The other grandstand will be going up in very short order. In fact, based on the construction schedules I have seen, I believe that whole stadium structure itself should be largely up by the end September. After that, most of the work will be on the non-structural elements of the stadium (cladding, seating, field work, installation of electronics, etc...)

I meant the north upper deck

looks like it won't be included in the renovation

The North stands weren't built all that long ago (1987) compared with the rest of the stadium anyways. Not a big deal if you ask me. That part of the stadium looks totally fine!

Maybe if you're rating within certain size capacities, even then I can think of several 20k+ seat venues around the globe that outstrip the Compass, and I'm not convinced the new Cougars venue will be the king of 40k seaters.

Put another way, if an international friendly were held in Seattle either CenturyLink or Husky could host with equal clout, the same could not be said regarding Reliant and either the Compass or Robertson.
Houston also has the stadium for Rice which is where the Texans almost played their games after the hurricane in 08'. Not a great stadium, but big.

I can't believe within 5 years or so our liberal hipster town could potentially have four world class sports facilities that are each less than 20 years old.

Safeco Field (Mariners) - 1999
CenturyLink Field (Seahawks/Sounders) - 2002
New Husky Stadium (Husky Football) - 2013
Sonics/NHL Arena - 201?

Could any other US city share that claim?
Kansas City has 4... Although 2 were just renovated

Arrowhead Stadium (Chiefs) - renovated a couple years ago
Kauffman Stadium (Royals) - renovated a couple years ago
Sprint Center (hopefully we get an NBA/NHL team soon) - 2007
LiveStrong Sporting Park (Sporting KC) - 2011 (although LSP only has 19k seats but it is a great facility)

DFW has:

Amon Carter(rebuilt 2012)
Cowboys Stadium(2008)
AAC(2001)
Rangers Ballpark(1994)
Cotton Bowl phase II starts after this season meaning the entire stadium will have been gutted, stands added and press and club facilities gutted and rebuilt.

NY metro also comes to mind.

Minneapolis/St Paul is on track for 5 within the next four years, which is good I guess (though not cheap)

Xcel Center (Wild)-2000
TCF Bank Stadium (Gophers Football) -2008
Target Field (Twins) -2009
Target Center (major renovations) Wolves -2014
New Vikings Stadium (Vikings, possible MLS franchise) -2016

I think KC wins on having the newest/best facilities. We could host the big 5 leagues all in stadiums that would be top tier in their leagues.
We also have the Independence events center 2009(minor league hockey, 5,800 seats) and Kansas Speedway- 2001.

I'd take our facilities over KC's though I'd take your soccer stadium. We have several new smaller arenas and TMS is just bigger, badder version of Kansas Speedway.

NYC in the last 5 years (NEW, not renovations)

2 baseball stadiums
1 football stadium
1 basketball arena
1 hockey arena
1 soccer stadium

No other city is even close.

I still prefer the KC stadiums when head to head vs the NY ones but I am biased. You can say they are renovations vs new but KC spent more money renovating them than Pittsburg spent building brand new stadiums.

Not even New York, since the "city" had nothing to do with the football, hockey and soccer venues. "Metro area" tends to work better.

The north upper deck is being renovated...new concessions, restrooms and repainting all the steel from green to a dark charcoal color. South upper deck is going up!

Yeah, I still can't figure out what 360 Architects obsession is with that type of corner. I find it to generally be ugly, the sightlines are not as good as with a rounded corner and it may be a little cheaper than a rounded corner, but not much. Generally I like the renovation, but that is one aspect I do not. To me the Populous proposal was definitely better, but they could certainly do worse.

I actually really like the whole design of the new stadium. The only thing I would have changed is the main entry. I would have brought that central part up a few more stories facing Montlake. Century Link has that effect. All in all though, its a brand new stadium for the most part and I couldn't ask for more.

The feature is designed as a compromise between wanting to maximize viewing angles and to present the image of distinct stands. Many people bemoan the continuous bowl as boring and/or overdone, and lately several new stadiums and rebuilds have done something like this as an attempt to create a new visual standard in response. Especially since many new American football stadiums are using special forms of premium seating to make the end zones more attractive, this can be used to help define those sections.

Who are the "many people" that are bored with the continuous bowl shape? The average fan that goes to a football game doesn't care about that. They care about seeing the entire field comfortably for the amount of money that they have to shell out to go to a game.

Now I'll reserve my final opinion on this particular renovation until I can see what the field looks like from those corners. Hopefully the fan will be able to see the entire field from there. But with the curve of the endzone seats, combined with the angle of the seating, like at Met Life, you end up with blind spots like this:

And there are some great plays that happen from time to time in the corners of the endzones. It amazes me that an architect, while modelling their design on a computer, doesn't examine every angle to make sure that you can see the entire field before finishing the design. With the cost of these places, these kind of flaws are inexcusable.
