That retro livery on an ultra-modern aircraft really looks strikingly amazing... a blend of the old and the new, all in one! Makes me want to take pics of it whenever it comes to the US.

AirBridgeCargo Airlines placed their 1st direct order for a 747-8F last week, their 5 747-8s were ordered by their parent Volga-Dnepr UK Ltd.
http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm

They don't have to wait for the delivery of this order, they took delivery of this one straight away. They took over this specific delivery slot from Cathay Pacific who have deferred their last order until a later date.

Great catch. The sequence of events here is very interesting to me. I wonder what is driving it, or if there will be some clarity at some point going forward.

Do you know if this situation of delivery before the sneaking in of an order has happened before?

Also, Cathay's order was stated to be for 2016 back when they placed it. That was odd in the first place, but perhaps it has worked out well for Boeing that Cathay was looking that far out at the moment.

It is interesting though, the 1505 frame had a Cathay banner on it until the pretty late stages of the FAL, such that when it rolled out, I think it was still considered their frame.

The only recent example where there was a similar situation was when Iraqi Airways ordered and took delivery of their 777-200LR on the same day, this was originally destined for Air Austral that couldn't pay for it.

With the 747-8 the even after delivery still unidentified order for Saudia comes closest. They took 2 that weren't taken up by Atlas Air, but that was 4 months between the order and the delivery.

It could happen again soon with the LN1501 and 1502 if they go to Asiana as currently rumored.

I don't think GE GenX engines are sufficient to power the A380. They need something bigger, something halfway between GenX and GE90, and so far only GP7200 Alliance could fulfill that role.

Otherwise, Emirates has no choice but to purchase Boeing 747-8

The Boeing 747 plane as a whole has outsold a380 ......

and to be honest, the a380 looks like a fat whale that needs to lose a couple pounds.

This article has some really good shots from the celebration that Air China had in Beijing for the delivery of their first 747-8i.

The Air China Facebook page has a bunch of posts and pictures from the delivery and the first revenue service.

http://www.facebook.com/airchinaNA/p...760985/?type=1

Then, there are images like this from the first service out to Shanghai from Beijing.
