The 1st 747-8I will be delivered today to "Qatar Amiri Flight", the VIP airline of the Qatari Royal Family. They will now send it to a completion center, Lufthansa Technik will make it a VIP plane in Hamburg.

Here's a video from it's 1st flight last month.

Nice to hear that!
Hamburg must be the only city in the world where billionaires have the opportunity to modify the biggest airliners into VVIP planes AND order the world´s biggest motor-yachts (like the 163m Eclipse).

Boeing Delivers First 747-8 Intercontinental VIP Airplane
 • First of nine 747-8 VIP airplanes will enter service after interior-completion program

VERETT, Wash., Feb. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) celebrated a major achievement in the effort to create a Queen of the Skies for the 21st Century, delivering the first 747-8 Intercontinental VIP airplane to an undisclosed customer. The airplane, which was delivered with a minimal interior, will enter service in 2014 after its VIP interior is installed.

"This is a great day for Boeing," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 747 is the most iconic airplane in the world, and I know customers are going to love what we've done to enhance its performance. The Intercontinental is fast, efficient and quiet, offering real savings and a great flying experience. And I believe it's one of the most beautiful airplanes in the sky."

The VIP version of the 747-8 Intercontinental provides a cabin with 4,786 square feet (444.6 square meters). This 747-8 VIP will include Greenpoint Technologies' Aeroloft, located above the main cabin between the upper deck and tail of the 747-8 VIP, giving the airplane 393 square feet (36.5 square meters) of additional cabin space. The Aeroloft will be installed by Boeing Global Transport & Executive Systems (GTES) in Wichita, Kan.

With Aeroloft, the VIP-configured 747-8 offers a total of 5,179 square feet (481.1 square meters) of cabin space, can carry 100 passengers and has a range of about 8,840 nautical miles (16,372 km). It provides double-digit improvements in fuel burn and emissions over the 747-400, and is 30 percent more quiet. With a normal cruise speed of Mach 0.86, it is the fastest large commercial jet.

The 747-8 VIP jet is the only large airplane in its class that fits today's airport infrastructure, giving its owners the flexibility to fly to more destinations. Building on the current 747's capability to fly into most airports worldwide, the 747-8 VIP uses the same pilot type ratings, services and most ground support equipment.

To date, undisclosed customers have ordered nine 747-8 VIP airplanes.

They didn't give a date when the service would start. The 1st delivery is still scheduled to be around 23 April, although it hasn't been officially confirmed by either Boeing or Lufthansa.

But out of those only the Arik Air order is currently listed in the Boeing order book.

The Air China order is still pending, waiting until government approval for this order.

Transaero only has a commitment for the 747-8 not an order, it's awaiting financing before it's firmed up.

And finally the Air Hong Kong order is even less clear, they have been rumored to be behind an "order" for an undisclosed customer for 15 787-8s that was announced by Boeing last year. But it's hasn't been firmed up yet, not even as an order for an Unidentified Customer. This could mean that it's like the Air China order still pending approval from the China government.

The delivery was initially scheduled at the beginning of this week, but it was postponed. Apparently some late rework had damaged part of the interior therefor Lufthansa of course wanted to have it fixed before the would take it. Since the original delivery date had not officially been announced yet the media didn't jump on it with stories that Lufthansa doesn't want the plane.

Now the delivery is scheduled for 1 May and it will arrive in Frankfurt on 2 May.

Actually, now I see the Boeing press message that it has been delivered, although it will still fly out in May.

Boeing Delivers First Lufthansa 747-8 Intercontinental

EVERETT, Wash., April 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) has delivered the first 747-8 Intercontinental passenger airliner to Deutsche Lufthansa AG, beginning a new era for the world's most recognized airplane, and beginning a new era of increased efficiency, stronger environmental performance and greater enjoyment for Lufthansa and its passengers.

"Lufthansa and Boeing have a long and proud history of working together to bring new innovations to the airline industry," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We are grateful for Lufthansa's inspiration and leadership in helping us design a new Queen of the Skies for the 21st Century, and I'm proud of what Boeing employees have accomplished by bringing this great airplane to Lufthansa and the world."

"After working together for many years, we are very pleased to have the newest generation of four-engine aircraft join our fleet," said Christoph Franz, chairman of the Executive Board and chief executive officer of Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

Lufthansa employees will conduct airline-specific preparations to get the airplane ready for a May 1 flight to its permanent home base in Frankfurt. Boeing will host a special flyaway celebration with senior executives from both companies that day. Lufthansa will then host a special celebration when the airplane arrives in Frankfurt on May 2. Details of those celebrations will be announced soon.

The 747-8 Intercontinental will bring double-digit improvements in fuel burn and emissions over its predecessor, the 747-400, while generating 30 percent less noise. The 747-8 Intercontinental's Dreamliner-inspired interior includes a new curved, upswept architecture giving passengers a greater feeling of space and comfort, while adding more room for personal belongings. It is powered by GE Aviation's GEnx-2B engines.

I was wondering whether if D-ABYA registration had been used on previous Lufthansa aircraft? If I didn't mistaken, Lufthansa's very first Boeing 747 (the 100 series) was also registered D-ABYA....
