boeing did ..... they built the 787 / 777x instead of going bigger. The 747-8i is mostly a cargo plane.

But Boeing was aiming for 2/3 till 3/4 of every B748 to be the passenger version. And they were aiming for much higher sales numbers. But they failed on that due to various reasons.

And bigger? The B748 is bigger than the B747. The B787 is much bigger than the B767. And the B777-X is bigger than the B77W, let alone the B772. So also Boeing is going bigger, no doubt about it.

If Boeing wanted to build a double decker plane ...they wouldve done it by now.

They have chosen to go with light weight fuel efficiency mid sized planes (787 / 787-9 / 10 / 777x) over the bigger, major capacity planes.

When Boeing bought McDonald Douglas, McDonald Douglass had the MD12 double decker plane design developed.

Boeing decided not to go thru with it because it was unviable. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_MD-12

I believe Boeing did actually developed full double decker airplane named New Large Airplane.

This is the image of the airplane:

More detail about the airplane:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_NLA

This is how the aircraft would have looked like, had it entered United Airlines in 1990s.

I watched a documentary in youtube about the 747. Joe Sutter and his team originally conceived a double decker design for the 747. Good thing they decided on the current design.

The livery used there reminds me of Canadian Airlines

There are reports that the first GECAS Silk Way frame is getting ready to be delivered.

It seems that both the GECAS frames were originally planned for delivery in March and April, but that some delay in financing perhaps has caused that to slip to April and May, or maybe just a bit later. However, there appears to be no question that they will take both the frames this year.

Also, it looks like their own frames that they ordered were originally scheduled for 2015 and 2016, however whether that has changed or not is unclear, since both of those frames should exit the FAL sometime over the next few months.

Funny that it rolled out on the Eight day of the month considering that the number eight is lucky in China.

Agreed. I've been waiting to see a 747-8i in the Air China livery for a long time now.

Does anyone know when the old 747-400s will leave the Air China fleet to be replaced by these planes?

I've read in Wikipedia that they are planning that by 2015, i think.
