Here's a perfect image that will compare the B747 and A380... from Sydney (Australia):

A combined image of:

- United Airlines B747-400 (reg. N197UA)

When I took the photo of this CX Boeing 747-400, I had no idea that within a few months afterward the plane was sent to UK for withdrawal and possibly scrapping.

This is Cathay Pacific B-HOP

Some news on the 2 early 747-8s that were rejected by Lufthansa and Atlas respectively.

LN1435, 747-8I, the 2nd prototype that was not taken up by Lufthansa is now being completed with the engines being reinstalled etc. It's unclear what is happening with this bird, if Lufthansa will take it after all or if it might go to another customer (either new or one of the airlines that have orders.

LN1437, 747-8F, this one was rejected by Atlas and was not taken up by any other airline. Boeing used it as a test/promotional plane and had a Seattle Seahawks livery earlier this year. But now it's rumored that Saudia will take this one as their 3rd 747-8F.

Also more sources are now pointing to Asiana placing an order for several 747-8Fs. Taking up some of the recent White tails that Boeing built. The 2 available straight away were originally destined for Silk Way, they took the 2 that were supposed to be taken up by the lessor Gecas who cancelled their order recently.

All in all we can expect some order activity soon, but probably only for the ones that are already built and can be taken up almost straight away.

I heard from my friend who work in KLM that they are going to retire the Boeing 747-400 this year. I wonder if this true?

I think he meant KLM is going to begin retiring the Boeing 747-400 in 2015 -they have 22 of these planes in service right (not counting cargo).

It appears that the 1st 747s will leave KLMs fleet at the end of 2015 when the 1st 787-9s will join the fleet. The retirement will be slow process though, with just a couple leaving the fleet every year for the next couple of years.

The retirements will include both the combi and the full pax version, this also means that both version will keep on flying for KLM for years to come.

But with the dismal financial situation at Air France-KLM it's always possible that the retirement will go faster then currently planned.

That means anything is possible.

I remember back in early 2001 Continental Airlines used to operate a large number of DC-10. But in the aftermath of September 11 attack, many airlines went into financial difficulty, which led Continental Airlines to withdrew all of its DC-10 by early 2002.

Similar scenario could have happened to KLM's Boeing 747-400....

Hmmm... when will AF's B744s be finally retired from its fleet? I mean, that airline deserves a lot more fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft, given its route network... it should take its cue from its partner, KLM.
