It was fun to attend the Boeing Centennial Celebration. I uploaded some pictures to Flickr as well as Facebook. Took over 1700 pictures of the event. The Laser show was fantastic.

All 4 models of 747 represented in laser show on a 747-8i as 747-8i variants during #Boeing100 light show.

This was by far my favorite scene depicted on the 747-8i - The Rover on the moon surface with the moon shining above.

To account for current and anticipated weakness in the air cargo market, the company plans to continue producing 747-8 aircraft at a rate of 0.5 per month and no longer increase the production rate to 1.0 per month in 2019. An $814 million after-tax charge ($1.28 per share) on the 747 program reflects a lower estimated total of 747-8 Freighter aircraft to be produced in the program accounting quantity and lower estimated revenues on future aircraft sales.

Boeing has now also for the 1st time publicly stated:

"If we are unable to obtain sufficient orders and/or market, production and other risks cannot be mitigated, we could record additional losses that may be material, and it is reasonably possible that we could decide to end production of the 747."

https://leehamnews.com/2016/07/27/74...ay-end-boeing/

With a production rate of 0.5 planes per month they still have several years of production left. Mainly for the open 747-8F orders including the ones for AirBridgeCarge and for the AF1 replacements. But if there are no further orders they will simply keep the 747 alive just because of the history of this plane that revolutionized air travel.

I don't think that 747s will be still produced in 2021. They will close line in late 2020 at the latest.

The AirBridgeCargo order is for 15 yet to be completed 747-8F (of the 20 announced during the Farnborough air show 5 have been delivered and 2 others - LN1535, LN1536 - are near completion). The AF1 replacement order will most likely be for 2 747-8 (it's still unofficial, but is almost sure they will be build) and other customers maybe amount for another 12 orders.

If nobody cancels their orders Boeing has around 28 yet to be completed 747-8 or 4.6 years of production at the 0.5/month production rate.

A small problem is that AirBridgeCargo is to take delivery of its remaining 15 orders during the next 7 years, so I guess Boeing will have to build and store them way before that.

I would think that the 10% workforce reduction in Seattle this year, 8000 or so to go, will make it impossible to increase 747 production rates in future.
