Microsoft gearing up to launch Bing, Windows 7 phone The team at India Development Centre is contributing to the development of Windows 7 phone HYDERABAD: Microsoft is gearing up to formally launch its search engine Bing in the Indian market. The Information Technology giant has announced plans to introduce its much-hyped Windows 7 phone in the domestic market, but the date of the formal launch has not been finalised yet. Microsoft India (R&D) Managing Director Amit Chatterjee said Bing would be an altogether different experience of users. “It will not just be a search engine, but will be a decision making engine, promising different experience to users. It is sure to give a different digital experience to users,” he said. In his maiden interaction with reporters after taking over as the Managing Director of the Microsoft's largest development centre outside the U.S., Mr. Chatterjee allayed apprehensions from a section of the industry that the company could not position its product effectively in the Indian market. Microsoft was always quick, but “we do not want to rush with things” as several factors including the user experience should be considered by bringing out the product. Strategy The company was, therefore, factoring several issues before formally announcing the date of launch of the much-hyped Windows 7 phone although it was ready with a broad strategy to make forays into the market. “The date has not yet been finalised, but the product is sure to hit the market later this year,” he said. The response for the Windows 7 phone in the markets where it was launched was extremely positive. Nine of the ten users were reportedly recommending the product to others as the availability of applications was the key factor that differentiates the phone. Applications “There is an ecosystem for the applications which number about 7,000 in addition to a 20,000 strong developers' community,” he said. Explaining about the ongoing efforts to bring out new applications, he said almost 100 applications were being added to the App Store on a daily basis with users downloading at least one application everyday, reflecting the levels of acceptance of the product. The mobile applications team of the India Development Centre was contributing to the development of the Windows 7 phone. ![]() A couple of devices capable of supporting the Windows 7 phone had already been launched and the company officials claim that the new product was not for the regular mass markets. Head count Replying to queries, he said the IDC, with a head count of 1,600, so far participated in 270 patents and the effort had been to ensure that the products developed here offered a game changing experience to the customers.

Microsoft makes gaming easier Mr Amit Chatterjee, Managing Director of Microsoft India (R&D) Hyderabad, Feb. 10: When 11-year-old Anindu plays games on the computer or the TV using controller and no-controller gaming devices, his 45-year-old mother is puzzled how these children can quickly grasp those complex operations. Microsoft says people, regardless of their age and understanding of technology, can play by just gesturing with their hands, legs and head. Also, they can quickly select from a variety of entertainment options in television, Internet and video library. “Controllers have always puzzled some people. Now they can forget about that hassle. They can watch TV and video, play games and browse Internet as we converge technologies. We are offering entertainment options in the living rooms,” Mr Amit Chatterjee, Managing Director of Microsoft India (Research and Development) Private Ltd, said citing the example of Xbox Kinetic. “We have sold 80 lakh units of Xbox Kinetic globally in a few weeks after its launch. It is not just a gaming platform,” he said. With regard to Microsoft's Windows 7 phone, he said the product might be introduced in India in the next few months. He, however, has not answered on the specific plan for release and the price point. “The phone has been received well with 20,000 developers from across the globe working on applications. There are about 7,000 applications,” he said. Addressing a press conference here, Mr Chatterjee, who has taken over as the MD after Mr Srini Koppolu quit the post two months ago, said the IDC centre focussed on Office Mobile applications and Bing (the search platform). “We would like to position Bing as a decision engine and not just the search engine,” he said.

R&D arm continues to pay rich dividends to BHEL Hyderabad April 12: State-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd's (BHEL) corporate R&D efforts continue to bring home rich dividends for the company, both in the form of contribution to its turnover and development of new components that enhance operational efficiencies. Its corporate R&D division, headquartered in Hyderabad, with a chain of smaller facilities across the country, contributed about Rs 7,758 crore to the company's total turnover of Rs 43,451 crore last fiscal. Now, the division is in the process of rolling out new equipment for power plants, including nuclear, solar and wind power units, apart from getting full-fledged into developing components using nano technology that will help enhance operational efficiency of the Indian power sector. “Our corporate R&D expenditure last year was Rs 1,005 crore, up from Rs 900 crore in the previous fiscal. We filed a total of 303 Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) applications and came out with 62 developments last fiscal,” Dr H.S. Jain, Executive Director, said. The division is in the process of setting up two new Centres of Excellence, dealing with advanced transmission system and advanced energy material, in Hyderabad at a cost of Rs 20 crore this fiscal. It is stepping up its activities in the nano technology sector, with a specialised Centre for Nano Technology (CNT) coming up in Hyderabad at a cost of Rs 8.30 crore. “We will be working on new components using nano technology that provides better conductivity. The CNT will have facilities for nano fabrication and nano power synthesis, which will impart ‘future ready' status to BHEL in the areas of ultra supercritical and renewable power,” Dr Jain told press persons here. Solar power In the solar power sector, the division is developing a new Solar Thermal Sun Tracker, as an alternative to the currently used electro-magnetic devices. “The new component can ensure that solar panels see the sun throughout the day automatically. The system for 20 watt PV modules automatically tracks the sun from east to west in a single axis and again turns to east in the next morning. This will significantly increase efficiency of solar panels,” Dr Jain said. In the nuclear power sector, the division is developing nuclear steam generator (NSG) of 700 MWe rating that will improve operational efficiency and reduce the overall height of the steam generator. “Our efforts recently resulted in us getting orders from NPCIL for supply of eight 700 MWe NSGs,” according to Dr Jain.

Evaluation system for ‘long and subjective’ answers developed
Researchers at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, have developed an automated evaluation system that makes it possible for computers to assess “long and subjective-type” answers.
Till now, automated evaluation has been limited to assessing only objective-type answers. The technology, which uses the Natural Language Processing (NLP) method to understand if a sentence makes sense, is capable of assessing essay-type answers within a few seconds with up to 99 per cent accuracy. “This new technology is unique as it will assess long and subjective answers. It has been put to trial test and found to be successful. The marks or grades granted under automated evaluation is 95 to 99 per cent close to the marks or grades granted by human evaluation,” Vasudeva Verma, a member of the computer science faculty at IIIT Hyderabad who developed the technology with 20 researchers, told The Telegraph. Evaluating subjective-type questions through computers has always been a challenge. The reason is computers fail to read and comprehend texts, Verma said. With the new technology, however, computers will be able to read and understand typed texts. After understanding the texts, the computers will compare their “essence” with certain model answers and award marks accordingly. “Instead of just matching the answer by words, the technology will help computers get the essence of the essay-type answers. The computers will have certain model answers (programmed in). They will then award marks or grades on the basis of how the essence conveyed in the answers is close to the model answers,” Verma said. But a key part of evaluating content is syntax. While computers do have tools to correct spelling and grammar, they cannot differentiate between a sentence that makes sense and one that doesn’t. The NLP method takes care of this problem. “(Using this method), the computer can pinpoint wrong words and meaningless sentences. If a text has a sentence like ‘banana ate my room’, the computer will recognise the fault in the sentence,” Verma said. Verma said the technology had been tested on a trial basis at the Enhanced Education Centre of IIIT Hyderabad and been found “95 to 99 per cent” accurate. “The technology cannot give 100 per cent accuracy in evaluation. But there is a very high degree of correlation with human evaluation. Its agreement with human evaluation is 95 to 99 per cent,” he said. A big plus-point of the technology is that if it fails to comprehend a sentence, it will flash a question mark, seeking human intervention. Verma said the technology had been commercialised recently by Setu Software, an incubating company of IIIT Hyderabad, which has approached several universities and school boards to adopt the method. “This technology will save time, cost and effort. If you use multiple computers, the answer papers of lakhs of students can be assessed in a day and the results can be published in a short time,” Verma said. He said school boards spend between Rs 100 and Rs 500 to evaluate a subjective answer paper and this cost could be reduced by using the new technology. Universities offering distance learning can also use this method for timely publication of results, Verma added. Verma said the researchers took seven years to develop the technology, which will be made available in other Indian languages too. An HRD ministry official said the development was a “significant step forward” in India’s plans to launch a virtual university in the next two years. “For starting a virtual university, we need to develop a system under which we can hold examinations online, evaluate automatically and publish results quickly. This automated evaluation technology is a significant step forward in starting a virtual university,” the official said. The researchers at IIIT Hyderabad are now working on how the automated evaluation technology can be used to assess handwritten, essay-type answers. “It is possible to translate handwritten text to digital format. Now we are exploring whether handwritten answer papers can be translated to digital format and evaluated by this technology,” Verma said. |
