I agree with you all around. The individual buildings in Atlanta are awesome, both in size and design. But I really don't like the way the tallest buildings are mostly along Peachtree in different sections. Seattle and Pittsburgh do more with less b/c of placement.

The skyline does follow Peachtree Street (Atlanta's most prominent address) but there is good density in downtown and it does venture several blocks in different directions away from Peachtree. If you look at downtown alone it's more of a traditional skyline, but Midtown is where it begins to really follow Peachtree up to Buckhead.

The angle of this photo is perpendicular to Peachtree Street, so you can see that the downtown skyline is not linear by any stretch of the imagination.

Let me put Atlanta this way:

In terms of architecture, Atlanta has some of the most unique and individual buildings on the planet. Its wide variety of skyscrapers is fantastic and among the top 5 in the U.S. The buildings are so beautiful, especially at night. I'd give its architecture a 9.5.

But it terms of skyline, Atlanta is not so sharp. It has huge gaps in its skyline and the buildings are far too spread apart. It isn't attractive. I give its actual skyline a 7.0.

Atlanta's buildings are extremely powerful, though. Despite BOA's spire and crown, it is massive in real life. I mean, it is so big. Just think if all of Atlanta's skyscrapers were clustered around BOA. The thought makes me want to demolish all the buildings and rebuild them extremely densely-packed. It would be undeniably in the top 5 in the U.S.

I don't view my stance on my state capital's skyline as biased. I would probably put it around 50th in the world. However, its buildings are phenomenal, and keep Atlanta from being the laughing stock of urban planning. If Downtown and Midtown ever combine, and we get rid of all the surface parking lots, then Atlanta would have a shot at being something really special. But right now, we'll look to the future with hope.
