I haven't seen Barista vacant at any point of time. No idea, why they left?

I believe one issue of Barista is, it lack the much needed privacy a cafe requires. Its too open and I think the basic format of Barista is much like that.... I have seen one in Abu Dhabi Al Wadha Mall, which looked almost a clone of Kochi one.

In UAE, its okay, as its primarily businessmen who patronage such cafes discussing business and other matters.... In India, particularly Kerala, cafes are primary hang-outs for youngsters, particularly love-making couples.... They require some privacy, like the way CCD or Coffee Beanz offers....

I have seen most of the time, people in Barista are young professionals or tourists, who are not loyal customers as youngsters like CCD..... And the rates are too high... I believe it may contributed to its early death....

Heard, they are returning back in Grand Souk.... If so, its going to be good!!!

Several New cafes are coming up in the city..... Its almost a coffee revolution.

The latest one will be Kahawa Kochi, founded by a group of young dynamic entrepreneurs...... The Kahawa Kochi will be Kerala's first full scale large sports cafe with live screening of national and international soccer matches in its Soccer room. Other screens also will telecast other major sporting tournaments.

The cafe will be a fusion cafe, with a Book cafe along with its sports cafe. The company has tied up one of city's largest new gen Book cafe partners- The Readers Web which also will set up live E-library facility, accessible via all Smartphones as well as laptops thro' complimentary wifi.

The cafe will be also one of the late night cafes operating till 1:30 AM daily.

Coming soon- Restaurant Grading

In what could be an extremely useful service for foodies in the city, the Kochi Corporation is planning to introduce a grading system for restaurants. This is also a rather encouraging move to urge city restaurants to clean up their act and make sure they serve food prepared in hygienic conditions.

According to a top official of the Health Standing Committee, the grading system will help the civic body to identify the best restaurants that offer quality food.

Those that are identified as the best will be given certificates by the Corporation. As per the new system, the restaurants will be graded ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’. The criteria for grading includes quality of food served, hygiene condition of the kitchen and premises, purity of drinking water, suitability of water used for cooking and efficiency in customer service.

“The officials of the Health Department of the Corporation and the Health Standing Committee members have discussed the plan to introduce the new system. The proposal will be put up at the Corporation council meeting and the system will be introduced once it gets the Council’s nod,” said Kochi Corporation Health Standing Committee chairman T K Ashraf.

“The best restaurants will be given certificates of recogonition and the owners will be honoured by the corporation,” added Ashraf. In the new system, grade ‘A’ indicates that the restaurant has not violated any norms set by the Health Department and meets quality expectations. Grades ‘B’ and ‘C’ will be given to those making minimal violations. However, any grade lower than ‘C’ would indicate that the restaurant has shown disregard for the guidelines, and could even be asked to close down.

Ashraf said that the civic body hopes that the new grading system will reduce the risk of food contamination. Also, the Health Department will conduct regular inspections wherein grades will be given, and be subject to revision based on results from these surprise raids.

Malayaali, mohammedirshad06,

Guys, in addition to restaurant locations can you also post some actual food pictures? That would be wonderful.

Thanks for your efforts though!
