Barista is closed in Bay Pride Mall, during my last visit to Kochi in December. I heard, they are going to open back in Lulu Mall and one in Infopark soon. I have no more details, as I got this from a person who was working there when I went there.

You guys are doing an incredible job here...out of all i find these info very useful. Its a confusing thing when ever a senior official visiting Cochin. Ample trouble always, I normally end up taking them to Presidency, Gokulam park inn, Grand Hotel, Abad and Avenue Regent etc. Normally I miss out these options, or to be frank some of them not even known to me. People always prefer something different and unique, So this is absolutely a blessing.

Thanks to Mr. Dileep, Malayali, agnath for their valuable contribution and comments.

I wish if somebody could share info about the best and famous seafood restaurants also.

Cocoa Tree Opens at Panampilly Nagar

Quote:
Cocoa Tree has opened at The Centre Hotel, Panampilly Nagar. Though slightly less spacious than the one at Avenue Regent, m’ pretty sure that aint gonna come in any of our way to hit this place and try out the lip smacking delicacies they always had to offer.

I personally liked Grand Pavilion of Grand Hotel... Their seafood specialties I like very much.

Lumiere Restaurant in Panampally Nagar is also equally good. They promote themselves as seafood hub....

Kochi's first Fusion restaurant.....

A red plate with sketches of three women, of different nationalities – Indian, Chinese and Thai….an ad like that is a sure fire recipe to arouse curiosity. And the restaurant is called ‘Nilgiri', the only one way to find out what the connection is to go there.

Gokulam Park's latest restaurant is an experiment which is sure tol succeed, says T. G. Rajesh, executive chef Gokulam Park. The food at ‘Nilgiri', according to Rajesh, is an ‘attempt' at fusing elements of Oriental cuisines or foods in ways that would enhance the eating out experience. The restaurant has a contemporary minimalist décor in shades of grey, maroon and beige, with a live kitchen (behind a glass wall) where you can see chefs bustling about getting food ready.

All talk about food induces ravenous hunger. So out comes the food. “Two years of ‘research' has gone into the final menu”, says Rajesh, and the chef-in-charge of the restaurant, Gopal, vigorously nods his head in agreement. By research, Rajesh means planning a menu that is balanced – meat, carbohydrate ratio etc. Different combinations and permutations (right down to presentation) were tried out to zero in on the final menu.

East meets East

Famished would be an understatement of the state of hunger, so we start with the starters - crumb-fried chicken winglets (the non-veg option) and vegetable tempura. You will get only one starter, though! Rajesh lets in on a secret; crumb fried is an adaptation of Goan ‘rawa fried'. The winglets are crisp and crunchy, goes well with the tangy mint chutney. East meets West, in a manner. The mint chutney comes in a dip bowl carved out of a tomato, Rajesh says presentation is important. The tempura was served with spicy mayonnaise dip; again crisp and crunchy, just right.

The portion is just right for two people with ‘reasonable' appetite. The starters were followed by chicken dumpling soup; a kind of East meets Far East kind of fusion. Spicy soup with tiny balls of chicken, not so much dumplings. A very forgettable pineapple tadka salad appeared before the main course - slivers of pineapple with a tempering of red chilli, mustard seeds and coconut…avoidable.

All was forgotten with the arrival of the lamb shammi kebab served with walnut and peas, fried rice and home style lamb curry platter (Rs. 350 plus taxes) arrived. There was a generous portion of fried rice, lamb curry and four moderately medium-sized kebabs. The generous portion of fried rice was, well, fried rice with a crunch (of walnuts). The lamb curry was spicy, it offset the fried rice and makes for a good combination. Then there are the moderately-medium sized, spicy-fiery kebabs, Rajesh and his team have upped the spice quotient but in a nice way. This was clearly a comfort platter, very conservative on the oil factor and there was no repetition of flavours.

Combinations

The platter is a stylised, modern cousin of the ‘thali' meal. Only that there is a predominant dish around, which the accompanying two are ‘constructed' in order to complement it. The principle appears to have been inspired by sizzlers, where there is the sizzler and then the others to go with it.

The combinations for the platter are many. Just so that you get an idea of the kind of fusion attempted - spicy grilled fish (served with stir fried seafood and ‘lacha paratha'), curried pearl spot in tandoor (served with clams and ginger noodles), ‘chatpata' chicken (served with spinach and chicken fried rice with quick fried beans) paneer masala dosa (served with veg ‘makhni' and tomato salsa) or classic beef coconut fry (served with Thai fried rice and curried rice dumplings)…get the drift?

That's the kind of fusion Rajesh is talking about. “This is not like making biriyani with rice used to make risotto. The processes have been fused,” he offers as explanation to the purists.

Although you don't have to pay extra for the starter, salad and soup,, you have to pay for the dessert. That is, if you have the space for dessert after the main course, it has to be underlined that all this only if you are a reasonable eater without a humungous appetite. The desserts have exotic names – Misty Creamy (which is chilled ‘payasam') or blueberry rice pancakes (rice pancakes filled with mascarpone cheese and blue berry) to name a few. For those who like their desserts conventional, negotiating something like the blueberry rice pancakes would be tough.

Nilgiri is definitely worth a try. The restaurant is open only for dinner from 7. 00 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Cochin Bakery opens second outlet in Dubai
Quote:
Cochin Bakery (CeeBees), the leading Indian confectioner with a track-record of nearly 75 years, has strengthened its expansion plans for the Gulf region with the opening of its second outlet in the UAE in Karama, Dubai.

The spacious second showroom is located in Al Maskan Building behind the Emarat petrol station, in Karama, and it follows the opening of the first international outlet of Cochin Bakery in the UAE in Al Ghusais in November, 2010.

The new outlet will feature a delectable spread of over 500 varieties of delicacies including cakes, biscuits, scones, puffs, pastries and a wide range of traditional savouries from Kerala, the south Indian state renowned for its spices and unique culinary heritage. The Kerala sweet selection includes the CeeBees signature ghee cakes, halwas that are true to the flavours of the famed sweet from Kozhikode, and a range of crispy bites ideal for light meals and as snacks.

Today, Cochin bakery has two outlets in Kochi, as well as in other parts of the state including Kozhikode, Kasargode and in Mangalore, Karnataka. A well-equipped manufacturing plant supports the bakery operations.
