But the pattern of Garuda passenger load is different than those of Singapore Airlines or Emirates, where the seat demand of a single flight could be so huge that it could only be served by A380, Garuda never have such large seat demand.
Thanks to Garuda's lower popularity on global scale when compared to those airlines.

So I believe the likely replacement of Garuda's Boeing 747-400 would be Boeing 747-8. And I believe, Garuda might purchase just 3 (the same number as the existing Boeing 747-400).

I think Boeing 747-8 could win over A380 in Garuda's order if:
- it could fly the same distance as the likes of Boeing 777-200LR or A340-500
- and it could fly at faster speed then those two aircraft
I sense that the B747-8 would be a better choice over the A380 because it offers a similar seat layout to the B744 (the largest aircraft it has); plus it is much easier to maintain and can fly a similar distance to the A380, if not longer; and it's about aircraft familiarity in terms of operations and maintenance that the 747 can deliver. Those are on top of the fact that GA is slowly expanding its premium seating market that it does not need to jump very quickly to the A380; perhaps it can start small and operate it to high-yielding routes more often. And, with a 3-class layout, the seating capacity may hold more than enough for Hajj flights (unless we discuss all-Y seating on an A380)...

Oh ok. But, will the B747-8I be used too on its domestic (intra-China) flights, especially on its lucrative Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Guangzhou services? I understand that CA operates B744s and CZ with A380s on those routes, respectively, hence the question.

Not exactly. If they roughly maintain the same concentration of premium seating as per the B777-300ER fleet, then we'd roughly get a configuration of 8 First Class, 48 Executive Class and 298 Economy Class for a total of 346 on the B747-8i - an increase of just 32 seats only. Considering that the hard product of the B777-300ER is exactly the same as Emirates, Thai Airways and China Southern, the A380 offers Garuda from as little as 489 passengers (from Emirates' most premium configuration) to Thai Airways' 507 passengers.

However, if having premium seats on these aircraft is not necessary, i.e. using similar seats to the A330-200s (lie-flat seats but not necessarily having direct aisle access), then the 747-8i can offer Garuda about 450 passengers, a nice, comfortable gentle increase from the 314-seater B777-300ER.

So, it really depends on the forecast for premium demand is.

Beautiful aircraft. At first glance it looks like ordinari Boeing 747, unless it is longer. The engine too, looks different than the previous aircarft.

Silk Way Airlines has firmed up an order for 2 747-8Fs.

This brings the 2013 net orders to 0.

Boeing, Silk Way Airlines Announce Order for Two 747-8 Freighters

SEATTLE, July 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Silk Way Airlines, a cargo carrier based in Baku, Azerbaijan, today announced an order for two Boeing 747-8 Freighters valued at $704 million at current list prices.

"Silk Way Airlines' vision is to be a successful and profitable cargo operator by investing in its fleet and services and continuing to increase its regional and international footprint," said Zaur Akhundov, president, SW Holding, parent company of Silk Way Airlines. "The order for two Boeing 747-8 Freighters is a move in that direction."

Silk Way Airlines currently operates Boeing 747-400 Freighters and 767-300 Freighters. It is considered as one of the leading cargo airlines in Central Asia providing full-fledged services to Europe and the United Kingdom and the Middle East, as well as the Far East including Korea, China and Hong Kong. In addition, it also serves international destinations through a network of alliances.

"One of the goals of the Azerbaijani government is to continue building Baku's strategic positioning as a trade hub," said Jahangir Askerov, president, Azerbaijan Airlines, and architect of the country's present day civil aviation industry. "The addition of the new Boeing 747-8 Freighters will enable Silk Way Airlines to expand its operations and help the government achieve its objective."

"We are pleased that Silk Way Airlines has selected the 747-8 Freighters to serve some of the world's high growth markets," said Marty Bentrott, vice president for Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Middle East, Russia, and Central Asia. "The 747-8 Freighter is the most efficient large freighter in the air and carries with it the 747 family's legacy of leadership in the air-cargo sector."

The new 747-8 Freighter gives cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any large freighter airplane while providing enhanced environmental performance. It is optimized to provide greater revenue cargo-carrying capability than the 747-400, offering 16 percent more cargo volume while keeping its iconic nose door. With more than 150,000 hours in service, the 747-8 Freighters are achieving performance milestones with customers reporting 1 percent better fuel burn than expected. To date, Boeing has delivered 36 747-8 Freighters.

They signed a MoU earlier so it was not really a rumor.

Speaking of that, wasn't the original MoU for 4 aircraft? Does this mean that they are firming them in 2 batches?

I believe there are 7 8i MoUs out there from this year if I recall correctly. What ever happened to the Hong Kong or Transaero MoUs? Does anyone know?

Thanks!

I believe it was 4 indeed, perhaps 2 firm + 2 options.

Correct. The order book for 2013 so far looks like this:

> Air China: 2x 747-8i MoU
> Korean Air: 5x 747-8i MoU
> Silk Way: 2x 747-8F firm (instead of 4x MoU)
> Cathay Pacific: 3x 747-8F firm
