Gambela (ጋምቤላ) | Gambela Region (ጋምቤላ) | City Gallery

Gambela is the capital of the Gambela region and has a population of 40,000. Though small, since its a regional capital I think it deserves a thread on SSC.

Gambellans strike m as sharp articulate people. I don't know where that came from, in a usually introverted wider society.

DZman, I think those structures are in Gambella but the flag on the top of the one building (presidents office) is fake and the plants seem to have been altered a little bit, but other than that...good find on your pics. They are pretty good.

Gambela is a very popular name in DR Congo ( Kinshasa and Lubumbashi ), There are Gambela Avenues, Streets and even Neighborhood and Ethiopia Market . Tributes to Congolese Soldiers that were fighting against axis powers during the colonial powers.

Oh wow, interesting! Both Assossa and Gambella are names of towns in Western Ethiopia. What are the chances?

Very interesting indeed. Did some googling and it seems like Belgian Congolese troops have fought in Ethiopia. I found the following on wikipedia:

"Belgian colonial troops in AfricaThree brigades of infantry were mobilized from the "Public Force" (Force Publique) in the Belgian Congo to fight with the Allies in Africa. In 1940 and 1941, the "Belgian Expeditionary Forces" fought in the British and Commonwealth campaign to defeat the Italian troops in East Africa (East African Campaign). In late May 1941, Belgian Major-General Auguste-Éduard Gilliaert cut off the retreat of Italian General Pietro Gazzera in Ethiopia and accepted the surrender of 7,000 of his troops. [1]
After the successful conclusion of these campaigns, the 1st Belgian Colonial Brigade was redesignated the Belgian Colonial Motor Brigade Group and served in a garrison and rear-area security role in Cairo, Egypt and in British Palestine during 1943 - 1944.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Be...oops_in_Africa

... and:

"Gambela became part of Italian East Africa in 1936, and the shipping service suspended when the steamer, and the British resident, left Gambela on 14 October. During their occupation, the Italians built a road from Gambela to Nekemte between 1936 and 1940. Gambela was taken from the Italians by the 2/6 King's African Rifles on 3 February 1941.[4]
Lij Tewodros, a son of Lij Iyasu, surfaced in the Gambela area in May 1941 proclaiming himself Emperor. His insurrection was put down by Belgian Congo troops before they left the area in February 1942."

Ethiopians also did fight in the 1960s in Congo under the UN.
