Some trends are almost impossible to miss. But here is one we didn’t see coming — Italian cuisine. George Bernard Shaw once said, “There is no love sincerer than the love for food.” And no country testifies this more than Italy. India’s Italian connection doesn’t just end with Sonia Gandhi. Italian food is now the rage in Kochi.



With more people travelling abroad and becoming more adventurous with respect to exploring new cuisine, and the rise in disposable income, Italian food has carved a niche for itself in the hearts and stomachs of Keralites.

Italian ingredients like balsamic vinegar and pasta crowd many a Kochi kitchen shelf now. With books like ‘Italian Khana’ by Ritu Dalmiya easily available at stores, it is simpler to make yummy Italian food at home. Kochi has been seeing a boom in the number of Italian joints for the past two years, which makes people familiar with the vast variety of Italian dishes.

Benedict P J, manager, Pizza Hut, Gold Souk, says, “Italian pizzas and pastas are among the most popular dishes. Pan pizza is now the hot favourite of
youngsters.”

There is Napoli pizza, Pompeii pizza, Quattro stagioni and Margarita pizza (with just cheese and sauce on it) that Kochi folks are delving into. It’s not just pizzas that stand out among Italian dishes. Pastas like spaghetti, macaroni, ravioli, penne, cannaloni and lasagna sheets are popular, too. Another reason why people prefer Italian food is its wide range of vegetarian options, thanks to the many meatless fasts of the Catholic church.

Italy is also well-known for its coffee, which is arguably the best in the world.
‘Cafe @ Cochin’ at Panampilly Nagar offers the best of Italian coffee. Lavazza, the essence that adds taste to their coffee, is imported from Italy. “We have a whole range of pastas and pizzas as well. Our cakes are also in demand. We mostly see the college-going crowd here. Our ambience is that of a lounge where they can hang out with friends,” says Anthony Sebastian, owner the food joint.

If it’s Italian desserts that you want, turn to Itty’s, Panampilly Nagar. A beautifully constructed bamboo structure which sways gently as you walk, Itty’s offers Italian ice-cream, better known as gelato, which is lower in fat-content than the usual ice-cream. Be sure to try out tiramisu cakes (‘Tiramisu’ means ‘pick me up’ in Italian). A layered combination of coffee, zabagilone cream and chocolate, this one is something the sweet toothed will not give a miss.

Besides these outlets, there is quite a wide variety of restaurants to choose from. ‘14 Avenue’ in Panampilly Nagar offers a full range of Italian dishes. Another preferred destination is ‘24 Carat’ at Gold Souk. ‘Four Seasons’ at Fort Kochi and ‘Cornucopia’ near Ravipuram are also favourite Italian haunts. Of course, international pizzerias ‘Pizza Hut’ and ‘Dominos’ are great alternatives, too.

A reason for the growing popularity of Italian food could be its similarity with the Indian cuisine. If you haven’t yet tried Italian food, now is the time to start, what with the number of options available. After all, as the age-old Spanish proverb goes, the belly rules the mind!

The name itself tells you that the restaurant is Chinese! Being an international branded restaurant, the group has restaurants in Canada, Dubai and India (and as far as Kerala is concerned it is in our very own Kochi!!!). The restaurant offers you with the best Chinese dishes incorporating their Chinese cooking techniques and delicious Indian flavors! In Kerala, Wangs Kitchen is present only in our very own queen of Arabian sea-Kochi as for now. It is located in the New Indian express building, Kaloor.

The ambiance is completely soothing with the blend of sweet music and attractive interior décor! Apart from the other restaurants, before you start with the menu card, sauce-soaked cabbage leaves and mineral water will be provided to you. The menu of Wangs Kitchen provides you with so much variety of delicious dishes in vegetarian and non-vegetarian ends, starters, desserts, soups etc. that even if you are not that much interested in having Chinese food you will become a fan of it after you visit this wonderful place and just have a taste of the delicious and mouth watering Chinese cuisines prepared just for you! Rahmaniya Kethel's Chicken



The famous Kethel Chicken (a patented trademarked chicken like KFC), RKC is one of the oldest chicken fast food of Kerala, based in Trivandrum. Started inside Chalai market, as a small store, the Rahmaniya came to Kochi with a big bang, in a proper large restaurant format in 2007.

Today it entralls Keralites to large way with stores at Kollam, Kozhikode etc.

The Kethel Chicken is very small tender pieces of fried chicken made out of a secret recipe (they claim the spices are exclusively made by them, giving the distintive taste), topped with fresh red chillies.

The restaurant doesnot have any Ala-carte menu, rather a fixed menu comprising of 2 combos

2. Kethel Liver fry

Both are served with 5 pieces of soft chapattis, chicken gravy, salad and fresh lemonade. Guests can choose Ghee Rice instead of Chappattis.

D'Lip Mango Tree

The popular restaurant in Fort Kochi's historic Princess Street. The sea-food specialty restaurant is set in South India's celebrated play-back singer Yesudas's ancestral home, which is now managed by Malayalam film star Dileep under brand of House of Yesudas


The restaurant owned by Dileep, is set around the giant mango tree that grows in center of the house. The Mango tree was planted by Yesudas mother in his childhood days and hence Yesudas was particular to preserve it when the property was handed over for restaurant.

The Mango tree has a decor of tree-top home and reputed for one of the best sea-food restaurant, that attracts large tourists.

Savouring the union of rice and wine

The food festival at Rice Boat, Taj Malabar

Perhaps, Victor Hugo would have loved to be a part of Rice Boat at the Taj Malabar where chefs seem to have fully underscored the Italian proverb — rice is born in water and must die in wine.

The task was to live up to a gourmet of international standards, with a spread of the best of wines and Indian seafood. This was more of a marriage between wine and food. Into the crystalware, flows the wine in all its elegance.

“The recommended wines are Green Point NV Victoria Australia a fresh and delicious sparkling wine, combining rich flavour and superb delicacy, Pouilly Fume, Sauvignon Blanc 2009 Loire Valley, France, a great wine to pair with seafood. Fish and goats cheese too will match wonderfully with this classic sauvignon wine,” says Jayanta Das, Executive Assistant F&B Manager, Taj Malabar.

El Rosal Tarapaca, Pinot Noir 2009 Maipo Valley, Chile, with its juicy red fruit flavours and silky supple tannins, make the wine delectable. Its a fiesta here for the fans of ‘naadan’ kerala food lovers. The Avenue Centre, Panampilly Nagar is hosting a ‘Naadan Thattukada Fest’, which will be on till 4th of july , will be serving some really delicious local kerala cuisines like Kappa Biriyani, Thattu dosa, Poricha kozhiyum chapathiyum etc.



The buffet timings are from eve 7.30 to 11 pm. Along with the non veg items including beef olathiyathu and duck curry, there are also some very tasty vegetarian dishes too. The fest also has some nice deserts and salads in stores too,which can also be a highlight of the food festival.

The restaurant was opened as part of soft launch, made tremendous responses among Kochinites which huge rush for lunch-dinner time. The biriyanis and seafood items are reported to draw more response....

The restaurant is located in Kadavanthara near Vodafone store. Naushad, in an interview mentioned that he is planning to open more NBC branded restaurants in Kochi soon, along with one in Bangalore, Chennai, Trivandrum and Calicut apart from a planned store in Doha soon.

CHILLAX - 24 x 7 - A cafe for the motorbike enthusiast

Chillax is simply the night rider’s choice.

Kochi has finally got its own 24-hour coffee shop. It is fast becoming a preferred getaway for the enthusiastic bike riders and car drifters who love to wade through the bald streets and soak in music.

It’s 2 am as I enter Chillax. The interiors are impressive and the white walls and the wooden floor look beautiful. Seated in a corner was a young couple talking in hushed tones. There is also a middle aged foreigner dozing off.

The wall decor invites you to spend time here, as a feeling of sturdiness rushes past the mind. Well, only the several elegantly-framed photographs of Harley Davidson motorcycles can create feelings of toughness. These bikes are renowned world over for their strength and power. I understood why Chillax is also called by many as a riders cafe.

The theme of the cafe is motorcycles and is dedicated to the spirit of bike riding. The craze for the world renowned Harley Davidson motorcycles is what propelled Kiran, who owns Fatboy and V-Road, two of the most popular models of Harley Davidson Company, to open such an eatery.

So if you are a hardcore biking enthusiast, as you sip a cappuccino, you can check the various books on the history of motorcycles.

As I was finishing up my cold coffee, a tall man came in, sat near me and took out a camera from his bag. He told me that occasionally he loves taking photos of the sleeping city, that he was done for the night and needed some refreshments.

More than just being a coffee shop, this unique place has become a refuge for several people who seeks emancipation from the day’s chaos.
