I don't think any airline considers either the A380 or the 747-8I without considering both.

Someone abandoned 3 x 747s in Kuala Lumpur where they are cluttering the place up.

More evidence that the four-engine era is drawing to a close.

These are 3 ancient 747-200Fs. It's just that somebody was not willing to pay to send them to the scrapyard, which will probably cost more then they are worth in scrap metal.

It's also possible that they simply have no owners anymore. If the owners came from a country with no clear bankruptcy laws and they went bankrupt it's not unlikely that they were simply lost inside a poorly managed bankruptcy case.

Most likely, the three 747-200Fs at KUL are due for heavy maintenance or D-check, which needs to be done approximately every six years and costs more than $1M. When they are scrapped, they are scrapped for usable parts, not merely for metal.

The usable parts market for 747 classics is also getting smaller and smaller and therefor less profitable as less 747-200s and 747-300s flying every single year.

There was 'a plan' called the Evergreen Supertanker conversion for old 747-200s. Its has been resurrected slightly recently by a successor company to the defunct Evergreen but intended for old 747-400F frames now.

How long can Omega Air keep their KC-135s airworthy too one might ask. They could be the real buyer of last resort.

The yanks made 1 x kc747 and sold it to Iran.Pic

From a week ago:

Boeing's 747 finds new role as space booster plane

Dec 4, 2015, 12:23pm PST

Quote:
The Boeing 747’s creator, Joe Sutter, never thought he was creating an outer space plane.

But it turns out he was. Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson is planning to use a Boeing 747-400 to lift a booster rocket to altitude before launch, just as competitor Paul Allen is using six 747 engines to power his own Stratolaunch aircraft.

Virgin Galactic announced Friday that it plans to use a 747-400 passenger jet from the Virgin Atlantic fleet, a jet that was providentially already was named “Cosmic Girl.”

The company decided to use a commercial jet instead of its original plan, to use its own WhiteKnightTwo aircraft to lift a booster rocket. WhiteKnight, a much lighter plane, is to lift Virgin Galactic's Spaceship Two for space tourism trips.

Boeing’s 747 emerged as the best choice to lift booster rockets, partly due to its reliability and its history of lifting heavy cargoes, including transporting Space Shuttles to the Cape Canaveral launchpad.

“Selecting the 747 airframe provides a dedicated platform that gives us the capacity to substantially increase our payload to orbit without increasing our prices,” said George Whitesides, Virgin Galactic CEO, in a statement.

The article says that's the 747 named "Cosmic Girl", which is G-VWOW that was retired by Virgin Atlantic in October.
