The offer to swap 77Ws for 748s to PIA came back in the middle of 2015, before UN declared bankruptcy. It is possible that Boeing could see the writing on the wall with respect to UN, so perhaps they were part of that offer.

More recently, it was rumored that the 2 UN NTUs would be part of the Iran Air order, along with at least a couple more 748s, if that order clears the necessary political hurdles.

More so this.

Iran Air are taking them on for prestige reasons it seems, no such interest from even Saudia with it HUGE Pilgrim traffic from around the world, heck they didnt even take up the VIP 748BBJ ordered, and no A380 either, I guess they are more realistic.

No airline can justify buying aircraft just to use for a few weeks per year, no matter how intense the demand might be for those few weeks. Jacking up prices for brief periods of intense demand is a much better way to bring supply and demand into equilibrium.

It would still make more sense for them to have had a few 748 as well, by the way there is year round pilgrim traffic to Saudi for Umra.

Why would it make sense when they can operate 777s with almost the same capacity but with much lower costs?

Same can be said for Iran Air, no?

US have allowed Iran to buy the Boeing aircraft they had signed up for, export licences granted for the 15 each 779X and 773W, 40 739MAX, 4 748i and 6 737NG.

The 737NG are likely 800s.

If they can find the financing...

Notice how how they order 30 777s and only 4 747s? I'm willing to bet at least 1 of the 747s will be used for VIP transport instead of commercial service.

They are paying cash for them from what I read. No financing needed.

There is no way Iran Air has the cash to pay for the planes. And even if they did, it would be foolish not to finance them.

Oh, and there's also the issue of getting the money out of Iran, since Iran is banned from using US dollars or the US financial system.

Quote:
What's holding up Iran's big airplane deals

Iran will also find it difficult to arrange financing for the deals until the Treasury Department provides more clarity for banks on their dealings with Tehran.

U.S. restrictions on banking remain in place, including a ban on transactions in U.S. dollars, and banks are reluctant to finance any deals with Iran until they have a much clearer idea about what they can and cannot do.
Quote:
Why Iran Will Never Proceed With The Proposed Plane Purchases

Yet there are four basic reasons why that plan makes no commercial sense: financing, competition, inadequate demand, and the problems associated with accommodating such rapid growth. First, Iran Air will have grave difficulties financing those planes. The company reports that it makes a respectable profit of about $150 million per year, but its finances are nowhere near robust enough to cover the depreciation and interest on multibillion-dollar plane purchases.

Iran Faces Financial Hurdles for Airbus Orders

The Airbus deal is far larger, though, making it more difficult to work without big financial institutions.

Quote:
Boeing CEO: If we can't sell to Iran Air then nobody can

The second "ensures Iran will not receive loans from US financial institutions to purchase militarily-fungible aircraft by prohibiting OFAC from using funds to authorize the financing of such transactions."

Boeing received approval from the federal authorities Wednesday to export passenger jets to Iran , see : http://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/b...s-to-iran.html

According this related article the following aircraft are granted for export : http://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/n...ashington.html
15 x B777-300ER
15x B777-9X
4 x 747-8I
40 x B737 Max
6 x B737NG

Regarding the Airbus deal (with a lot of US-made components): only 17 aircraft are granted an export approval.
