I think once the whole wrap is up it will look very impressive it's hard to see how it will look with just two test strips.

There are brackets at the top of the stadium to allow the installation of a further 6 pieces of fabric wrap, perhaps the trial includes filling these spaces. Then we might be able to see it's effect better.
Each piece is 2.4 metres wide, there are 900m to fill so they need 375 strips of wrap. That's £18,666 per piece of 20 by 2.4 m wrap to make a total cost of £7,000,000. That surely doesn't add up - I can see why they want private money to pay or it! All we really need is pretty colours during the day, and bright lights at night to keep the Olympic audience happy - it worked with the Water Cube in Beijing! Anyone else think the wrap looks like the old strip blinds they use in schools?

What?
my nan would happily sow those strips for a fraction of the price lol. Don't understand why each piece is so expensive?

Cost perhaps includes research, manufacture, fitting and lighting?

And a whole host of administration and delivery costs no-one thinks about when they add up these things?

And the fact that when businesses know it's for the Olympics, they double the cost and add a bit.

There is a reason for it actually. When firms enter the bidding process in anything in the olympics, be it for buildings such as the velodrome or the stadium wrap, it costs them all money just to bid. This can be ALOT as they have to spend quite a bit on marketing and getting the best quality design. And what is unique about this situation is that the govenment pays them back all the money they spent in bidding if they unsuccessful, PLUS a commission. Thus, any firm that bids for anything both stands to make a profit, whether they win or lose, AND they don't feel the need to skimp at all on the cost of their bids as they know that they will make any money they spend back, and some. This is one of the big reasons for excess costs in the olympics. No other time does a firm bid for a project and get reimbursed should they lose a bid, let alone get commission for just bidding. Knowing all this, it wouldn't supprise me if say one or two of the seven million pound cost of the stadium wrap was actually all spent on the bidding process. Hope that clears things up for you guys.

about the Wrap...... from bdonline
Smallhorn is also collaborating on the hotly contested and highly secretive “wrap”, the long vertical fins of PVC fabric that will be suspended behind the diagonal columns, white on the outside and coloured to match the spectrum within. Twisted 90 degrees along their length, they will signal the entrances and also mask the exposed undercroft, although there is a danger that they will detract from the current crisp clarity of the white steel picked out against the darker interior. Momentarily banished by budget cuts, the wrap has since been reinstated through private sponsorship by Locog, the agency responsible for dressing the park – and in fact the city itself – in the official “look of the games”, a cacophony of fluorescent shards. To her credit, Smallhorn has somehow tamed the brash brand identity into a surprisingly successful treatment. Read more: http://www.bdonline.co.uk/buildings/...#ixzz1IloFW8nW BDonline.co.uk
