Wow, that building would really stand out in that area.

The city will never allow a 57-storey building in this area.

Makes me wonder why they go through the effort of trying to get a building there if they know it will get declined. Just seems like a waste of time...is there any method to their madness?

WOW! -again!
tactic: ask for 57 and 'settle' for 50 or 40... (?) However, i think this is a perfectly appropriate area for such a tall tower -stretching the skyline east toward the underdeveloped, underutilized, underexploited sleepy Distillery district. On what grounds should this proposal be denied or scaled down anyway? There are already 35-40 storey towers proposed/rising in the area (Clear/Pure Spirit, etc.).

It's only a few blocks away from the Distillery. This area is mostly loft and business spaces so it may have less resistance then you think. I for one would love to see our skyline expand to the east like it has on the west.

Agreed. If they can get the ball rolling in this area it would be very exciting to watch.

It could be like the Entertainment District.

It's definitely what the area needs, along with the removal of Staples. Right now it's really got nothing too fantastic surrounding it. St. Lawrence connecting more smoothly to the Distillery would be fantastic.

This building should be approved so long as the market dictates it. It could mean some delay or changes to the East Bay Front developement if this area goes tall thouigh.

The replacement of the big-box stores and car dealerships with urban buildings in this area will do miracles connecting the Distillery with the rest of downtown Toronto.

I think it is time for Alsop to leave behind his trademark War of the World legs and move on to something else.

This is actually the site for the First Parliament Buildings in Canada, I believe. There was a proposal for a cultural center on this site, and the city was bargaining for the site.
This is simply a blatant attempt by the property owner to get more money from the city. |

Yeah, do you guys not realize this is not a serious proposal? lol The owner of the car lot was asking for a crazy price from the city, knowing it's historical importance and the intention of the city. He had no plans to do anything with the site. Now, all of a sudden, when the city refuses to give in to his demands, he plans a 50+ tower, on a historic site? lol He knows there is no way any government would approve that, he's just trying to use it as a bargining tool. There is no way in hell that's going to happen. He doesn't even have financing for the tower. Eventually there will be some kind of compromise and the city will get the lot for a public square, library and some kind of small museum for the First Parliament of Upper Canada and the War Of 1821. I think the city should just expropriate the land. I'd love to see a great public square with a serious monument, along with some public use building. (Museum) It's a perfect location for a public gathering/tourist site. The St. Lawrence Library will also be moved to this site. The city already owns the west side of this lot. (where the car dealership was) The big bonus will be the redevelopment of Staples. It's ugly as hell and so wrong for that area. I'll bet it's days are numbered. Ain't no 57 floor tower going up on this historic site. Last edited by Mollywood; February 22nd, 2011 at 08:18 PM. |

A piece of land that housed our first parliament buildings, is not in itself of much historical importance. If the original building is completely gone, then it remains just a piece of land.
