It's actually not strange.

These 747s need some rework before they can be delivered as they won't go to the airline they were intended to go to. Boeing send these planes to a location where they have experience reworking the 747s and where they also have the capacity to do it.

BREAKING: $UPS orders 14 747-8 Cargo Planes, w/ options for another 14. Big boost for beleaguered 747 product line.

UPS Purchases 14 New 747-8F Jumbo Freighters

UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced it has ordered 14 new Boeing 747-8 cargo jets to meet increased demand for the company’s air shipping services. UPS’s long term strategy is to increase customers’ access to global markets and air shipments are a major growth opportunity for the company. The 747-8s will enable UPS to begin a cascade of aircraft route reassignments that will add significant air capacity to the company’s busiest lanes, thereby optimizing global air network capacity well beyond the impact of adding new cargo jets.

“UPS is making several strategic capital investments for increased global operating capacity,” said David Abney, UPS chairman and CEO. “These investments will help enable customers to expand their presence in new and existing markets while fueling our profitable growth and attainment of UPS’s long term business objectives.”

The 14 aircraft are to be delivered between 2017 and 2020. The value of the contract, which also contains options for 14 additional jets in the future, was not disclosed. The new jumbo freighters will be added to the company’s existing operating fleet of more than 500 aircraft.

In addition, the 747-8 offers training and operating efficiencies to UPS. Pilots of the company’s existing 747-400 fleet will enjoy a common equipment rating, allowing them to fly both aircraft types. Further, UPS will realize greater economies of scale in maintenance and ground handling by operating the -8 aircraft.

That's anywhere from 2 years 4 months to 4 years 8 months of production depending on whether the options are taken.

Nice to see that one of the target customers has finally ordered the 748F. Now all they need is to get Singapore, and the Chinese airlines aboard.

This one major life extension order for the 747 line, which it desperately needed. Hopefully some more certainty about the continuity of the 747 program will lead to even more orders.

This order could also be a lead in for more UPS orders at Boeing for the 777F or even the 767. They've got plenty of A300s and MD-11's that will need to replaced at some point in the not so distant future.

WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! GO UPS GO!!!!!!!, (We Are the Champions from Queen is playing) I am so happy yall i was worried about the Boeing 747 line was going to go bye bye but i am happy to hear this, this is awesome news, and 14 Boeing 747-8's along with an optional 14 wow amazing thats 28 B747-8F's amazing!!!!!!!

Boeing is one of the Aerospace companies i want to be a part in the near future along with NASA and such, and its great to see an American Airline is getting new Boeing 747-8 F's.

I am also happy we are getting the Boeing 747-8's for the President planes as well oh boy i cannot wait how awesome will be the new VC-25's.

I don't want the Queen to go away she is legendary and is still a gorgeous bird to fly in and to look at, i am sad that she is vanishing but even though she won't be for passengers in the North American market at least she still has a market for Asian, European, and also in the Freighters as well.

Great news for the Queen of the Skies. UPS look to be doing a great thing here, extending the lifespan of the 747.

I can see them ordering maybe 70-120 777F-200 to replace the A300 and MD-11Fs over so many years. Also i see them buying 100 787s to replace their 757/767s as well at a later date, maybe even be the 787F launch customer.

I think Boeing could easily deliver 20 747F-8 a year for the next decade as its a proven workhorse and would easily extend the lifespan of the 747s until they decide if its feasible to overhaul the 747 and somehow take it another 25 years with a 10 variant.

Time will tell.

This is my summary, as best I know it. If anyone knows better, please correct.

Building now or in the next few months:
3 747-8Is for Korean Air. This completes their order of 10.
1 747-8F for Air Bridge Cargo (ln 1535), which needs engines and paint.

Building in the next few months:
3 747-8Fs for Air Bridge Cargo. This is part of their messy order for 20.
1 unclear allocation (ln 1543). Currently, our 747classic's summary says it's unallocated. Who knows?
1 747-8I (ln 1544). Who knows? It could be the first -8I for the VC-25A replacement order, but that's not clear.

Beyond that:
  • Air Bridge Cargo has an order for 20 -8Fs. However, it's not all new-builds and includes leases. It's also being handled in parts, so you won't find an order for 20 on Boeing's website. Two were ordered/delivered in November of 2015, and another four were firmed up in March 2016. It looks like, from the original MOU in mid-2015, the following parts of the order of 20 have been delivered or put in the firing line:
  1. ln 1501 (active)
  2. ln 1502 (active)
  3. ln 1505 (active)
  4. ln 1520 (active w/ CargoLogicAir, a subsidiary)
  5. ln 1535 (undelivered, needs engines)
  6. ln 1536 (active)
  7. ln 1540 (unbuilt, in firing order)
  8. ln 1541 (unbuilt, in firing order)
  9. ln 1542 (unbuilt, in firing order)
  10. That leaves 11 of the 20 to be filled over the next 5-6 years, but some could be leases of existing airframes, so it's hard to say how many more new -8Fs come out for Volga-Dnepr.
  • Intrepid Aviation has an order for 2 -8Fs, just announced.
  • UPS now has an order for 14 -8Fs.
  • The USAF has an order for two (considering three) -8Is, but it's not a firm order on Boeing's order book yet.
  • Iran Air an order for 4 -8Is. That could be new-builds, or it could come from the existing Transaero order, and/or it could include the orphan Luthansa ln 1535. Who knows at this point? The order isn't on Boeing's books yet.
  • NCA still has 2 -8Fs left on its order, but there's speculation that they'll never take delivery of them.
Not gonna happen:
  • Arik Air has 2 -8Is on order. Probably will be converted to 777s or cancelled. Arik has some problems at the moment.
  • Transaero Airlines has 4 on order (two have been built, two have not). Transaero is bankrupt, and Rossiya hasn't said they'll take the order. Who knows?
So, how is the backlog?

For the -8F, if Volga-Dnepr new-builds every single plane left on its order, including those on the firing order, and UPS completes its order of 14, and NCA takes their two, then we have a backlog of 32 freighters, or 5.3 years of production at current rates.

For the -8I, if the USAF orders two, and Iran Air takes the Transaero order, including the two current white-tails, then we have a backlog of 4 Intercontinentals, or 0.7 years of production at current rates.

Up to 36 planes and six years of production at 0.5 planes per month; it's certainly an improvement for Boeing, and shows how nervous they must have been getting before the UPS order.
