The BA get their plane via a lease from Atlas Air, therefor it's Atlas Air that is listed in the Boeing order book and not BA.

Arik Air is a much bigger surprise, it's a small airline with a history of canceling orders. Like the order for 5 777-300ER they just this year. Maybe this is a compensation order for that cancellation, but it does make it uncertain if the 747-8I will actually ever fly for Arik Air.

This plane restores my hope in the future of airliners. A hope that was nearly destroyed with the advent of the flying whale that the A380 is.

I like the BA very much, but these were gone for a while.. I know the BA World Cargo B744 with the rose on the tail..

And I like the news that Arik Air is ordering the B748I, nice to see a new customer..

Nigeria’s Arik Air has ordered two Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental airliners, Boeing announced Thursday. The order makes Arik the first 747-8 customer in Africa and third worldwide for the passenger version, after Lufthansa and Korean air.
Um, what about Air China?

Sales of the 747 have been slowing down in the past few years and this is definitely an attempt to jumpstart it. Some airlines have opted to replace the 747 with the 777-300 models in cost cutting measures. It will be interesting to see how many more airlines will sign up for this revamped model.

That order is "pending approval by the Chinese government", therefor it's not considered a firm order yet.

Ah right. Is there any reason why it wouldn't be approved though?

Since it's politics a reason to not approve the order is always possible.

They would prefer a domestic model was ordered, e.g. the C919 (though its a fair bit smaller).

I don't think that it's on that level.

for example, It's said that Hong Kong Airlines order for the A380 won't be approved because of the controversial European Airline CO2 Emmision tax.

But for this 747-8i order it's not clear if it simply not up for approval yet, or that the Chinese government is actively delaying it.

In other news

Yesterday Cargolux took delivery of their 1st 747-8F after a month delay. Apparently they are still not completely happy with the compensation, but they did reach agrement that is good enough for Carcolux to not delay it any further.

First (ever?) commercial flight of the mighty 747-8F to Budapest in Cargolux's livery...

Dawn of a new era in aerial freight transportation...

Bye-bye...!

Wrong, Chinese government has never actively denying foreign purchases on the sole purpose of protecting domestic aircraft companies. Otherwise Chinese carriers will be all flying MA60/600s instead of ATR72s. Bring the C919 into a discussion about the 787i is pretty amusing at best, you are talking about a plane that is three times smaller, and at least five years away.

Cargolux used the plane commercially almost straight away. After the hand-over the 1st flight as a Cargolux plane was a short flight from the factory at Paine Field to Seattle. There it picked up cargo for the flight to it's homebase Luxembourg, that was already it's first commercial flight.

nice pictures btw

They "used the delay" quite well in this case.

@Qtya: beautiful pictures.
