Second tower, proposal #1 had an interesting base, not sure if I am a fan of the remaining part though. Overall the 4th proposal seemed the most interesting. Rounded edges and areas are more appealing to me than flat areas and sharp edges.

The site area is 38,000m2 with a total GFA of 465,000m2. Besides the main tower we will see a 250m tall hotel building, two 170m office towers and two 160m tall residential buildings with a four-level high-end retail podium and a four level basement will form the rest of the mixed-use development.

For the reason that the aviation board committee did not approve the aimed height of 500m, it will be investigated to wider the belly and reduce the floor to floor height to achieve the GFA and same curve to point scheme for the 400m version.

There was an investigation on many shapes of the building but I am pretty sure that they go with the circular one, which should represent the shape of a bamboo shoot.

Here's the letter published in Shenzhen Daily today about the issue:

http://szdaily.sznews.com/html/2012-...nt_2326462.htm

SZ skyscrapers

I RECALL reading a news article in Shenzhen Daily recently about

the ground-breaking ceremony for the brand-new China Resources

(CRC) headquarters in Shenzhen Bay, Nanshan District, which was to

be a 525-meter teardrop-shaped tower edifice symbolizing not only

the upcoming strength of Nanshan and all of Shenzhen, but also a

beacon for more Hong Kong-listed companies to follow its example

and relocate their headquarters to Shenzhen.

It saddened me to hear that, in late November, the local aviation

authority pushed for a massive reduction in the height limit to

buildings in Nanshan that would affect the construction of future

landmarks in Nanshan.

The only obvious reason I could think of is the flying paths of

some aircraft which, when coming from the east, make a turn above

Nanshan while heading for Shenzhen International Airport. That is

much more worth changing than jeopardizing the development of the

expensive reclaimed Shenzhen Bay area.

A beautiful skyline made up of a number of the world’s tallest

towers would be a great plus for the city’s image.

The proposed CRC tower would have been the anchor of the western

Shenzhen skyline, for all Hong Kong and international visitors

coming from the Shenzhen Bay Bridge to see the growing strength of

Shenzhen and China. I believe the Shenzhen government should

bravely push the central authorities, including the aviation

authority, to get the original project enabled as it should be.

Keep in mind, even if sometimes the balance sheets don’t show the

advantages immediately, tall landmark towers benefit everything

around them — look at KK100. Developers brave enough to go ahead

with such projects — like Kingkey who managed to convince Caiwuwei

and other areas to go along with redeveloping — should be

encouraged to go as tall as possible.

Nebojsa Novakovic via e-mail

---

I guess, if the aviation authorities are stubborn, one way is to offer them the upper 50+ m to the for regional air control beacon to guide the airplanes into the airport, and for that it needs to be substantially higher than the Nanshan hills nearby, maybe 550+ m...

sounds like this project may be on the edge of being largely height reduced, i really hope they can find alternative options instead of changing this beautiful building.

perhaps different flight paths? But safety first. We don't want to see planes flying into skyscrapers again..

That's what I wrote you guys already at the beginning of Dec last year. It is pretty calm around this project for the last two month.
