L/N 1542 Update :

According the latest info the serial number and the internal still used Boeing customer code has been changed. The variable (block) number remains te same, see : https://tykesaeroblog.blogspot.nl/20...8f-update.html

Aircraft data : L/N1542 - 747-8(4A)F, RC 608, serial number 64265 UPS ( former 747-8(3Q)F, RC608, serial number 63784, AirBridgeCargo NTU), unpainted with white-brown rudders, N607UP, roll-out date June 20 2017, delivery October 2017.

Note : the new serial number - 64265 - is the 14th number in the reserved UPS serial number block 64252 until/incl. 64265. So the third aircraft to be delivered in 2017 is already included in the order of 14 aircraft (and not an extra aircraft)

Does anyone know which regular routes are normally served by Boeing 747-8i?

So sad...

The 747 is an iconic and legendary plane, more beautiful than A380

I believe it'll stick around for freight, but yea, sad we won't be seeing as many of them. They are truly beautiful planes.

On the bright side newer models of the 777 are in development and I think are equally as awesome.

I just noticed in this article about late A350 deliveries, Qatar CEO has said that they have recently purchased two 747-8 freighters. That is the first word I have seen of this, does anyone else have news of this?

It was moved back into paint hangar 45-04, which they use for rollout events.

Last week there was a cancelation for 3 747s, which can only be the 3 747-8Is for Transaero Airlines.

Personally, the last two 747-8I's built will be the long-awaited replacement for the well-maintained, but aging, VC-25A's. But 747-8F sales will continue, especially since Airbus has shelved the A380-800F project and Antonov has been slow in producing new An-124's.

Here's a summary of the current open orders and backlog (this is my supplement to the far more thorough reporting of our own 747classic).

Volga-Dnepr (20 frames, 747-8F, deliveries to Air Bridge Cargo, including leases through Intrepid Aviation):

  1. 1501 (delivered)
  2. 1502 (delivered)
  3. 1505 (delivered)
  4. 1520 (delivered)
  5. 1536 (delivered)
  6. 1540 (delivered)
  7. 1541, rolled-out and pending delivery
Notes:
  • This order is really an MOU, with pieces of it being converted to a formal order as time goes by.
  • It includes new frames, leases, and options. Thus, there is no guarantee that the entire order will ever be completed.
  • So far as I understand it, the leasing could even include existing frames like 1429 and 1432 (which Saudia no longer intends to operate). This may be in error.

UPS (14 frames, 747-8F):
  1. 1437 (delivered)
  2. 1542 (wrapped for delivery)
  3. 1543 is building
  4. 1544 is building
  5. 1545 in firing order
  6. 1546 in firing order
Notes:
  • This order is FIRM.
  • 14 frames are guaranteed, but UPS also has options for a further 14 frames.
  • Taking only the firm order under consideration, there are a further 8 frames in the order not currently (as of June) in the firing order.

Qatar Airways (2 frames, 747-8F):

Notes:
  • This is a new order from July. We'll have to wait for 747classic's update to know if these have been added to the firing order.

United States Air Force (0+2 frames, 747-8I):

Notes:
  • This order is anticipated, but does not yet count as firm on Boeing's balance sheet. These will presumably be new-built.

Unknown customer (1 frame, 747-8I):

Notes:
  • This order dates to March 2017.
  • Seems likely that this is a BBJ, not an airline purchase.
  • That means it's probably l/n 1495 (Woody said in June that it's apparently going to Qatar Amiri Flight).

And that's it. There are also currently 4 white-tails:
  1. 1435, a 747-8I meant for Lufthansa, first flew in 2011 and has been in and out of storage ever since.
  2. 1446, a 747-8I BBJ meant for Saudi Arabia, has been stored for five years.
  3. 1519, a 747-8I meant for Transaero, has been stored since 2015.
  4. 1523, a 747-8I meant for Transaero, has been stored since 2015.

Cancellations this year:
  • 2 -8I frames for Arik Air (cancelled January 2017). 0 built.
  • 2 -8F frames for Nippon Cargo Airlines (cancelled March 2017). 0 built.
  • 4 -8I frames for Transaero Airlines (1 cancelled March 2017, 3 cancelled July 2017). 2 built, NTU.

At the current completion rate of 6 frames/year:
  • L/Ns through 1544 will be delivered this year.
  • L/N 1545 through 1550 will be delivered in 2018.
  • L/N 1551 through 1556 will be delivered through December of 2019.
  • 1556 represents the last of the firm orders (the 14 frames for UPS, plus the 2 frames for Qatar Airways). If the USAF firms an order for 2 new jets (VC-25B, perhaps?), that adds 4 months of production in 2020.
  • After that, the continuance of the order book is dependent either on the Volga-Dnepr MOU or upon UPS exercising its options.
  • Otherwise, Boeing will have to either find new customers, or close the line in about 2.3 years.

Correction to your list LN1437 was not taken by UPS, they rejected it. It is currently not assigned to any customer as is LN1535.

Both 1437 & 1535 are listed as Unsold on Boeing books.
