Wait, do you mean there were just Birtish Airways reps on the tour? Or are they 747-8 customers that are allowed to take pictures of the FAL? The latter would obviously be some interesting news.

I wouldn't get too excited. The tour also looks over the 787 and 777 production areas.

I was on a VIP tour as a guest of British Airways to see their first 787-9. in order to get to the 787 line, we went past the 747, 767, and 777 lines inside the factory.

This wasn't a factory tour, as we were on the factory floor in VIP carts. They allow customers to take picture's of their airplane, just not the rest of the factory. I will be returning with them next month to see progress on their 787-9's and will take pictures then.

Boeing revealed that Atlas Air was behind the UFO for 1 747-8F which was placed earlier this year.

Heh, yeah, I was saying that more tongue in cheek than it really came across.

It's already undergoing final assembly, that slot was formerly Cathay Cargo #14 frame.

Luckily Boeing is able to switch around all the assembly slots for the 8F, otherwise their would have been much more white tails rolling out of the factory. Now it looks like there will be just 2 from the recent production + the older LN1435.

I don't know if I follow, regarding Boeing being lucky in this case. How would them not being able to switch 1526 around lead to a white tail?

The flip side of this is that there was speculation that 1520 was originally going to Atlas, and now it is clear she won't after all. So, in terms of frames without a customer, there are the 3 8Fs (1437, 1502, 1520) and the 1 8i (1435). Of those, technically only 1502 and 1520 are white tails, as 1435 and 1437 were NTUs. Hopefully they can find some homes!

They are lucky that they aren't all 747-8Is, that would be more difficult for them to shift to another customer.

And yes there are now only 3 white tails, but just a couple of months ago that number looked like it would be much higher with 4 747-8Fs assigned to Asiana and several still unallocated. Seeing how now a Cathay slot is transfered to AtlasAir, with Cathay taking up a later previously unallocated slot shows how Boeing can be flexible on a very short term notice with these slots.

Transaero's 1st 747-8i LN 1519 was moved from short term storage at the tower to the flight line. Later is was moved into the paint hanger.
