Why Iran Air Turned Down Boeing’s Offer for Two 747-8

In Boeing’s talks with Iran Air after major powers signed the nuclear deal with Iran in 2015, the American planemaker offered to sell two available wide-body 747-8 jetliners to the flag carrier, but the airline refused to take them.

...

The first Boeing delivery is to be delivered to Iran in April 2018, as many customers are standing in line prior to Iran Air.

So why did Iran Air miss the chance to receive two available planes? The airline says they could not be delivered rapidly after all.

“They made an offer. We did assessments and held negotiations in this regard. The planes had problems that would have delayed the delivery by at least one and a half years,” Farhad Parvaresh, former CEO of Iran Air—also known as Homa—told Financial Tribune.

“So Homa could not accept them with such a delivery schedule,” he added, without elaborating on the planes’ “problems”.

...

But the B747-8 is not something Iran Air would want based on its fleet expansion plan,Saj Ahmad, chief analyst at the Dubai-based Strategic Aero Research, told Financial Tribune.

“Iran Air was never really interested in 747s. It’s always wanted 777s. Even though Boeing may have offered them, Iran Air was never obliged to take them as part of its planned multibillion dollar deal. My understanding is that Iran Air actually preferred the 777-300ER and 777-9, in the same way that Emirates does with a view to emulating their business model to capture growth through its Tehran hub. Quad-jets are done for, as we can see with the recent rate cut on the A380, which Iran Air also rejected.”

...

Not much, but still...

Today I first flew the 747-400 (HL7402) on a domestic flight of Korean Air between Jeju and Seoul Gimpo. The demand is huge with tonnes of airlines offering tonnes of seats everyday and the flight is still full.

The aircraft was quite old in terms of their interior but I was so amazed by how quiet the engines were. I mean it was like 787 quality while I'm still inside a nearly-twenty-year-old aircraft.

Turkish Airlines negotiates with Boeing for Super Jumbo Jets

Turkish Airlines (THY) is reported to have initiated talks with the U.S. aerospace company Boeing for the purchase of eight 747-8i, also known as the Super Jumbo Jet.

According to a report by Turkish daily Hürriyet, THY plans to bring Boeing's super jumbo jets to its fleet through financial leasing and employ them for long-haul flights.

If the $3 billion purchase is finalized, the national flagship carrier will reduce the number of flights to one to destinations where the airliner flies more than once per day. For routes with three flights a day, the company will fly twice with the 747-8i and another flight will be with the Boeing 777-300ER. Moreover, the purchase will also lead to the rebirth of the four-engine 747 Jumbo, whose manufacture has been decreased.

A special cabin design for THY will be introduced in the aircraft whose seat capacity can rise to 410 in three classes.

The price that the world's largest aerospace company Boeing offered to THY is reported to be so affordable that no other company has offered the airliner so far. The standard-equipped price of the aircraft is $386.8 million.

U.S.-based manufacturer Boeing started working on the new model of 747 Jumbo Jet in 2008, which the company had since 1969. The new model has a longer body, and the wing and motor technology was derived from Boeing's composite body 787.

After the cargo aircraft 747-8F made its first flight in February 2010, the passenger model 747-8i flew for the first time in March 2011. The letter "i" in the name of the model represents "intercontinental" flight.

U.S. presidential planes, known as Air Force One, are also 747-8i. Boeing has taken 133 aircraft offers in total, 45 passenger aircrafts and 88 for cargo flights.

Unlikely story.

I can't see Boeing still actually offering the 747-8I to airlines anymore. With the low production rate and lead times between orders and deliveries it will be only be delivered when the 777-9 will also already be available, which could also easily fit 410 seats.

In other words, I would be very surprised if this turns out to be true. Especially considering all the other stories about TK A380 and 747 orders that have come out over the last 10 years which all didn't result in any orders.

Searching for $1 Billion: Inside the Pentagon’s Struggle to Match Trump’s Air Force One Boast

By Marcus Weisgerber
September 8, 2017

Quote:
Two weeks after Donald Trump threatened to kill the plan to replace aging Air Force One jets, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg walked into Mar-a-Lago with some ideas for slashing its estimated $4.4 billion cost. In a Dec. 21 meeting with the president-elect, Muilenburg laid out four proposals. One of them would have cut about $1 billion, and Trump was soon boasting that he had saved that very amount.

But the Air Force — which oversees the jets’ acquisition and operation — rejected all of the proposals, saying that they would have produced a plane unsuited to the uniquely demanding requirements of flying the commander in chief in peace and war.

Since then, Air Force and White House officials have sought other ways to lower the cost of the aircraft, service spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said in an email. Added to some changes already in the works before Trump’s criticism, these are expected to save significant money.

It has yet to be seen whether those savings will equal the $1 billion touted by Trump; the final price tag won’t be known until next summer, Stefanek said. Air Force and industry sources have said they don’t know why Trump gave that figure.

Boeing just booked 2 Unidentified 747-8I orders on the last day of August.

This cannot be anything else other then the commercial sale of the 2 NTU Transaero Frames by the US Air Force.

Still just a rumor. I still don't believe it will turn into an actual order. The said AerCap involve makes it even less likely for me. They are pretty conservative when it come to orders, buying the 747-8I doesn't fit that image.

My source only told me it's still in a negotiation stage and we will have to wait and see. But wanted to say something as we are seeing the rumors of it all over the web. I too will believe it once announced, but sounds like a reality verses a rumor. We will see!
