City to host world agri congress in Nov ’13
HYDERABAD: The state will host the world agriculture congress (WAC) in the city in November 2013. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy gave a positive reply to a proposal from the world agricultural forum (WAF), when the board's chairman and former prime minister of New Zealand, James B Bolger, wrote to him some time back about the board's decision to hold the WAC in AP as the state has a strong agricultural tradition. This is for the first time that WAC is going to be held in India.

According to Aldas Janaiah of Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University ( Angrau), who is also a member of the board of world agricultural forum, the theme for WAC - 2013 is "Re-shaping agriculture for the benefit of small and marginal farmers". The session, which will attract around 600 delegates, including politicians, administrators, academicians, CEOs, farmers, and functionaries of development organisations, among others, will discuss with all key stakeholders on how to re-shape and re-position small-farm agriculture in order to make farming economically viable and improve farmers' income.

WAC-2013 is also expected to provide a policy direction to the developing countries on how to re-shape agricultural policy in order to make farming viable and attractive as a profession, based on sharing of inter-country experiences.

An organising committee under the chairmanship of the chief minister will be set up soon. James B Bolger will be the co-chairman.

Hyderabad likely to host Metropolis Congress

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/hyderabad...05-60-121.html

Hyderabad’s love affair with hosting international summits is set to continue well into 2014, as a delegation from The Metropolis (a consortium of metropolitan cities across the world) on Monday met Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain to discuss plans to conduct the triennial Metropolis Congress in 2014 in Hyderabad.

The Mayor promised all cooperation from the GHMC for the same. Talking on the sidelines of the hurriedly-convened press meet, Alain Le Saux, Secretary General of the The Metropolis, said that the event would focus only on municipal and urban development issues and not any general topics. He stressed that Hyderabad had excellent infrastructure and urban facilities in place, which had helped it nudge out Bangalore in the final list as the host city.
When asked about any kind of monetary support which would be provided for organising of the event, he said all infrastructural expenses for the mega, multi -country event would have to be borne by the GHMC. “We help in global level advertisements and promotion activities. At the city and local level, GHMC will be undertaking the development works,” he said.
Presently seven Indian cities are part of The Metropolis. The Congress aims to study and exchange ideas on the existing sanitation, roads, energy, water, transport and solid waste management systems being practised in cities across the world.

Hyderabad to host national meet on diet

Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/12615866.cms

Quote:
HYDERABAD: A national conference on 'Indian diets and health' will be organised at the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) here from November 29 to December 1, 2012. The conference is being organised as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of Indian Dietetic Association (IDA).

NIN director B Sesikeran and Dr Bhaskara Chary, national vice-president of IDA, informed that the theme of the conference would be "Indian diets and health: in retrospect and prospect" and to approach the theme in a multi-disciplinary way. Sessions would be organised on various aspects like social, cultural, and economic determinants of Indian diets, they said.

Health aspects of Indian diets, historically from traditional Indian medicine to contemporary science will be explored. A holistic perspective will be taken to explore how diets in various regions have changed from time to time and what prompted them in terms of policy, science, affordability and globalisation.

The national conference would be organised by the Andhra Pradesh chapter of IDA, in association with NIN. Dieticians, nutritionists, researchers, scientists, students, teachers and representatives of the industry are expected to participate in the national conference.

NIN director Sesikeran pointed out that the IDA was formed in 1962 as a result of the efforts of NIN former director Gopalan and Dr Kalyan Bagchi, another luminary in the field.

In the context of the paradox that India is facing today with undernutrition and obesity among the population, Sesikeran said he favoured the formation of a nutrition and dietetic council to look into such issues. This, he said, should be on the lines of the Medical Council of India to regulate and establish standards for dieticians across the country. A formal proposal would be sent to the Government of India after the IDA national conference and based on the papers presented during the conference.

Meet to focus on misleading ads

Source: http://www.deccanherald.com/content/...ading-ads.html

Quote:
The need for stringent legislation to curb the misleading advertisements published by food products manufacturers and establishment of the Dietetic Council of India will top the agenda of a national conference on “Indian diets and health” to be held in Hyderabad in November this year.

Of late, several advertisements making tall claims about certain food products have been found to be lacking scientific basis. For instance, some have claimed that their health drinks will improve the memory power of children and help them grow taller.

“The Centre is considering introduction of legislation on Food Safety and Standards to curb such claims,” Director of Hyderabad-based National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) Dr B Sesikeran said. The nutrition experts from across the country will gather here for the national conference.

The 11th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity will be held in Hyderabad in October 2012. About 15,000 delegates from 193 member countries are expected to participate. Because of the importance of this conference for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, the event is popularly termed “Global Biodiversity Summit”. In preparation for this important conference, it will be useful to take the following steps.

n Launch a gene care movement: India is a biodiversity rich country. Valuable genetic resources occur in a wide ra*nge of crops and farm animals and such economically valuable biodiversity is referred to as agro-biodiversity. Unfortunately, there is a serious loss of genetic diversity caused by habitat destruction, invasive alien species and changing agricultural practices. There is, therefore, need for greater efforts in spreading biodiversity literacy. Soil erosion is visible to the naked eye, while gene erosion is not. As a result, there is much less understanding of the fact that the loss of every gene and species limits our options for the future. This will be particularly unfortunate in the context of the emerging changes in temperature, precipitation and sea level as a result of global warming. We should, therefore, la*unch a gene care movement with the active participation of educational institutions and local bodies. I would suggest such a gene care movement, designed for saving and sharing genetic wealth, may be launched on June 5, 2012, which is commemorated as World Environment Day. The focal theme for this year’s World Environment Day is “Green Economy: Does it Include You?” A gene care movement launched by elected local bodies and civil society organisations will help to make the programme inclusive.

n The National Biodiversity Act 2002: This Act provides for biodiversity management at three levels, namely, local body-level biodiversity management committee, State Biodiversity Bo*ard and National Biodiversity Authority (NBA). NBA exists with its headquarters in Chennai, while 26 State Biodiversity Boards have also been established. However, panchayat-level Biodiversity Management Committees have been established only in 32,796 local bodies. Kerala and Madhya Pr*adesh are leaders in operationalising Biodiversity Management Committees. Under the Biodiversity Act, the local committees are empowered to give prior informed consent for the collection of genetic resources in their area and for benefit-sharing agreements. Biodiversity Management Co*mmittees can also declare ‘Sacred Groves’ and other areas of conservation as heritage sites, to be preserved for posterity in their pristine purity. India has been a leader in getting provisions relating to benefit sharing and prior informed consent incorporated both in the Global Biodiversity Convention and in the FAO Treaty on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. No further time should be lost in empowering all local bodies with Biodiversity Management Committees.

n Gene banks for a warming planet: Climate change will create new situations in agriculture. There could be more frequent drought and floods. Along the coast, there could be a rise in sea level. Anticipatory research and action are needed for checkmating the adverse impact of such changes. Fortunately, in nature, there is considerable genetic diversity in relation to the adaptation of crop varieties and farm animals to changes in climate and monsoon behaviour. For example, there are genes for flood and drought tolerance. Deep-water rice varieties will be important for the flood-prone areas of the Indo-Gangetic Plains. Similarly, drought tolerance will be needed particularly in unirrigated areas, which account for 60 per cent of our cultivated area. With access to food becoming a legal right under the National Food Security Act, it will be necessary to prevent violent fluctuations in food production and also avoid a high degree of price volatility.

Along the coast, we will ne*ed both trees like mangroves that can provide some protection against coastal storms and tsunamis, as well as salinity tolerant plants known botanically as halophytes. Mangroves provide genes for salt-water tolerance and it is now possible to transfer them to rice and other crops grown in coastal areas. In all areas where there is possibility of adverse weather conditions, we should develop gene banks for maintaining genetic material that can help farm families to overcome the problems arising from extreme weather events.

n Gene banks for combating malnutrition: The Prime Mi*nister’s Nutrition Advisory Council has identified 200 high-burden districts with reference to the prevalence of both child and adult malnutrition. The malnutrition bu*rden prevailing in our country is well known. However, despite a number of social protection measures introduced so far, such as the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS), school noon meal programme, and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Progr*amme (MGNREGA), the ma*lnutrition figures are remaining stubbornly high.

The most important source of livelihood in the 200 high-burden districts is agriculture comprising crop and animal husbandry, fisheries, agro-fo*restry and agro-processing. According to the Economic Survey 2012 of India, the contribution of agriculture to GDP has gone down to below 14 per cent. However, this sector continues to provide most of the employment opportunities in villages. Thus, there is a gradual impoverishment of the ru*ral sector. The proposed National Food Security Bill may to some extent enlarge economic access to food. The problem of achieving sustainable nutrition security, which involves physical, economic and social access to balanced diet (both the ne*eded calories and micronutrients like iron, iodine, zinc, vitamin A and vitamin B12), will still remain since the Food Security Bill will only ensure that most of our population will be able to get the needed calories in the form of wheat, rice and nutri-millets like ragi, bajra and madua, among others.

The fourth edition of the Indo-Global Education Summit 2012 will be held at Hyderabad from September 6. The main purpose behind the summit is to foster research and academic collaborations, promote universal equitable access to education, and to make India an economic competitor in the global market.

“The Indian economy is transforming into an international powerhouse, which requires India to have the best possible educational opportunities. We are seeking meaningful collaborations for making values to exchange undergraduate programmes, to access global knowledge etc,” said CD Arha, chairman, the Indus Foundation. The collaborations will mainly work towards tackling global issues like global warming.

Our current education system is capable to educate only 10 per cent of the country’s 1.3 billion population.
“Andhra Pradesh alone requires around 30 universities to meet the current level of demand. We should first strengthen our state universities to gain more benefits from these global educational partnerships,” said AR Reddy, vice-chancellor of Yogi Vemana University.

The Indo-Global Summit will see the participation of top 200 foreign universities and over 1,000 Indian universities.

More than 180 delegates and students took part in the event

The conference was jointly organised by AMEN and HOSPACCX India Systems, which witnessed eminent speakers from across the country, who shared their experiences and knowledge on hospital architecture. More than 180 delegates and students took part in the event.

He mentioned that besides the conventional bank loan model, and the recent infavour private equity and the venture capital route, there are other options like structured finance which acts as quasi equity and quasi debt at a higher cost. Each option has its own pros and cons and a good decision could only be taken based on your existing financial and leverage position of the company. Singh was speaking on the Topic - Healthcare Financing - Planning for Growth.

Hyderabad: Standardising breast healthcare and establishing breast surgery as a subspecialty in India are the major goals which will be discussed at the international meeting of breast surgeons from India and abroad to be held in the city this month.

Along with world renowned breast cancer specialists , around 250 surgeons and multidisciplinary professionals involved in the management of breast cancer will be attending the event which is to be held here from May 18 to 20.

The event is the first of its kind initiative in the country and is being organised by Association of Breast Surgeons in India (ABSI) along with the European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists ( EUSOMA).

The theme for the international congress is 'Breast healthcare in India - time for a paradigm change' . The three-day long programme comprises discussions and debates on several topics like best practices, latest advancements in science of breast surgery, best treatment guidelines, improving the management of benign breast disease in India, importance of specialist breast healthcare centres and importance of early detection .

The programme will begin with a dedicated advocacy session on the importance of counselling breast cancer patients led by classical dancer and breast cancer survivor Ananda Shankar Jayant on May 18.

Dr P Raghuram, founding honorary secretary of ABSI, said the event will be both unique and helpful as it would sensitise the participants on the need for counselling while dealing with breast cancer cases, an area so far neglected.

By hosting the event in Hyderabad, “India will be presiding over all the activities of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) all over the world for the next two years from Oct 2012,” Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, Executive Secretary, CBD Secretariat, said here.

Around 10,000 delegates including ministers, experts and scientists from 193 countries are expected to participate.

Speaking at a function to mark the “International Day for Biological Diversity” on Tuesday, organised by the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), Dias said COP will give the country an opportunity “to bring its experience and leadership role on to the international arena for eco-protection and sustainable development.”

Listing key issues to be discussed at COP-11, Dias said: “We don’t know much about the biodiversity of the ocean.”
