Russell Hill has dusted its memory card and uploaded a nice picture of RC001 as it was in 2011, with the red/orange corporate livery:

I just had my 1st 747-8 sighting...... from my window. The Cargolux LX-VCB just flew almost over my house on approach to Amsterdam Airport.

I have seen them frequently at FRA airport. They are quite gracious to see.

They are indeed quite gracious, especially when you see them flying low and slow on approach to an airport. You instantly can see that it's a 747-8, the extra length compared to the 744 does make a visual difference. When you see it directly above you, just like I did right now it's the wings that set it apart.

But I have to say that it wasn't really that much quieter then the average plane. Oke, it's not as loud as a MD-11 (which woke me up yesterday), or the infamous classic 747 freighters that used to fly over here in my town up into the 1990s. The loudest plane that ever came over my house was a El-Al 747-200 or -300 freighter, which actually dropped an engine cover just a few minutes later into a local lake. This was after the Amsterdam Bijlmer crash, and not long before El Al stopped using Amsterdam as a stop-over on their cargo flight from the US.

Interesting snippet

With respect to the 8i, there was an interesting tidbit that came out of a post on Leeham the other day. Now, they have been bullish on the 747-8 in the past, but since the 777-9X became a reality, they have been very much down on the 747-8i. They did however mention the following in a recent post:

"United Airlines and British Airways said they are down-sizing their 747-400 fleets to the A350-1000, though Boeing is pressing British to buy the 747-8I in a critical campaign. Boeing has targeted Emirates Airlines for the 8I and it wants to sell more to Lufthansa. The former seems to prefer the forthcoming 777-9X, nominally a 406 passenger airplane in three classes, and Lufthansa’s wide-body decision seems more focused on the A350 and the 787 and/or 777X."

Has anyone heard anything more about any of this? I had heard that the original British Airways RFP between the 380 and 748 was very close, so I could potentially see that, however I have a hard time believing Emirates would be interested given the comments that have come out of there.

With the example of LH using them in a premium heavy configuration, which provides for a smaller increase in economy than you would otherwise have, maybe other airlines are examining that as a viable use case. Especially in conjunction with the efficiency gains coming in this year, and the projected ongoing improvements.

Thoughts?

It's the 1st time in a long time that we hear the 747-8I being targeted at Emirates. They did show a big interest at the start of the program, but they wanted Boeing to shrink the -8I compared to the -8F and give it more range. Boeing didn't comply and there was no deal at the end.

With Emirates being so interested in the 777-9X right now it doesn't look like Boeing will be successful this time around with the 747. Boeing will probably use the new improvements and the availability as the main points to win Emirates over. But since it would not be to difficult for Emirates to secure some earlier delivery slots for their outstanding orders for the A380 in about 2 to 3 years the availability might even work better for Airbus.

So I don't think they will order it, unless they get a very sweet deal from Boeing together with a huge 777X order.

Emirates studied the 747-8i but never bought it due to the lack of range. They are even pushing Boeing to increase the range of the 777X.

I wish if Boeing 747-8 could fly in the same distance as Boeing 777-200LR, it might be a good seller.

Maybe we should just change the thread title to Boeing 747?

That picture was taken when it was prepared for delivery to Lion Air in 2009. The engine was still in the process of being overhauled, they also hadn't painted the nacelle yet.

I read about that with regards to United's 747 fleet, but I think United downplayed that rumor that they are reducing their 747 fleet.
If I were Boeing, I'd focus with British Iarways, United and Delta for 747-8i sales. Also with Asian carriers.

I really hope Philippine Airlines will pish through with their original plan of purchasing 5 747-8s.

As stated in the article about BA and UA. They order the A350-1000 for their 747 replacements. Asian Carriers are a little more difficult to predict. Once KE gets theirs and shows it off maybe the Asian carriers will place a little more interest about the 747-8i. Delta is always a mystery. I think they will end up going for the 777x variants to replace older planes.
