Sree Krishna Inn

Sreekrishna Inn- Warriam Road

Quote:
As somebody who eats absolutely anything on a plate, this Gallan has got to tell you pretty much about the Sree Krishna Inn at Warriam Road. But before that, if anyone of you reading this haven’t been to this place yet, please don’t wait to finish, please start off to there, have enough of what all you wish to, return, continue reading and then find if whatever told here is true and genuine.

Talking about the place.. Perfectly placed within the city. Design of this house converted restaurant is as inviting as the people inside of it. A true heaven for all the veg lovers. Infact, a heaven for the all as this Gallan, who is not a vegetarian, did love the food there!

Dosas, chaat varieties, north Indian.. The Sree Krishna Inn has a big list of varieties to offer. Of which, the dosas and chaat items would belong to the ‘must try’category. No much idea about the North-Indian offerings. Must be good, but their ‘alu-paratha’ wasn’t much good though.

There are two unique things that are to be noted at this place.. First would be its interiors and the second is the music played there. They have made it a point to keep the homely feel live by arranging some good old furniture sets inside and some beautiful Hinduism themed paintings. The interiors give a soothing feel to ones mood. Instrumental symphonies of classic movie songs played in the background adds to it. A perfect hangout in all sorts. You can feed yourself well, both your tummy and mind.

The ‘Pros’ of this place would be its great ambiance, tasty and healthy food and good number of options to choose from. Its just the pricing that could be put under ‘Cons’ tag. But this Gallan can guarantee that the total experience is worth the money spent there at Sree Krishna.

And if you are this kind of a Gallan who feels “It doesn’t matter to me even if they serve veg food.. As long as the food is good.”, the this place is a must try for you.

Parampara Restaurant- Panampilly Nagar

The ambience of good food
Quote:
Parampara Restaurant in Panampally Nagar has a lot in store for food lovers who enjoy sampling signature dishes. Try out their Vietnamese summer roll, the appetiser, followed by Nasi Goreng - Indonesian sea food fried rice- with beef Penang for an assorted taste of authentic oriental dishes. They are served spicy or non-spicy as per your taste.

Interesting mix

The theme, décor and style of cooking are ‘paramparic', traditional. The interior is spacious and the design rustic and traditional sans frills. The ‘Cudappah' flooring, Plaster of Paris walls with artificial patches here and there, bamboo-like wooden partitions and waiters in Rajasthani ‘prince' coats aim at recreating the ambience of an ethnic tavern. Soft ghazals by Pankaj Udhas in the dimly lit hall creates a mood. The roughly finished tables and elegant chairs, cutlery with brass handles, unusually big mouthed tumblers offer interesting reproductions of ethnic North Indian eateries. Nissam Easukunju, asst. restaurant manager says, “it is our intention to serve everything in accordance with tradition. Though the accent is more on North India, with cooks from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Chhattisgarh , we also serve traditional toddy shop cuisine varieties like ‘meen peera' and ‘vattichathu', squid varuval, chicken stew with noolappam, kappa (tapioca), puttu etc.”

We order a tandoor vegetable starter an assortment of seekh kebab, paneer, pineapple and vegetable skewer and tandoori aloo. The portion was generous for two and the taste different. Starters range from Rs.70 onwards.

Three thalis - all North Indian with parathas- vegetarian (Rs.120) non-veg (Rs.140) and Bengali fish curry thali (Rs.160) are served for lunch.

We tried the Vietnamese summer roll - fresh avocado, cucumber wrapped in steamed cabbage leaf. Our taste buds took time to adjust to this unusual snack.

But then we were there to experiment and explore!

Ajo Vargheese, the chef, said, “our signature dishes are rotis like kurmina-naan coated with cheese and tomato paste, missi roti - bread made with besan flour, kulcha stuffed with spring onions, marthabaq - kheema stuffed parathas.”

In the main course, the choices were many. We opted for the Char Keo Teo- a noodle dish popular in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore consisting of flat rice noodles with sea food, chicken and vegetables and another plate of mix noodles.

While a plate of noodles and fried rice range from Rs.90 to Rs.150, most of the accompaniments - the side dishes do not go beyond Rs. 240. This is quite reasonable for such an elaborate and gracious spread. Meanwhile on scanning the menu some interesting choices catch our attention- Chilli Honey Wings- hot and sweet broiled chicken wings, mutton mulaguthanni soup, beef and mushroom parcel, Thai glass noodles with peanut salad and chengdu chicken.

Food story

Nissam and Ajo went to great lengths to explain and unravel the story behind these creations.

Since no meal would be complete without these ‘after sweets' we scanned the desserts and sweets section to fill that wee bit of space left after the sumptuous meal.

From a list comprising of frozen chocolate and nut pancake, fried ice cream, choco gulab jamun we choose Darsaan as per the chef's recommendation - a dessert of sweetened crispy fried noodles glazed with honey and served with a nice scoop of good old vanilla ice cream. This indeed turned out to be a sweet and lip-smacking finish to a fulfilling meal.

This thread makes me kick my own butt often!!

I am a foodie, but whenever we go out, it is always the same places. Like any married man knows, you hold no rights, only responsibilities in the family so the kids and the lady have the say.

Being middle aged doesn't help. We aren't entitled to enjoy food you see?

Tablez coming in LuLu

Quote:
Tablez Food Company, Emke group’s subsidiary, will open three new high-end restaurants in the UAE and has ambitious growth plans for the UAE, GCC and Indian subcontinent, said Shafeena Yousuf Ali, Chief Executive Officer, after opening the first 5,000 square feet Pepper Mill Restaurant. The group already owns a small restaurant called Bloomsburry’s in Abu Dhabi. “We have big plans in food retail business and our first outlet, Bloomsburry’s, has been quite successful in Abu Dhabi. It is based on a cup-cake-concept with London-based master pastry chef Bea Vo to create the cupcake concept in the Middle East. Pepper Mill is a fine dining Indian restaurant to provide Dubai residents with an exceptional and delectable dishes of the colonial Indian Era,” Shafeena said. She said Tablez flagship stores will first be rolled out in GCC and India - where the group has a dominant presence of Lulu shopping malls, hypermarkets and supermarkets - before taking the brand worldwide. The group enjoys location advantage in different parts of the UAE as the parent company has outlets all across the UAE, GCC and plans to have the biggest retail market in India. “We plan to open De Thale in Abu Dhabi bringing the Thali culture to Abu Dhabi and an Arabic restaurant, Tanjara, offering Iranian, Lebanese and Moroccan food all in a new cultural environment. “We want to be exclusive to Lulu outlets, but in terms of business we are just tenants and buyers of our raw material from the supermarket chain. We also plan to open Catch, a high-end sea food restaurant, in Mushriff Mall, Abu Dhabi. We have many ideas in the food industry and major expansion is planned before 2012,” she said. Along with Lulu Group International, Tablez will expand to India where the group is opening the country’s largest shopping mall — which will have 1.8 million sq. metres of retail space – in Kochi. “The mall is a gateway for Tablez to showcase our concepts into the Indian market. The projects around the GCC include three new malls in Kuwait, three in Oman, two in Saudi Arabia one each in Qatar, Egypt, Yemen and Bahrain,” Shafeena said.

Yesterday I happened to meet a senior official of SFC group in UAE. I am delighted to know that the company is planning to expand its restaurant business into India, particularly Kochi and other parts of Kerala.

SFC Group, which holds franchise rights of Southern Fried Chicken in UAE, which is a major UK fried chicken restaurant group, is in talks with company to gain franchise rights in India. As part of their phase one, the company's own restaurant brands, Pizza Pan and India Palace are planned in India.

I heard the company has already identified the first Pizza Pan store in Kochi and restaurant in a leading Mall. The Pizza Pan store will be upgraded to SFC, once it gets franchise rights.

This part of SFC groups's expansion into India. SFC is owned by a Malayalee, Muralidharan.

Thattil Kutty Dosa in Kochi

Naming a product after it gets popular through a movie, especially in Mollywood, is no news.

Mammootty shirts in the movie Hitler prompted garment manufacturers to launch Hitler shirts in the market. Likewise, the Narasimham dhothis the costume used by Mohanlal in the movie Narasimham was also a big hit.
But, for the first time a food item dosa is being named after a movie and has turned out to be the gourmet's delight. Introducing Salt n' Pepper dosa to the Malayali taste buds is Pai Dosa, thanks to film director Ashiq Abu's new movie Salt n' Pepper.

Just as the movie is faring well in the boxoffice, Pai Dosa on M G Road, Kochi, has got a hit on the menu with the new item. "The recipe is simple. It is a mediumsized dosa priced at Rs 80. The dosa is garnished with layers of masala and homemade chutney powder. It is finally topped with a dash of pepper powder. Of course, quail egg and vegetables are the icing on the dosa," says Sumesh N Pai, of Pai Dosa. Salt 'n Pepper Dosa is the youngest of the dosa family of their shop which already has more than fortyfive varieties of dosa on offer.

"The fact that Malayalis are connoisseurs of food gave us the courage to plan a narrative for Salt n' Pepper with several food items as major players," director Ashiq Abu said. He said that it was Thattil Kutty Dosa which builds up the situation for the protagonist (Lal) of the movie and the heroine (Swetha Menon) to meet.

Even the tagline of the movie is Oru Dosa Undakkiya Kadha (A story born out of a Dosa). "I am glad that our movie has given birth to a new type of dosa," he added. So, while it is one more addition to the 'movie trendsetter,' and as it is a crispy dosa, the latest one is an exception to Manichithrathazhu saree and Harikrishnans churidar!

Mirch Masala

MIRCH MASALA- TD Road, Ernakulam

Plodding down the narrow TD Road in Cochin is not easy; especially when you have to battle with mammoth trucks, impolite auto rickshaws and irksome cyclists. As we wondered if we were on the right track, a rather modest two storied building emerged before us. And there, on an elevated ground floor was Mirch Masala, the North Indian vegetarian restaurant we were seeking. We would have missed the restaurant but for its huge glass front wall.

Inside, the décor is simple and unfussy with basic furniture and an occasional spurt of color, thanks to some Rajasthani figurines. A glass wall separates the kitchen from the dining area and one can watch the chefs at work. The restaurant can seat around 60 guests and there is also a waiting lounge for about 10 persons.

What you get — After being gently ushered to our seats, we were handed the menu. We noticed our much loved North Indian dishes such as the tikkas, dals, sabzis and rotis apart from some Chinese fare for those who can’t compromise on their fried rice and cauliflower manchurian.

We ordered achari paneer tikka as starters with fresh lime soda. Our main course comprised sabz-e-bahar kofta (mixed vegetable koftas), tadka dal, missi roti, aalu parathas and jeera rice.

The panner tikka was absolutely delightful and was served with mint chutney. The koftas were melt-in-the-mouth and the dal had just the right amount of ghee. Jeera rice was just fine. The bright yellow missi rotis made with gram flour and wheat were good, considering that at some places they have been quite a letdown. What we weren’t too impressed with were the aalu parathas. We literally had to search for the potato stuffing! But having said that, the meal was excellent.

The dessert menu is limited to ice creams though we would have been happier to find gajar ka halwa or phirni or at least a kulfi at a North Indian restaurant.

Our verdict — The service is commendable. The staff is friendly and polite and quick to take orders, refill glasses and clear the table. The food arrives quickly. The Paisa Vasool Lunch at Mirch Masala caught our fancy. This one is a North Indian thali that includes two vegetables, dal, two tandoori rotis, rice, pickle, papad, curd, salad, and chutney, all for Rs. 65 for a one-time serve! They also have Special Thali that comes for Rs. 85 and additionally gives you a soup and ice cream of choice. You can also choose any variety of roti with this thali.

We loved the delicious food and the fuss-free ambience at Mirch Masala. Without doubt this is one place we’d want to come back to. Parking space is limited to about three cars though there is sufficient space for two-wheelers. Since Mirch Masala is located on TD Road in Cochin, be prepared to deal with the traffic congestion.

Kochi's own Thattil Kutty Dosas

Salt N Pepper Movie is the recent hit not just for movie goers alone, but also for visitors and foodies of Pai Dosas at Kochi!!!

Guess why? The recent rush at Pai Dosas is for relishing the Thattil Kutty Dosas which used be one of the low-profile item in its menu untill yesterday. Untill yesterday, it was for kids and infants... But no-more today... Youngsters and old all demand for Thattil Kutty Dosa with Garlic Coconut Chutneys as shown in the movie

What is Thattil Kutty Dosa?

Its a typical Mom's recipe as a small palm-sized ghee roasted dosa with a pinch of sugar flavoured on top of it. The dosa got its name as small (Kutty) dosas prepared in Thattu or frying pan....

Pai Dosas was serving this dosa for past 10 years, only to be savored mainly by children. A Rs 38 plate comes with 5 small dosas with 3 chutneys and sambar.

It was accidentially the scriptwriter Shyam who is a regular client in Pai Dosa heard the unique name and decided to use it the movie.

In the end, Pai Dosas got a big boost for their low-profile item.

In addition, Pai Dosas introduced Salt N Pepper Dosas (most of them call that also as Thattil Dosas) which is one of the most expensive in Kochi costing at Rs 80. The S n P dosa comes with 3 layers of different masalas and lavish topping of home chutney powder, toasted in ghee, covered with another dosa, topped with pepper and salt. In addition, an Omlette or toasted vegetables will take a final topping.

These two dosas, are now a raging hit in Kochi.... Thanks to Salt N Pepper... Its an history, a Malayalam movie making a restaurant and its menu to larger hits!!!!

Cochin BBQ

Cochin BBQ- Seaport-Airport Road

Quote:
We are looking hard for a landmark next to which Cochin BBQ, a barbeque joint, is on the Seaport – Airport Road and we dare not blink lest we miss it.

We, as it turned out, were looking for a non-existent landmark. Fortunately Devraj C. Sathyadevan of Cochin BBQ was waiting outside the eatery, and really, there is no missing it. Devraj, it turns out, is a committed foodie. Not just the kind that eats but the kind that likes to feed. Till he opened his eatery, he used to be a techno-commercial consultant and still is one.

He talks about his father's petal soft idlis which are still the best he has eaten, “my father used to grind the dough for the idlis. This is in the pre-grinder/mixer era.” Growing up in a family where it was normal for boys, and when they grew up, men, to potter around the kitchen. “I wouldn't starve. I could make a decent kanji-payar.”

While he was studying engineering in Thrissur, he shared accommodation with five others. Each pair had to take turns on ‘kitchen duty' and later he turned out be the common factor, “I was the ‘consultant'.” Food and cooking seemed to be the leitmotif of his life. He was either preparing the menu or feeding people.

Improvise and cook

During a stint in the Philippines he would have almost a dozen friends over for lunch every Sunday. “It was challenging but it was fun. Everything was different, no spices, herbs, no mobile phones to call mother …nothing. But there was plenty of seafood, chicken and I used to make do with those and improvise and cook up a meal.”

Before relocating to Kochi, he was in Chennai for a decade. There he toyed with the idea of starting an eatery dedicated to Malayali cuisine, “it stayed an idea.” Once back in Kochi, the desire got stronger and he succumbed. But he bided his time. A year was dedicated to research and development. His experiments with food were conducted on his family and friends. And by March this year he opened his own eatery. There were hiccups, but “now we are on track.” He is now looking forward to more outlets.

“I had to get the right marinade. Malayalis do not like their meat bland so I had to improvise and make it healthy too. A year later I got it.” He even fabricated his own barbeque grill and he gets them fabricated for anybody who asks. “There is nothing to be secretive about it. Anybody can do it and if they want to why not?”

Devraj is extremely conscientious for a restaurateur. He refuses to serve foods which he knows are unhealthy. Same goes for processes, which is why he chose barbeque, “less oil, less spices.” Artificial food colours, monosodium glutamate, soda bicarbonate (for meats) etc are strict no nos.

As he talks about spices and marinade I realise that I am hungry. So in comes BBQ combo No. 7 (Rs. 100), which is mathi (sardines) and kappa (tapioca). Why a combo for barbeque? “We are used to the meal concept, so barbeque solo is a no go. People look for something to go with the meat or seafood, so I offer chapathis or khuboos or toasted bread, rice, green chutney, mayonnaise, green salad and gravy.”

Clearly BBQ No. 7 is a Malayali barbeque. There no frills or accompaniments. The tapioca is tasty and spicy perfect for a rainy day and if you love your sardines you will be a convert. Chicken barbeque combo (Rs. 90) was as good as a desi BBQ gets. The spices were all there but in moderation and done well. The chapathis were, surprise, made of wheat flour! “Only those here,” says Devraj. We also sampled his biriyani, it is different from biriyani elsewhere.

Innovation and courage are a sure recipe for job satisfaction, Devraj believes.

Dosas Dosas

The Dosa Fest here now lets you taste North, South and Continental flavours all rolled in to one and that too at an affordable price.

The fest, which will end on Sunday, is conducted by Bharat Tourist Home (BTH) near North End and is truly a fiesta for the taste buds.

Chettinadu dosa, spring roll masala dosa, paneer cheese masala, neer dosa, cucumber dosa are some of the delicacies on offer. The 12 varieties of dosas are good enough to satisfy any gourmet’s palettes.

The chettinadu dosas and the spring roll masala dosas have greater demand and to spice it up, these “redefined masala dosas” are priced between Rs 35 and Rs 45.

An organiser of the fest said, “Masala dosas, which embodies the taste of South, have never ceased to lure people. So, we made an attempt to bring different flavours to it.”

He said different masalas are added for each dosas. “Chettinadu dosa is spicy whereas there are other dosas which are not as spicy. Neer dosa is very thin and it is made of boiled rice.”

To top it off, he said these dosas are served with chutney, sambhar, grated coconuts and jaggery as side dishes.

Sivaprasad, who came with his family to BTH, said he was very happy after relishing the dosas.

“I bought a spring roll masala dosa. I felt as if I was eating fried rice and chilli gopi. It really had a different taste,” he said.

On the prices, Sivaprasd said, “If you want to relish an international cuisine, you have to pay big for it. But at a very affordable price, you can have it here in the form of masala dosa.”

Nisi, a frequent visitor of BTH, said she found the spring roll masala dosa very healthy. “It has vegetables and pulses, which are good for health,” she said.
