Health Services were going to retire soon.

Recently, Kelly Services, which tracks human resources movement trends across the globe, estimated that about 300,000 Indian professionals (cutting across different streams) are likely to come back in the next five years.

“New generation doctors are not finding jobs because of recession. They are looking at India jobs. New colleges and institutes are coming up here and they might need experienced people. Those who aspire for the best positions and not getting them too are trying to come back,” Mehta said.

On the other hand, India desperately needs doctors.

“It is short of 600,000 doctors and 10,000 nurses,” Mehta said, pointing out that any reverse drain of doctors would quite be handy for India.

Indian doctors abroad are not in small in numbers. As many as 500,000 doctors have made foreign countries abroad their home. Dominated by the U.S. with over 100,000 in the U.S., geographies where Indian doctors have settled in significant numbers include the UK, Australia and New Zealand, said Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, chairman of the Apollo group of hospitals.

GAPIO is an umbrella body of associations of Indian origin doctors in several countries. Reddy and Mehta offered initiatives that GAPIO and its constituents might start to better medical education and healthcare services in India. Dr. Sanku Rao, former AAPI president and its current trustee, is the vice chair of GAPIO.

Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Information Technology, Communications and Endowments, presented honors to physicians and others who helped the summit.

Noted Bharatanatyam dancer Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala and her Kala Pradarshini troupe presented a dance program “A Tribute to Ghantasala” to the songs of the legendary singer.
