The magnificent Mahindra Satyam auditorium in the pearl city of Hyderabad was the venue of the 24th AIMS Annual Management Education Convention, held on Aug 25-27, 2012. The theme of the convention was 'Innovative Management Education for Sustainable Deve

We need innovation in all facets of MBA education, be it marketing, faculty development, program delivery or placements. We need to leverage technology, and build alliance to survive and thrive.

Inaugurating the program, Mr GM Rao, Chairman, GMR Group said, Indian market is complex. Our challenges are unique. We need to innovate to find our solutions. GMR group has grown by taking the risks, and focusing on execution. Asking the management education fraternity to create programs for Indian challenges, and opportunities, Rao said, A lot of businesses in India are family owned, and family managed. The needs of family business management need to be researched in greater detail by B-schools. B-schools must then offer customized programs in family business management.

Taking about the summit theme, AIMS president Prof Masood Ahmed said, Sustainable economic and social development is the key challenge facing India and the world. B-schools have to prepare leaders that create the right strategies for a sustainable planet. Indian Management education will have to innovate to create strategies for future sustainable development.

Ajit Rangnekar, Dean, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, questioned the current paradigm of management education, and called for a fresh approach. Why are majority of our MBA students in top B-school male, and engineers? We are not attracting, or are mistakenly rejecting, the larger pool of MBA students. Diversity of a class in important for innovation. We also need to leverage education technology fully to reach a much larger base, said Rangnekar.

Dr Sekhar Chauduri, Director, IIM Kolkatta offered an innovative model of faculty development for management schools. He said that absence of faculty is the biggest constraint, and we must create a rigorous faculty development program at IIMs that admits working executives and also management educators, and retrains them to the highest standards.

Dr Ashok Joshi, Director, IndSearch, Pune highlighted the challenges facing B-schools, when he said, According to the recent MBAUniverse.com research, only 21 percent MBAs are employable. This is alarming. As a result, a lot of B-schools are facing a shortfall in student intake, and are on the verge of closure. We need to revisit of assumptions and approaches.

Day 3 of the convention will be addressed by Dr Pritam Singh, Director General, IMI, New Delhi.

Summing up the deliberations, Prof Srinivas Acharya, AIMS convention director, said, We need innovation in all facets of MBA education, be it marketing, faculty development, program delivery or placements. We need to leverage technology, and build alliance to survive and thrive.

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 9:
Yuan LongPing from China, considered the father of hybrid rice, will be the star speaker among 400 delegates from 30 countries, who are expected to take part in the 6th international hybrid rice symposium in Hyderabad. The three-day symposium beginning on Monday, will take stock of the progress in hybrid rice, especially research, seed production and progress made in different countries. China is the first country to develop and commercialise the hybrid rice technology.

HYBRID VARIETIES

More than 50 per cent of rice area is under hybrid varieties. India is the second nation to develop its own hybrid rice and adopt it on a commercial scale.

At present, there are 59 rice hybrids that cover an estimated area of two million hectares. These are grown in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Assam. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Directorate of Rice Research, and the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines, will organise the global meet. It is being held for the second time in Hyderabad.

The event will be inaugurated by the Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister, Kanna Lakshminarayana. AP has emerged as the hybrid rice seed capital of the country, with more than 85 per cent of seed produced in Warangal and Karimnagar districts, according to a press release from the Directorate of Rice.

India produces 103 million tonnes of rice from 44 million hectares. It is the second largest producer after China. However, the challenge is to produce 1.5 to 2 million tonnes of additional rice annually, to feed the growing population in the next 15 to 20 years. The conference will focus on hybrid rice research and development in several countries and its role in achieving food security, said B.C. Viraktamath, Director of the Directorate of Rice Reserach. The international rice hybrid symposia is being held once in four years.

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 10:
Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) is in the process of establishing a National Hybrid Rice Consortium to bring all stakeholders onto a common platform to share research knowledge and put it to use in order to build the hybrid rice ecosystem.

ICAR has held several rounds of consultation meetings with public agencies and private firms on the need and on the framework for such a consortium.

We have appointed a committee to come out with terms of reference for the consortium. We will share them with all the stakeholders and after considering the feedback we will announce the launch of the consortium, Swapan K. Datta, Deputy Director-General of ICAR, told Business Line on the sidelines of the sixth international Hybrid Rice Symposium here on Monday.

In all likelihood, the consortium will be formed in a month. Private firms will pay a membership (about Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh). Government universities and research agencies will get membership free of charge.

The stakeholders will bring in their research output to the platform.

Those interested can use them after paying a certain amount. The consortium would maintain a database of the research knowledge and its authors. This is to keep tabs on the unauthorised use of the material or inventions, he said.

Initially, the consortium will take care of the hybrid rice. We are planning to extend this to other crops as well in the future, the ICAR official said.

After working for years, some scientists and research bodies discard certain lines. They dont use them any longer. They can bring such research updates to the platform. We will give the receivers non-exclusive rights, he said.
