Plan for new airport takes wings

BHUBANESWAR: The city has moved a step closer to its dream of an international airport with the state government identifying over 2,000 acres of land, around 40 km south of the capital, on National Highway 5 for it. "We have identified over 2,000 acre near Jankia and Malipada villages. The survey work is on," Khurda collector Hrusikesh Tripathy said.

Sources said land of around 20 villages, including Gayabandha, Malipada, Dalaka, Pota and Godipada, a large tract of cashew plantation belonging to the Orissa State Cashew Development Corporation, are being considered for the proposed international airport.

Official sources said the area was considered for three main reasons. One, the government has a big patch of land available in the area. So the proposed airport would require minimum land acquisition and displacement. Secondly, the NH will provide good connectivity to the airport from the city. Thirdly, it will be a strategically located for Cuttack-Bhubaneswar urban complex as well as Puri and Berhampur.

The airport would be close to the proposed South City being developed by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority. BDA has taken up development of a modern integrated township over 1208.39 acre in the south-west corridor of the city. Land from seven villages would be used for the proposed satellite city, including the highest 579.56 acre from Jagasara village, Madanpur (204.42 acre), Kaimatia (73.21 acre), Paikarapur (317.98 acre), Kaimatiapatana (3.04 acre), Bidyadharpur (7.01 acre) and Jagasarapatna (23.17 acre).

"The airport plan is futuristic keeping in mind the city's need for 2030 and beyond. The location has to keep in mind the city's needs then. If the plan is not made now, availability of land would become a problem gradually," vice-chairman of BDA Deoranjan Kumar Singh said.

Officials said the airport plan is still at a nascent stage. A committee under the revenue divisional commissioner (central range) has tentatively identified the land. After it finalises actual details of the land, the government would send the same for a feasibility study to the Airports Authority of India. If AAI gives it a go-ahead, the government would go for land acquisition. After that the government and AAI would involve private parties to develop the airport, they said. "The current airport almost divides the city into two. It is high time to consider shifting it to a new location," said BDA planning member Prashant Patnaik.

Notably, AAI in July 2006, announced to build an integrated international airport complex in the city. It was supposed to upgrade the existing Biju Patnaik airport by investing Rs 250 crore. The development was to be completed by 2010. Though Biju Patnaik airport was not upgraded into an international airport, the runaways are being expanded and a new direct approach road from Capital Hospital square to the airport is being developed.

Manipal Group proposes Varsity, Hospital, Infosys, its second campus

BHUBANESWAR: The Manipal Group has proposed to set up a university near Bhubaneswar and a multispeciality hospital in the Capital city.

Member of the board of directors of Infosys and Manipal Group advisor TV Mohandas Pai on Tuesday met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to discuss the progress in the Info Valley project.

Official sources said land for the Info Valley project had been identified along the BhubaneswarKhurda road.

The State Government has started work for infrastructure development and road construction work for the project, already started, is likely to be completed by Julyend.

Infosys will start the first phase work in the next three months. Employment opportunities for 5,000 IT professionals will be created in the first phase which will further rise to 15,000 in the next 15 years.

In the first campus of Infosys, 4,000 professionals have got direct and indirect employment.

The Manipal Group has proposed to invest `500 crore in the university where students from Orissa will be given priority.

The Chief Minister promised that the State Government would consider both the proposals and take a decision.

Chief Secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik, senior officials from different departments and Ranjan Pai of Manipal Group were present.
