Jacka Resources targets oil in Somaliland, exploration to start in current quarter

Jacka Resources (ASX: JKA) holds oil and gas assets in Australia, Tunisia and Nigeria. It is also pursuing a Tanzanian play.

Jacka Resources (ASX: JKA) has acquired a highly prospective oil exploration block in Somaliland, East Africa, that is on trend with the prolific producing basins of Yemen that hold 9.8 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

The company will hold a 50% operating stake in the 22,000 square kilometre Habra Garhajis block , where a working petroleum system appears to be demonstrated by 9 independently verified oil seeps.

Geochemical analyses of these seeps indicate a light oil or condensate that is consistent with the oils produced in Yemen.

Jacka’s partner Petrosoma has an established in-country office and team that will provide immediate operational capability.

The joint venture has scheduled an aggressive work program starting with the acquisition of a comprehensive gravity and magnetics dataset in the second quarter of 2012.

Jacka will also be required to shoot at least 500 kilometres of 2D seismic.

Habra Garhajis is 1 of 3 Jurassic rift basins in the Horn of Africa that are continuations of the Jurassic rift basins of Yemen, and its geology is expected to be very similar.

The entire East African region is the subject of an increasingly strong and competitive industry focus with companies such as BG, Ophir, ENI, Africa Oil, Anadarko, Total, CNOOC and others taking positions.

Recent finds such as Anadarko’s giant 30 trillion cubic feet gas discovery in the Rovuma Offshore Area 1 in Mozambique, large gas discoveries by BG and Eni as well as an oil find by African specialist Tullow Oil have all served to fuel interest in the region. - Source

You hear alot about China's economic presence in Africa, but Australia is a big investor too:

At the moment, the biggest investors are Australian and Canadian. Africa Oil is listed in the TSX while Range Resources and Red Emperor are on the ASX.

Kenya has been a huge sacrifice for Somalia, the discovery in Turkana will surely mean more risk being taken in neighboring frontiers. Somalis overlook the Kenyan discovery but it may easily be the most influential economic turning point in modern Somalia.

Horn Petroleum Corporation: Drilling Operations Update on Shabeel Well in Puntland, Somalia

Quote:
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - April 11, 2012) - Horn Petroleum Corporation ("Horn Petroleum" or the "Company") (TSX VENTURE:HRN) is pleased to update the market on the drilling operations on the Shabeel well in Puntland, Somalia. Horn is the Operator and holds a 60% working interest in the Dharoor and Nugaal Valley Production Sharing Agreements ("PSA's") along with working interest partners Range Resources (20%) and Red Emperor (20%).

The Shabeel well is currently at a depth of 2703 meters and had just completed the setting of the 9 5/8" casing. The well drilled through primarily tight limestones and shales of Lower Tertiary to Upper Cretaceous age and encountered a 355 meter section of Upper Cretaceous sands and shales of the Tisje / Jesomma Formations at a depth of approximately 1660 meters. The sands in this interval exhibited both oil and gas shows and petrophysical analysis of downhole electrical logs indicates a potential pay zone of between 12 and 20 meters in the section. Attempts to sample formation fluids using a wireline formation tester were not successful and thus the zone will require cased hole testing to confirm whether they are oil bearing. At a depth of 2015 meters a thick section of tight limestones and shales was encountered extending to the present depth of 2703 meters which is believed to correspond to the Upper Cretaceous Gumburo Formation.

The forward plan on the well will be to drill ahead to the originally planned depth of 3800 meters to evaluate the primary and secondary reservoir targets in the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic intervals equivalent to the main productive section seen in the analogous fields in Yemen. A testing program including the zones of interest seen to date and any deeper potential pay zones identified will be agreed with partners at that time. Upon completion of this well, the Company plans to move the rig to the Shabeel North location on which construction is nearing completion.

Horn President and CEO David Grellman stated, "We are encouraged by the results to date and pleased that we have confirmed the presence of an active petroleum system in the Dharoor Valley. We look forward to drilling ahead into the primary objectives of the well and hope to confirm the shallow prospective zones by testing in the near future."

Lots of jargon in that article. Can't wait until the real results come out.

Horn sees petroleum system in Somalia wildcat
Quote:
HOUSTON, Apr. 13

By OGJ editors

Horn Petroleum Corp., Vancouver, BC, said its still-drilling Shabeel wildcat in Puntland, Somalia, has confirmed the presence of an active petroleum system in the Dharoor Valley.

Horn, operator, said the Shabeel well is at 2,703 m where 9-5/8-in. casing is set. It has been drilled through primarily tight limestones and shales of Lower Tertiary to Upper Cretaceous age and encountered a 355-m section of Upper Cretaceous sands and shales of the Tisje/Jesomma formations at 1,660 m.

The sands in the interval exhibited oil and gas shows, and petrophysical analysis of downhole electrical logs indicates a potential pay zone 12-20 m thick in the section, the company said. Attempts to sample formation fluids using a wireline formation tester were not successful, and thus the zone will require cased-hole testing to confirm whether it is oil bearing.

At a depth of 2,015 m a thick section of tight limestones and shales was encountered extending to the present depth of 2,703 m that is believed to correspond to the Upper Cretaceous Gumburo formation.

Horn and partners plan to drill ahead to the originally planned 3,800 m to evaluate the primary and secondary reservoir targets in the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic intervals equivalent to the main productive section seen in analogous fields in Yemen’s Masila and Shabwa basins.

A testing program including the zones of interest seen to date and any deeper potential pay zones identified will be agreed with partners at that time. Upon completion of this well, Horn will move the rig to the Shabeel North location which is nearly built.

Horn is operator with 60% interest in the Dharoor and Nugaal blocks in a Jurassic rift basin in Puntland, Somalia. Perth independents Range Resources Ltd. and Red Emperor Resources NL each have 20%. - Source

Range Resources and Red Emperor keep investors waiting on Puntland well

By Editor on 12 April 2012

SmallCapNewsRange Resources (LON:RRL) and Red Emperor Resources (LON:RMP) have offered up some mixed news from the ongoing drilling work on the Shabeel well in Puntland, Somalia, which is being carried out by their joint venture operator, Horn Petroleum Corp. While the well has shown signs of oil and gas, investors are being made to wait on the final results as drilling continues.

Shabeel well is currently at a depth of 2703 meters and has just completed the setting of the 9 5/8” casing. The well drilled through primarily tight limestones and shales of Lower Tertiary to Upper Cretaceous age and encountered a 355 meter section of Upper Cretaceous sands and shales of the Tisje / Jesomma Formations at a depth of approximately 1660 meters.
