I really do like the 747-8i vs A380. The A380 is just a fat floating elephant but thats just my opinion.

Iconic Boeing 747 Could Be Nearing It's End
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/1...n_4157063.html

Boeing has cut its production target twice in six months. Just 18 will be produced in each of the next two years. Some brand-new 747s go into storage as soon as they leave the plant. Counting cancellations, it hadn't sold a single 747 this year until Korean Air bought five on Thursday.

747-8I is not still enough to put on competition with the competitor !
Why would they invest a huge amount of money into a new 4 engined VLA venture? The A380 hasn't exactly been a runaway sales success.

What's with the photo of an old KLM 747?

Because they probably feel the market is saturated for the moment. The A380 was never meant to be sold in the thousands. Yet, its orders are twice the 747-8's.

Boeing was working together with Airbus on a double decker design before Boeing stepped out of the project and went along with the 787 instead. (maybe the new supersonic design came between the 2 developments).

And now with the 777X Boeing will have a new twin engined plane that has a similar capacity as the 747-400. Even if the 747-8I will be discontinued (or kept on a very low production rate together with the 747-8F) Boeing with the 777-9X still has a big aircraft that is for a large fishing in the same market as the A380. Boeing has already the largest part of the wide-body market covered, there's no need to spend a large sum of money into a new double decker program. Especially with the fact in mind that the A380 has not been really a money cow for Airbus until now.

The next new project for Boeing will be the replacement of the 737/757 with a project launch at the end of this decade and a entry into service around 2025.

The A380 still hasn't even broken even. It would be stupid of Boeing to build a similar aircraft.

Boeing also focused more on the 787 program and then expanded the 787 program by using 787 technology to build the 777x and i think the 747-8i.

I think Boeing is 5-10 years ahead of Airbus fyi.

Boeing is banking on the 787, 777x, and 747-8F ... they saw ahead of time that the 747 or bigger planes werent the answer. Making a more efficient plane over capacity gas guzzlers.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Boeing only break even with the 747 InterContinental with the -400 series? About twenty years after the first 747 rolled out to the runway?

A nice shot of LH's newest 747-8i to commemorate them taking delivery of their first frame 2 years ago!

Atlas Air just announced a new placement for 2 of the 3 former BA World Cargo 747-8Fs.

They will go to DHL Express where it will be used in the Polar Air Cargo Transpacific network.

The other one, which might be this one has been put into revenue service by Atlas Air.

Actually, the pic from MIA is one of the two earlier frames that were returned from GSS, which are actually the two later ones delivered to Atlas (1444/1445).

The third (1442) was just returned from GSS yesterday I believe, and it is currently in HKG. It will be re-registered as N856GT.

Boeing Delivers 75th 747 to Lufthansa

SEATTLE, May 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Lufthansa celebrated the delivery of the German airline's 75th 747 on Wednesday.

"Lufthansa is proud to share this milestone with Boeing," said Nico Buchholz, executive vice president, Lufthansa Group Fleet Management. "The 747 is an amazing airplane and will continue to delight our passengers for many years to come, and provide them with the ultimate in comfort and efficiency."

Lufthansa is the launch customer for the 747-8 Intercontinental jetliner and took delivery of the first one in April 2012. The airplane delivered Wednesday is Lufthansa's 13th 747-8 Intercontinental. The airline currently flies the 747 to 22 destinations in 10 countries. Over the years, Lufthansa has ordered a total of 81 747s.

Lufthansa's first 747 – a 747-100 – was delivered in 1970. The airline was also the first to order the 747-200 Freighter.

"Boeing and Lufthansa have a long and proud history of working together to bring new innovations to the airline industry," said John Wojick, senior vice president, Global Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We are pleased to continue that tradition with the 747-8 Intercontinental."

The 747-8 has accumulated 120 orders for passenger and cargo versions, 68 of which have been delivered.
