SEATTLE - Husky Stadium (72,500 -> 70,500)
College
Washington Huskies 2x Champion: 1960, 1991 Husky Stadium located in Seattle Washington. Home to the Washington Huskies. Facts: -72,500 capacity -Many claim that the first audience wave originated in Husky Stadium on Halloween 1981, at the prompting of Dave Hunter (Husky band trumpet player). -Husky Stadium has the record for the loudest game in college football history. This is in part due to the stadium's design; almost 70 percent of the seats are located between the end zones, covered by cantilevered metal roofs. During televised games, the cameras appear to be shaking due to fans stomping their feet in the bleachers. During the 1992 night game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, ESPN measured the noise level at 135 decibels, well above the threshold of pain. This was the highest decibel level ever recorded for a college football stadium. -One of two stadiums in college where fans can tailgate by boat. AKA Sailgating. -Will begin a 250 million renovation in november 2011. Whats the other stadium you can tailgate by boat?
Whats that builting in the top left of the first photo? The new design looks better having a running track around the field is always ugly. Having a roof other part of the stands makes it look european |

So they're going to rid of the track around the field? Is that track in active use at all anyway?

Also the site of a quite infamous collapse. While under construction, the North stands crumbled to the ground:
![]() http://uwnews.org/uweek/article.aspx?id=39936 Findings were that the contractor had removed supports they thought were temporary but were actually permanent. Bumper stickers were sold that showed the photos of the collapsed stadium with the tagline Gravity:1, Huskies:0

That's because it actually rains enough to require a roof.

The track and field team uses the track so it gets use, but they will build another track and field stadium elsewhere as part of the renovation since they will lose the track.

yup, the track and stadium facility is going to be built to the north in an open area. In the renovation, the lower bowl and south stands will be completely demolished and rebuilt....only thing old will be the north upper stands.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just go play at the Seahawks' Stadium rather than spend gobs of money on this?

Wouldnt it have made sense for the seahawks to play/renovate husky stadium when they had the chance? No, they instead used tax dollars to pay for their stadium. Husky Stadium will be funded by Husky Fans and the Athletic Department. So the argument to move to quest, when huskies have been around much longer, with much more history and tradition, is an absurd argument.

If they wanted to throw in another 80 suites and 5,000 more club seats, additional team facilities, gone to a more neutral color scheme and included more parking in and around campus they probably could have made it work. But everyone wants to feel like they own the building that they are playing in. And the Seahawks might have empty seat to deal with while the Huskies would have a whole mess of empty VIP seats. Sort of the same situation in Minnesota with TCF stadium being not much over a mile from the Metrodome.

Just updated with a new website... www.huskystadium.com There is a cool virtual tour as well as new renderings released via renovation information > multimedia gallery > Image Gallery
Lastly, could a moderator change this thread to construction blog. Construction has already begun with underground utility work. |

It's been done before so it would take a couple New York Minutes to see how badly the University of Minnesota wanted to get back to a college stadium on their own campus (which they did). About the only thing college and pro stadiums have in common is the word "Stadium". Very different products, fan bases, and needs. They usually don't work well together.

1) Alumni like to return to campus to relive their college years. 2) Student bodies are (on the whole) hung over and lazy on Saturday mornings and don't travel across town as easily as one would think. 3) The university would have to pay rent and only get a fraction of the game revenue. |
