Predict Chicago's 2010 population

Block-level statistics from the 2010 Census will be coming out soon. So let's see who does best at predicting how the city has changed. Post your prediction for the total population of Chicago.

For bonus points, predict the total residential population in the Central Planning Area (roughly bounded by North Ave, Halsted, Kinzie, Paulina, Polk, I-94, 18th, Canal, I-55, in which the 2000 population was 111,742).

I'll go with
Chicago 2,821,888
Central Planning Area 166,888

If I'm right, do I win anything?

What a weird boundary. I wouldn't include anything south of the Ike or west of Clark, with the exception of the LaSalle Park area and the handful of buildings near the Greyhound station. In the West Loop, Paulina's way too far west. Even Ogden seems too far, but it's better. Maybe Throop? It's a pretty clear dividing line between hardcore dense Chicagoan warehouse district and Modernist Corbusian fantasyland.

On the north side, I'd omit everything north of Division, too.

That is usually how it works ala the Price is right. But if DT is closer in population in pure numbers I would accept him as a clear winner. I just thought that the numerbers were to come out soon and be lower that what TUP expects. So therefore I took an inteligent bet hoping that there were few if any other guesses.

Plus great minds think alike. In the recient past we have posted the exact same article and bolded almost the same parts of the story miniutes apart on several occasions. TUP to me is my kindred soul.

I have defended him on numerous , within the intertubes and on other occasions and he has had my back likewise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't the official 2010 census data been released? When are these block level statistics being released?

Redistricting (block-level population) data was just released last week for Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey and Virginia; Arkansas, Iowa, Indiana and Maryland should be out this week.

I presume it's released as the statistical work and cross-checking is completed.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TUESDAY, FEB. 15, 2011

U.S. Census Bureau Delivers Illinois' 2010 Census Population Totals

The U.S. Census Bureau today released more detailed 2010 Census population totals and demographic characteristics to the governor and leadership of the state legislature in Illinois. These data provide the first look at population counts for small areas and race, Hispanic origin, voting age and housing unit data released from the 2010 Census.

The official 2010 Census Redistricting Data Summary File can be used to redraw federal, state and local legislative districts under Public Law 94-171. The census data are used by state officials to realign congressional and state legislative districts in their states, taking into account population shifts since the 2000 Census.

Data for Illinois show that the five most populous incorporated places and their 2010 Census counts are Chicago, 2,695,598; Aurora, 197,899; Rockford, 152,871; Joliet, 147,433; and Naperville, 141,853. Chicago decreased by 6.9 percent since the 2000 Census. Aurora grew by 38.4 percent, Rockford grew by 1.8 percent, Joliet grew by 38.8 percent, and Naperville grew by 10.5 percent.

The largest county is Cook with a population of 5,194,675. Its population decreased by 3.4 percent since 2000. The other counties in the top five include DuPage, with a population of 916,924 (increase of 1.4 percent); Lake, 703,462 (increase of 9.2 percent); Will, 677,560 (increase of 34.9 percent); and Kane, 515,269 (increase of 27.5 percent).

That's what I was thinking! Yikes -- so we are losing people!?!? Not what I wanted to hear, especially since I've been bragging on about Chicago recently to some friends who were visiting from Dallas and Houston - in regards to their comments about population growth. Damn

I heard on the radio that the population of whites and asians increased, hispanics stayed about the same and the blacks lost numbers big time.
