It was delivered in November last year and is currently in MCI for cabin installation.

I think this is the first time I saw Boeing 747-8i in livery other than prototype or Lufthansa.

With that new B747-8i by the Kuwaiti Government, it looks like it will lessen the chances of using a B744 from Kuwait Airways, given that the cabin of the B748 is much larger and can fly further than the B744... but I may be wrong. Yet, the design looks great indeed... I hope a replacement for the Boeing VC-25 (Air Force One) would be based on the B747-8i.

The Kuwait Airlines only 747-400 is currently being converted from a VIP airplane to a full Economy class plane, talk about a downgrade.

There's also this one, used by the former emir of Qatar.

But it makes me wonder when the other 6 of the 8 BBJs that have been delivered will be painted.

That means, so far most of Boeing 747-8i customers are not airlines. Is that right?

Yes that's correct.

There are currently 4 airlines that have placed orders for the 8I and there are 9 orders for BBJs by different customers.

When it comes to deliveries the total is now 8 for Lufthansa and 8 BBJs. Unless we see a sudden rise in orders for the 8I it looks like the total number of VIP customers will always stay bigger then the number of airline customers. Logically there will be more -8I flying for airlines in the end, since they obviously don't just order 1 plane like the BBJ customers do.

In order to keep their Boeing 747 sales alive, Boeing is making a buyback program, where airlines can trade their elderly airplane with Boeing in order to buy newer Boeing 747-8i/F with reduced price. Surprisingly, Boeing is also willing to take Airbus planes too!

In this article, there is a quote on why the sales of Boeing 747 is lagging behind Boeing 777:

Quote:
In some ways, the 747-8 is a victim of Boeing’s engineering success: The 777’s extended range version has a maximum distance of 7,725 nautical miles (14,305 kilometers), giving airlines the ability to use a twin-engine plane on routes once reachable only by four-engine jumbos. A 747-8 outfitted to carry passengers has a listed range of 8,000 nautical miles.

Buying back older planes as part of new deals is a pretty common business in the aviation world, Boeing and Airbus have done it plenty of times.

Range is not the only reason, the 777 can haul more cargo in its belly than the 747 can.

I see. I think that's the reason why Garuda postpone their 777-300ER flight to London.

Do they really retiring their whole fleet of Boeing 747? Considering that they're the last airline in the world to receive Boeing 747-400.

Fuel efficiency doesn't seem to be a big issue for Philippine Airlines since also they're adding 2nd hand A340-300s to the fleet. With their expansion plans to Europe I don't see them retiring their 747s too quickly. This 1st one had a more exiting history then the other 4, this was probably the reason why it left the fleet first.

Since they haven't placed an order for there long term replacement of their long-haul fleet it's still possible that they will order the 747-8. But they have also been linked to a possible 777X order, making the 747-8 less likely. We'll probably see another top up of the 777-300ER order first, either as a direct order or as a lease deal.

The recent add campaign battle between Airbus and Boeing ended up in court. Boeing won this time around.

Quote:
Airbus loses dispute over 747-8 advertisement

Airbus has failed to convince advertising monitors to castigate Boeing for publishing claims that its 747-8 achieves better fuel burn per seat than the A380.

Two specific Airbus complaints about the advertisement - which appeared in Flightglobal publication Flight International - have been dismissed by the UK's Advertising Standards Authority.

Boeing had claimed that the 747-8 was 8% more efficient than the A380 and had a 26% trip-cost advantage.

Airbus had objected to the efficiency claim on the grounds that Boeing was using a 467-seat configuration for the 747-8 against a 555-seat layout for the A380.

The European airframer argued that, to achieve the same comfort standard as the A380, the rival 747-8 would have to be fitted with only 405 seats - and that this would increase the per-seat fuel burn.

But the advertising authority points out that the Boeing claim referred simply to the basic fuel-burn figure, not the cabin comfort.
