You know, I've tried to keep my words to myself on this site because I tend to get a little carried away; however, those words be fightin' words. Of course the A380 is an amazing and ground breaking plane. But to call 747-8I an A380 wanna be? C'mon now. If Boeing wanted to make an A380 wanna be, that plane would not even be an A380 wanna be. That plane would make the A380 wanna be whatever that plane is. Having said that, Boeing knows what it has to offer. Boeing has a very reliable track record and has been around much longer than airbus. It doesn't need to create a head-turner like the A380 to promote it's image. The heads have already been turned. Boeing decided to improve upon an already established brand and has done it quite well. The new 747 is larger, quieter, more fuel efficient, and best of all you don't have to make any modifications to an airport in order to capacitate it. Thank you.

![]() Just because I've developed the statement of an user you'r pulling my eyes out?! Why don't you check the previous page to see who was the one who made the statement about this model as being a A380 wannabe. Regarding the commercial rivalry between the both aerospace giants and the range of models they are offering, I don't give a damn, the clients (airlines) will say who is the best model, if there is such thing as the best airplane, judging by the orders and profit made on both parties - the manufacturer on one hand and the client as operator on the other hand.

That's a way more elegant monster in the air than the A380 IMO

Of course it's more elegant, the A380 is a flying whale. I absolutely hate the cockpit of the A380 and the giant 'elephantiasis forehead' above it.
![]() ![]() vs ![]() Too bad the A380 didn't have the cockpit on the second level... |

so rather than a big forehead, you'd rather have a big jaw?

the a380 looks more balanced and symmetrical. the 747 looks like a caricature of a normal airplane with exaggerated features.

So they pimp-up the '60 model. Why didn't they design a new one.

The 747's design is a compromise between the needs of a cargo plane and a passenger plane. Which is why the cargo version of the new 747 has been selling much better than the passenger version. The a380 was designed to be a passenger plane first and foremost. Hence why it would make a lousy cargo plane . Airbus are also very keen on the concept of 'comonality' ie, it should be easy for pilots used to flying other airbus's to convert to a different one. This is the reason why the cockpit is where it is, in order to make it feel normal for pilots used to flying smaller planes. Likewise the 747 cockpit is only on the upper deck so that boeing could accomodate a nose loading cargo bay door, nothing to do with looking 'cool'. But the most important thing to remember is that planes are not designed to look 'nice' they are designed to fly well. Just look at the first images of the 787. It looked ridiculous to anyone who knows anything about how planes fly. The acutual 787 looks much more conventional. Since the a380 and the 747 both fly extremely well, both sets of designers got it right.

I agree with the majority of the posters, the A380 looks like a flying whale, it doesn't have the sleekness that the 747 series aircraft present. Its that "big forehead" that gives me a sour look every time I see it. Good thing the A350 will look sleek unlike its older brother the A380.

That's what Boeing loves to do (Thinking about the B-52...)
For all those "A380 is beautiful" posters, I can only say I hope future A380 models are going to look way better coz they now look as absurd as 747SPs. I agree that efficiency is the most important thing but given they both are quite efficient we can think about something else

Because Boeing is hedging most of it's bets on airlines moving to 787 size aircraft operating more frequencies out of more airports & Airbus is banking on the less frequencies to the larger airports with the A380. The 747-8i is just another option there if airlines want it. Why spend an absolute fortune on a clean sheet design if your focus is shifting to a slightly different strategy to in the past?
I really don't think 90% of the paying public care what the plane looks like to be honest. The interior will be the new sky interior so it's not as though they can whinge about that. In all honesty, the design of the 747 is timeless, most elegant looking airliner ever built, period. |
