Another big one will soon come. From all the crap that mother nature sent us, another big earthquake in California will be inevitable.

THEN AND NOW
![]() The location of the old City Hall, left, is where the Main Library is now, at 100 Larkin Street. The Valencia Hotel, left, was destroyed in the earthquake. Looking down Valencia Street between 18th and 19th streets, right. 3600 Mission Street, left, when refugees were lined up along the sidewalk, and right, as it is today (small building on the right). The 100 block of Geary Street, the former location of the Whitney Building, is seen right after the earthquake (left) and as it looks today (right). Washington Square is filled with refugees after the earthquake (left) and a pleasant place to stroll today (right). Katherine Monaco holds son Dante on top of Telegraph Hill after the earthquake and fire (left). The same view from the hill is seen to the right. Looking south down Van Ness Avenue near Green in 1906 (left) and today (right). At left: Looking down O'Farrell towards Market Street in 1906, San Franciscans watch fires approaching the Call Building, once the tallest building in the West. To the right is the same view as it looks today; the Call Building is now called the Central Tower. The Flood building is the large central building still standing on Market at Powell Street after the earthquake (left). The Flood building today, right, at the center of the photo. The Embarcadero with part of the Ferry building around the time of the earthquake, left, and as it looks today, right. Soldiers marched down Market Street towards the Call Building as the city burned after the earthquake, left. Right, looking the same direction down Market Street today. |

What a difference.. it's amazing that it really did nothing but good to the city though, in the long run

That's amazing. I've never seen pictures of the old Ferry Building and that building at the intersection of Powell and Market. It's such a same that the pre-1906 City Hall was destroyed. It's so beautiful.

The current City Hall is great but it can't compare to how grand the pre-1906 one. Atleast a few of the buildings on Market Street survived the earthquake.
