It's still very quiet on that front. I expect the 1st delivery to be in late 2014 or early 2015, around the same time as the deliveries for Air China should start.

The first for Air China will be LN 1499 and should roll of the assembly line in March or April 2014. It should be delivered by mid-2014. There are no allocations for Korean Air yet.

There is a rumor that Garuda Indonesia might purchase Boeing 747-8i as well. It is yet to be confirmed, whether if they will really make the order.

They are looking at the 747-8I and the A380, mainly for the Hajj flights. But with a possible order for 3 to 5 planes they will probably also use it on other busy routes.

btw,

The Korean Air order is of course good for the 747-8I, but it would even be better if a new airline would order it. So a Garuda order would be even more welcome.

And this year hasn't even been too bad for the 747-8, it already had several new orders and commitments.

Cathay: 3 - 8F (Firm)
Air China: 2 - 8I (MoU)
Silk Way: 4 - 8F (MoU)
Korean Air: 5 - 8I (MoU)

Even with the cancellation of the DAE order it could turn out the best year in terms of net sales if everything is firmed up.

Air China ordering the B747-8I? Hmmm, it looks like it will need to retire either it's B744s or B74Ms to accommodate that order. And it's great to see CA ordering the next-generation B747 because it operates many high-density flights, especially within China... I wonder, though, what the seating configuration will be, and if it will finally introduce PTV and AVOD on board. I recall Air China still has shared TVs on board it's B747s, and it only has lie-flat seating in its Business Class, if not also First Class.

Garuda Indonesia Looking At The A380 And 747

Quote:
Garuda Indonesia is considering the purchase of the A380 or 747-8i in partnership with its government to help ferry religious pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.

> Garuda want three to five VLA's for the Hajj Trips
> Garuda is evaluating both A380 and 747-8i
> A purchase may come "very soon"
> First delivery in 2015

Garuda Indonesia could get their 747-8I in two years because Boeing has opening in their delivery schedule.

I think I've read the news that Garuda is looking for airplane that is larger than Boeing 777-300ER. Most people thought it would be A380 (as Airbus have frequently made approach to Garuda to sell their A380).

But the pattern of Garuda passenger load is different than those of Singapore Airlines or Emirates, where the seat demand of a single flight could be so huge that it could only be served by A380, Garuda never have such large seat demand.
Thanks to Garuda's lower popularity on global scale when compared to those airlines.

So I believe the likely replacement of Garuda's Boeing 747-400 would be Boeing 747-8. And I believe, Garuda might purchase just 3 (the same number as the existing Boeing 747-400).

It's not just seat demand, it's the premium seat demand that is the difference. Garuda wants to expand in the first and business class market, they aren't adding the first class on the new 777-300ERs for nothing. But since this possible VLA order is in the 1st place for the Hajj flights the focus will be more on creating a high density.

And I'm sure that Garuda fill up a 600+ seat A380 for the Hajj flights and both Airbus and Boeing will offer them a very good deal financially. So this is not a done deal for the 747-8.

I see. So the chance of having A380 winning over B748 on Garuda's order is possible.

Agreed. I was studying a possible 747-8i configuration based on Garuda Indonesia's B777-300ER product (retaining the same First and all aisle access Executive), and I found that there was a negligible difference in seat count between the 77W and 748. If they keep a similar premium demand, then the A380 takes the cake.

I can assure you that Air China's not ordering the B747-8i to replace anything, considering that much of its order for aircraft, is for expansion. Besides, the B777-300ERs are already replacing B747-400s and Combis, gradually on flights to the US. PTV AVOD is already available on most A330-200, newest A330-300s and B777-300ER.

Oh.. I see. So if Garuda wants to increase the number of premium seats, they would choose A380?

I think Boeing 747-8 could win over A380 in Garuda's order if:
- it could fly the same distance as the likes of Boeing 777-200LR or A340-500
- and it could fly at faster speed then those two aircraft
